Book Radar Detection of Lightning and Electric Fields

Download or read book Radar Detection of Lightning and Electric Fields written by James I. Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been increased interest in the use of radars to identify electrified clouds and to quantify electrification processes. This report surveys the use of radars to observe lightning and to observe the effects of electrical fields on the orientations of hydrometeors. Observations of lightning channels, conducted with increasing sophistication since the 1940's, have revealed the wavelength dependence of the reflectivity of lightning, the distribution of lightning echoes in storms, and the differential reflectivity of lightning. Observations of electrified clouds with polarization diversity radars during the 1970's and early 1980's revealed changes of orientations of ice crystals due to varying electric fields. These techniques can now be used in coordination with measurements of electrical fields and radio frequency emissions from lightning discharges to gain valuable new knowledge of the structure and evolution of electric fields in clouds. This report suggests several approaches to the continued investigations of electrical fields in clouds by radars. Atmospheric electricity. (EDC).

Book Development of Airborne Electric Field and Lightning Detection Instrumentation for Aviation Safety

Download or read book Development of Airborne Electric Field and Lightning Detection Instrumentation for Aviation Safety written by Ralph Markson and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of Phase I were to investigate the use of simple corona current instrumentation on aircraft to measure thunderstorm electric fields and to conduct a feasibility study of a single station aircraft lightning interferometer to detect the occurrence and position of lightning. Both of these techniques have the common purpose of providing warning to aircraft crews when they are approaching potentially hazardous clouds and thunderstorms. The electric field measurement has the advantage of detecting electrified clouds which may not be producing lightning flashes but are nevertheless dangerous because an aircraft can trigger lightning; however this is a relatively short range system (on the order of 10 to 20 miles). The interferometer, which responds to RF pulses from lightning, has the advantage of long range detection (more than 100 miles) and can map the the position of lightning flashes in a manner similar to the way radar maps areas of rain. Thus the systems complement each other.

Book Radar Observations of the Effects of Changing Electric Fields on the Orientations of Hydrometeors

Download or read book Radar Observations of the Effects of Changing Electric Fields on the Orientations of Hydrometeors written by James I. Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing orientations of hydrometeors due to rapidly changing electric fields in clouds have been observed for the first time at a radar wavelength of 11 cm (S-band) with the polarimetric Doppler radar operated in Sudbury, MA by the Geophysics Directorate of Phillips Laboratory. During 1991 the radar was operated in a half-matrix mode, transmitting a signal of right circular polarization and receiving signals of right and left circular polarization. Observations of electrified storms on nine days during the spring and summer of 1991 revealed several occurrences of lightning that coincided with significant changes of the circular depolarization ratio (CDR), the cross-correlation, or the phase of the cross-covariance of the two received signals. We observed changes up to 2 dB in CDR, 50% in cross-correlation, and 40° in phase. However, many occurrences of lightning observed by radar were not accompanied by detectable changes of hydrometeor orientations, and we did not observe the cyclical changes of the polarimetric quantities that have been observed elsewhere with radars of shorter wavelength. We present examples of our observations and discuss implications for future measurements with this radar.

Book Lightning Principles Instruments and Applications

Download or read book Lightning Principles Instruments and Applications written by Hans Dieter Betz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lightning represents a natural phenomenon of substantial interest. Due to its complex nature, research continues in many countries and reveals amazing results. Lightning is actively observed because of its relevance to Earth climate and air composition in addition to the classical aspects of related human fatalities and damage to forests, buildings, power lines, aircraft, structures and electronic devices. In this volume, the most important contemporary questions on lightning are addressed and analyzed under many experimental and theoretical aspects. Lightning detection techniques using ground-based and space-borne methods are described, along with network engineering and statistical analysis. Contributions detail research on atmospheric electricity, cloud physics, lightning physics, modeling of electrical storms and middle atmospheric events. Special phenomena such as triggered lightning and sprite observations are examined. Lightning-induced nitrogen oxides and their effects on atmospheric chemistry and climate are discussed. Each topic is presented by international experts in the field. Topics include: * air chemistry * convective storms * infrasound from lightning * lightning and climate change * lightning and precipitation * lightning and radiation * lightning and supercells * lightning and thunderstorms * lightning detection * lightning from space * lighting protection * lightning return strokes * observations and interpretations * spatial distribution and frequency * triggered lightning * weather extremes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we all know, weather radar came into existence during the Second World War when aircraft detection radars had their vision limited by echoes from rain bearing clouds. What was often considered to be of nuisance value by the air force personnel trying to locate enemy aircraft was seen as an opportunity by the weather men. Thus adversity in one field was converted into an opportunity in another. Since then weather radar has found myriad applications with the increased sophistication of technology and processing systems. It has now become an indispensable tool for the operational forecasters, cloud physicists and atmospheric scientists. The current generation radar is but a distant echo of the radars of the 1940s. As a result, its operation and maintenance have become very complex, like the technology it uses. Therefore, there is a definite requirement of focussing our special attention not only on the science of radar meteorology but also on its operational aspects. The present book, as pointed out by the author, attempts to fill this gap. The author has presented the subject with a balanced blend of science, technology and practice. The canvas is indeed very broad. Starting with the history of weather radar development the book goes on to discuss in a lucid style the physics of the atmosphere related to radar observation, radar technology, echo interpretation, different applications and finally attempts to look into the future to indicate potential new opportunities in this field.

Book Correlated Measurements of UHF Radar Signatures RF Radiation and Electric Field Changes from Lightning

Download or read book Correlated Measurements of UHF Radar Signatures RF Radiation and Electric Field Changes from Lightning written by D. M. Le Vine and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Storm Hazards - 82, simultaneous measurements were made of radar echoes, fast and slow field changes and RF radiation from lightning near the Wallops Flight Facility. RF radiation and radar echoes were also obtained during periods when the NASA F106 research aircraft was struck by lightning. These data are presently being used to better understand the electrical processes which occur during strikes to the aircraft. Preliminary conclusions based on data obtained in 1982 verify that the events recorded aboard the aircraft occurred during lightning but also indicate that they occur with surprising frequency very early in the flash.
