Book Foreigners minorities and integration

Download or read book Foreigners minorities and integration written by Sarah Hackett and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the arrival and development of Muslim immigrant communities in Britain and Germany during the post-1945 period through the case studies of Newcastle upon Tyne and Bremen. It traces Newcastle’s South Asian Muslims and Bremen’s Turkish Muslims from their initial settlement through to the end of the twentieth century, and investigates their behaviour and performance in the areas of employment, housing and education. At a time at when Islam is sometimes seen as a barrier to integration and harmony in Europe, this study demonstrates that this need not be the case. In what is the first comparison of Muslim ethnic minorities in Britain and Germany at a local level, this book reveals that instances of integration have been frequent. It is essential reading for both academics and students with an interest in migration studies, modern Britain and Germany, and the place of Islam in contemporary Europe.

Book Racial Incidents in Council Housing

Download or read book Racial Incidents in Council Housing written by Anne-Marie Love and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a 1991 postal survey sent to local housing authorities in England are published in this report. Its aim was to discover the extent to which racial violence and harassment is seen as a problem locally and to assess the impact of two reports sent to authorities in 1989 (RAG Report and Brunel Guide). Considering that the number of local authorities reporting racial incidents rose steadily between 1987 and 1990, it is essential that perception of this serious problem, and response to it, is fully understood.

Book Property Before People

Download or read book Property Before People written by Anne Power and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987 and now re-issued with a new preface, this book examines attempts by successive individuals and governments to overcome slum conditions and homelessness, to reform landlord-tenant relations and to provide sound modern dwellings with full amenities for those who need them. Its focus is on how those responsible for public housing concentrated their energies on buildings rather than management, on property rather than people, in sharp distinction to the women who played such an innovative and humanizing role in the early days of housing reform. Efforts to resolve public housing problems are examined in a study of twenty housing estates, and of the initiatives that local authorities have taken to reverse the sometimes overwhelming decay.

This book provides specific guidance for architects, planners, and housing managers on designing to deter crime. While every estate and neighbourhood has different problems which require unique solutions, the process which leads to the solutions will be the same. The first three chapters review the various theories of crime prevention through design, and abstract from them a series of six key principles which can be applied to all housing projects. The remaining five chapters outline the practical application of these principles in the assessment, design and construction processes. The text of this book has been compiled and updated from two educational packages produced by the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies and the Safe Neighbourhoods Unit. These were Safe as Houses (1988) and Safer Neighbourhoods (1989). Videos produced as part of those educational packages are available for use with this book.

Book The Racialisation of British Policing

Download or read book The Racialisation of British Policing written by Simon Holdaway and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-03-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing extensively on his own and others' research, Simon Holdaway argues that to understand manifestations of race within and outside the police, we need to analyse processes of racialisation previously ignored by the untheoretical emphases of much of criminology. Importantly, he analyses how 'race' is manifested within the organisational and cultural contexts of British policing. Laced with quotations from research, contemporary policy documents and other sources, this is a graphic and compelling account of racialised relations within police work which will appeal to students on a very wide range of social science degrees, from sociology to police studies.
