Book Isotope and Related Techniques in Animal Production and Health

Download or read book Isotope and Related Techniques in Animal Production and Health written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium jointly organized by the IAEA and FAO, Vienna, 15-19 April 1991. The symposium reviewed advances in nutrition and reproduction of ruminant and other herbivorous animals, as well as in new approaches to disease diagnosis and control. Consideration was given to isotope and related techniques currently employed in research, but more importantly to the application of research findings in improving the productivity of livestock reared in tropical and subtropical developing countries, e.g. of ruminant animals whose diets mainly consist of poor quality roughages. Also addressed were advances in the development of highly sensitive radioimmunoassay methods for measuring the concentrations of reproductive and other hormones. In addition, emphasis was given to developments in the use of enzyme linked immunosorbent assays, not only for diagnosis of diseases of major relevance to developing countries, but also for their applicability in monitoring the effectiveness of large scale vaccination programmes and conducting epidemiological surveys.

Book The Voluntary Food Intake of Farm Animals

Download or read book The Voluntary Food Intake of Farm Animals written by J. M. Forbes and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voluntary Food Intake of Farm Animals offers a wide discussion on food intake among farm animals. The book presents various studies, facts, details, and theories that are relevant to the subject. The first chapter begins by explaining the basic definition and significance of voluntary food intake. This topic is followed by discussions on meal patterns, the main features of eating, and the similarities between species. The next chapter explores theories about the food intake control, which are divided into two types: single-factor theories and multiple-factor theories. In Chapter 3, the discussion is on the food's pathway, including elaborations on the various receptors. Chapter 4 considers the central nervous system's involvement in the voluntary food intake and the energy balance regulation. The next couple of chapters highlight the possible reasons that affect food intake; among them are pregnancy, fattening, physical growths, and the environment. In the book's remaining chapters, the discussion revolves around grass intake and the prediction and manipulation of voluntary food intake. The book serves as a valuable reference for undergraduates and postgraduates of biology and its related fields.

Book Grass for Dairy Cattle

Download or read book Grass for Dairy Cattle written by Jerome Henry Cherney and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the current interest in the environmental and economic sustainability of dairy farming, grass forage crops have emerged as a potential solution to some of the nutrient management problems now encountered on intensively managed dairy farms. The expansion and reintegration of grass-based systems into the mainstream of dairying systems will require a major paradigm shift involving economic, social and ecological, as well as biological factors. This book examines the role of grass in milk production in sustainable agricultural ecosystems. It provides a current summary of the role of grass in dairy cattle systems, including the breeding, management, storage, feeding and economics of grass for both lactating and dry dairy cows. Written by leading specialists from Australia, Europe, New Zealand, North and South America, this is an essential reference source for researchers, dairy industry professionals and advanced students of forage and dairy cattle nutrition.

Book Times Gone By

Download or read book Times Gone By written by Vicente Pérez Rosales and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These memoirs trace the wild and adventurous life of Pérez Rosales from his childhood up to the 1860s. During that approximately half-century he saw and did more than a dozen ordinary men. At age eleven in Argentina he witnessed the executions of Luis and Juan Jose Carrera. From there, his activities and adventures took him on several journeys on sailing vessels around Cape Horn; to Paris, where he witnessed the July revolution of 1830; to various commercial endeavors including a distillery, the practice of medicine, and cattle smuggling; into service as an advisor to an Argentine warlord; as a miner for precious metals in the north of Chile; as participant in the California Gold Rush in 1849; as director of the government's project for German immigration and settlement in the wild south of Chile; and also as Chilean consul and immigration agent in Hamburg. Around the world, Rosales lived through many of his era's watershed moments. His exciting memoirs offer a chance to relive the rush and chaos of these times--from a much safer vantage.
