Book excerpt: Black students enrolled at predominantly White colleges and universities have disproportionately high attrition rates. Although several studies have explored the issue of Black students' academic persistence in colleges and universities, there is little agreement as to (a) the factors that influence academic persistence or (b) the definition of academic persistence of Black college students. Moreover, the majority of these studies have ignored the possible significance of the students' status as a racial minority on their adjustment to college. Instead, the major focus of these studies has been the relative influence on academic persistence of cognitive or noncognitive factors other than race-related status. In the present study, Black students' racial identity attitudes (Preencounter, Encounter, Immersion-Emersion, and Internalization) were used to examine the extent to which they contributed to the prediction of academic persistence (defined as intent to drop-out, college grade point average and academic statuses) at a predominantly White university beyond what was predicted by the students' gender and tradititional precollegiate adademic or cognitive information (high school grade point averages and SAT scores). The current study addressed a question extant in existing literature: the extent to which traditional precollegiate cognitive factors and noncognitive factors (racial identity attitudes) predict academic persistence of Black students at a predominantly White university.

Book excerpt: A quantitative, correlational design was utilized in this study to examine the relationship between academic self-efficacy, racial identity, and the academic success of first-generation African American male college students at Predominantly White Institutions of higher education. The study comprised 89 first-generation African American male college students attending five public institutions of higher education in the northern geographical region of the United States. The data were collected using the Academic Self-efficacy Scale (ases), Black Racial Identity Attitude Scale (brias), and a demographic questionnaire. The study employed three hypotheses: (a) academic self-efficacy would independently predict gpa; (b) racial identity would independently predict gpa; and (c) academic self-efficacy and racial identity combined would predict gpa. Of the three hypotheses, racial identity was the only variable that did not significantly predict gpa. This research potentially can add to the existing body of retention literature on first-generation African American male college students, most particularly on predominantly White campuses. It might also prove useful for parents, educators, and community leaders wishing to develop strategies and techniques that will foster academic resiliency among this student population. The research hypotheses were as follows: (H1) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Pre-encounter stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H2) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Encounter and Internalization stage attitudes will be more likely to report the mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H3) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Immersion stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. The author used two theoretical models: the Theory Racial Identity Development, Cross (1971) and Chickering's (1969) Theory of Psychosocial Development. To operationalize both theories, the Racial Identity Attitudes Scale, Parham and Helms (1981) was used to measure racial identity attitudes and the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory was used to measure student development (Winston, Miller, and Prince, 1987). The sample consisted of 119 African-American college students who were members of the Black Student unions at three predominantly White public colleges. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine the relationship between personal background characteristics, the racial identity attitudes and student developmental tasks. Pre-encounter (anti-Black) and Immersion (pro-Black) stage attitudes were less likely to report the mastery of the tasks associated with mature interpersonal relationships. Students with Encounter (pro-Black) stage attitudes were more likely to report the mastery of the Establishing and Clarifying Purpose task and Salubrious Lifestyle. Personal background characteristics showed the strongest effects. For Mature Interpersonal Relationships tasks, the strongest effects were class level and gender. Females were more likely to report the mastery of the Mature Interpersonal Relationships task. Four effects were stronger when Salubrious Lifestyle was examined. These were gender (males were likely to report the mastery of the Salubrious Lifestyle task while in college), income level, the percentage of Blacks in one's high school at the time of graduation, and the predominant race of teachers at the time of graduation. The findings of this study have implications for student affairs professionals such as counselors and residence life staff.

Book excerpt: Research by the American Council on Education (Wilds, 2000) has shown that while graduation rates for African Americans have increased, they are still below that of Whites. This difference may be explained by race. It is probable that African American students are facing more experiences with racial discrimination or other factors that make their race, more salient especially on the campuses of Predominantly White Institutions. This program of research addressed the social and academic factors of African American college students and how these experiences promote or inhibit their persistence towards graduation and self-worth. Specifically, how the significance of race and trios, a cultural life view (Jones, 2003) contribute to determining whether or not the degree to which one's interpretation or reaction to racial discrimination undermines or preserves their success and satisfaction. Three studies examine the constructs of trios and racial identity as mechanisms to maintain or enhance success and satisfaction for African American college students. Overall, it was predicted that being sensitized to the possibility that one's race may contribute to unjust outcomes and experiences would cause African American college students to encounter decreases in their academic success and overall satisfaction when faced with perceptions of racial discrimination. However, trios and racial identity independently would minimize or prevent such damage from occurring. Study 1 sought to validate measurements of the Universal Context of Racism (ucr) and trios scales. Results from factor analyses indicate the ucr is assessed by a single factor (alpha = 0.82), while trios loaded on five factors; Time, Rhythm, Improvisation, Orality and Spirituality (alpha = 0.80). In Study 2, using a population of African American students from a historically Black university, findings indicate that individuals who are constantly sensitized by their racial status experience decreases in psychological well-being and perceive more racial discrimination. With Study 3, the longitudinal associations of trios and racial identity in a comparison population of African American students who attend a historically Black university (hbcu) and those who attend predominantly White institutions (pwi) established that trios and racial identity levels vary across schools with students at the hbcu showing a greater significance of race and TRIOSic lifestyles. For students attending the hbcu, racial identity buffers the negative effects of perceiving racial discrimination on self-esteem. On the other hand, students attending the pwi use both trios and racial identity to maintain their self-esteem by allowing trios to buffer the negative effects of racial awareness as it leads to increased perceptions of discrimination, then racial identity helps to maintain self-esteem after the perceptions of discriminatory acts. Race matters for students at both institutions evident by the result of racial identity predicting self-esteem longitudinally. Nevertheless, students at the PWIs must incorporate the significance of their race with the holistic view of being TRIOSic in order to truly be satisfied.
