Book Radar Based Case Study of a Northeast Colorado Winter Storm

Download or read book Radar Based Case Study of a Northeast Colorado Winter Storm written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radar and conventional meteorological data collected during the 19-20 January 1991 winter storm over Northeast Colorado as part of WISP-91 (Winter Icing and Storm Project) were analyzed to describe observations of snow bands and possible band formation mechanisms. A review of the synoptic situation led to classification of this storm as an anticyclonic type of upslope storm. Single and dual-Doppler radar analyses showed well organized mesoscale snow bands oriented west-southwest to east-northeast, parallel to the 800-400 mb thermal wind, formed during upslope conditions several hours after passage of an arctic cold front over the research area. Embedded within the bands were precipitation cores that propagated along the band with the upper level winds and nearly stationary (band relative) trapped mountain waves. The evolution and structure of snowband kinematic properties were studied by analysis of horizontal and vertical velocity profiles and reflectivity distributions using PPI scans and Extended Velocity Azimuth Display (EVAD) techniques. Various mechanisms were examined for their potential role in formation and maintenance of snow bands. These mechanisms included: conditional instability, Conditional Symmetric Instability (CSI), ducted and internal gravity waves, jet streak circulations, seeder-feeder cloud structures, and terrain induced phenomena such as trapped mountain waves, low level barrier jets, and cold air damming.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Case Studies of Colorado Lows and the Impacts on Windter Weather Maintenance

Download or read book Case Studies of Colorado Lows and the Impacts on Windter Weather Maintenance written by Nathan Rick and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter storms of varying degrees plague the Plains each year, bringing with them ice, snow, wind, and cold temperatures which adversely affect public, commercial, and private transportation alike. The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) adopted a Maintenance Decision Support System (NDOT-MDSS) to aid in their winter weather maintenance practices. NDOT-MDSS ingests data from a variety of numerical weather models as well as real time surface and pavement observations to output both a weather forecast and winter road maintenance recommendation that can be taken into account by NDOT to finalize their maintenance decisions for a specific storm system or road segment. Two case studies of winter storm events, 24-25 November 2018 and 23-25 February 2019 that affected Lincoln, NE were analyzed. The case studies were chosen because they were both Colorado low systems that followed very similar synoptic scale trajectories yet produced very different results. An initial synoptic overview that preceded each system was conducted in order to understand the observed environment prior to snowfall onset for each case study. After the synoptic analysis, comparison of the NDOT-MDSS forecasts at 3, 6, 9, and 12 hours prior to snowfall intervals to the observed ASOS values at the Lincoln, NE airport (LNK) were conducted. Forecasted snowfall amount analysis of the NDOT-MDSS was analyzed against the Rapid Refresh model (RAP), 12 km North American mesoscale model (12 km NAM), 4 km North American mesoscale model (4 km NAM), the global forecast system (GFS), and a derived model average, as well as National Weather Service and Weather Prediction Center computed accumulation forecasts. Ultimately, these analyses aided in a better understanding of the meteorological forecasts produced by the NDOT-MDSS and resulted in more insight for NDOT on the benefits and limitations of the NDOT-MDSS system that they have embraced.

Book Radar Observations of Dendritic Growth Zones in Colorado Winter Storms

Download or read book Radar Observations of Dendritic Growth Zones in Colorado Winter Storms written by Robert Schrom and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-band polarimetric radar observations of winter storms in northeastern Colorado on 20-21 February, 9 March, and 9 April 2013 are examined. These observations were taken by the Colorado State University-University of Chicago-Illinois State Water Survey (CSU-CHILL) radar during the Front Range Orographic Storms (FROST) project. The polarization radar moments of reflectivity factor at horizontal polarization (ZH), differential reflectivity (ZDR), and specific differential phase (KDP) exhibit a range of signatures at different times near the -15° C temperature level favored for dendritic ice crystal growth. Generally, KDP is enhanced in dendritic ice crystal growth region with ZDR decreasing and ZH increasing towards the ground, suggestive of aggregation (or riming). The largest ZDR values (~3.5-5.5 dB) are found during periods of significant low-level upslope flow. Convective features observed when the upslope flow was weaker have the highest KDP (> 1.5 deg km-1) and ZH (> 20 dBz) values. Vertically-pointing observations of radial velocity (VR) taken by NCAR's X-band polarimetric radar (NCAR-XPOL) are analyzed along with the polarimetric observations from the CSU-CHILL radar. The magnitude of VR is found to decrease towards the ground near the -15 °C temperature level, indicating a decrease in the mean particle fall speed. ZH increases towards the ground in this region, indicating an increase in the mean particle size. These signatures are found to be consistent with the growth and subsequent aggregation of dendrites.Electromagnetic scattering calculations using the Generalized Multi-particle Mie (GMM) method are used to determine whether these radar signatures are consistent with dendrites. Particle size distributions (PSDs) are retrieved for a variety of cases using these scattering calculations and the corresponding radar observations. The PSDs are found to be reasonably consistent with previous observations of ice particle size distributions. Observations of enhanced KDP, decreasing ZDR, and increasing ZH towards the ground may therefore be useful in identifying regions of rapidly collecting dendrites and thus increased surface snowfall rates.

Book Doppler Radar Investigation of Tornadic and Lightning Producing Storms in Northeast Colorado

Download or read book Doppler Radar Investigation of Tornadic and Lightning Producing Storms in Northeast Colorado written by Richard Michael Lucci and published by . This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinematic, microphysical, and electrical characteristics of two multicell thunderstorms observed in northeast Colorado were investigated using single and dual Doppler radar and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning data. These particular thunderstorms were chosen because of their generation of weak short- lived tornadoes and CG lightning dominated by positive flashes. Storm data was collected using the multiparameter, CSU-CHILL, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mile High Doppler radars. Various radar analysis methods were employed in an effort to infer origins of rotation, tornado formation mechanisms, and the storm structure responsible for the observed lightning patterns. Single Doppler techniques included multiparameter measurements, calculations of azimuthal shear, histogram analyses, a study of constant altitude and vertical cross-section data, and an examination of the unedited reflectivity and radial velocity fields. Dual-Doppler data was used to synthesize the three dimensional wind field.
