Attempting to find their place, the four sneak out of the school and board a ship for Spain. The plan is to be missionaries. Their dream is shattered when they arrive in war-torn Belgium during the Great War.Dropped in the middle of a ravaged country, they find themselves at the DeVoss field hospital. Dr. Levi DeVoss runs his hospital strictly by his rules. He needs nurses, not missionaries. The risk is too great to send them back. The only way to protect them is to keep them secluded at his compound—and away from the male species.Adjusting to the new way of life thrust upon them, the girls begin to learn the best-laid plans are God's plan. Working with their initial plan, they turn their sorrow into joy and their ashes to beauty. The four girls become women of strength. Will they all make it home? Book Construction of Gender and Identity in Genesis

Download or read book Construction of Gender and Identity in Genesis written by Karalina Matskevich and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karalina Matskevich examines the structures that map out the construction of gendered and national identities in Genesis 2–3 and 12–36. Matskevich shows how the dominant 'Subject' – the androcentric ha'adam and the ethnocentric Israel – is perceived in relation to and over against the 'Other', represented respectively as female and foreign. Using the tools of narratology, semiotics and psychoanalysis, Matskevich highlights the contradiction inherent in the project of dominance, through which the Subject seeks to suppress the transforming power of difference it relies on for its signification. Thus, in Genesis 2-3 ha'adam can only emerge as a complex Subject in possession of knowledge with the help of woman, the transforming Other to whom the narrator (and Yahweh) attributes both the agency and the blame. Similarly, the narratives of Genesis 12–36 show a conflicted attitude to places of alterity: Egypt, the fertile and seductive space that threatens annihilation, and Haran, the 'mother's land', a complex metaphor for the feminine. The construction of identity in these narratives largely relies on the symbolic fecundity of the Other.

Book When a Lie Is Not a Sin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dennis S. Ross
  • Publisher : Turner Publishing Company

Download or read book When a Lie Is Not a Sin written by Dennis S. Ross and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difference between truth and falsehood is often clear and simple. But when life gets complicated, the Hebrew Bible can help. The Hebrew Bible is true and wants us to tell the truth, even as biblical characters behave in less than truthful ways. What's more, where some of the lies people tell in the Hebrew Bible stories are punished, others are ignored and still others are rewarded. The Hebrew Bible’s mixed-message of "Do as I say, not as they do" shows that lies―little and big, whether told to protect or advance oneself or when intended to preserve the peace―often occur under involved circumstances and demand careful consideration. By viewing an array of situations in light of the Hebrew Bible―from the routine but delicate to the once-in-a-lifetime dilemma―this book will make a difference in how you think and live. This candid look at religion and truthfulness is ideal for anyone interested in exploring the religious basis for personal decision making, conscience and morality, including Jews of all denominations personally or in Torah study groups, Christians and social justice activists.

Essays by ten eminent scholars cover the perspectives of literature, gender, memory, sources, theology, and the reception of Genesis in Judaism and Christianity. Each contribution addresses the history and rationale of the method, insightfully explores particular texts of Genesis, and deepens the interpretive gain of the method in question. Book Interlinear Hebrew Greek English Bible with Strong s Numbers Volume 1 of 3 Volumes

Download or read book Interlinear Hebrew Greek English Bible with Strong s Numbers Volume 1 of 3 Volumes written by and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only complete interlinear Bible available in English-and it's keyed to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance! Thousands of pastors, students, and laypeople have found The Interlinear Bible to be a time-saving tool for researching the subtle nuances and layers of meaning within the original biblical languages. Featuring the complete Hebrew and Greek texts with a direct English rendering below each word, it also includes The Literal Translation of the Bible in the outside column. But what truly sets this resource apart are the Strong's numbers printed directly above the Hebrew and Greek words. Strong's numbers enable even those with no prior knowledge of Greek or Hebrew to easily access a wealth of language reference works keyed to Strong's-Greek/Hebrew dictionaries, analytical lexicons, concordances, word studies, and more. The Hebrew is based on the Masoretic Text and the Greek is from the Textus Receptus. The sources of the texts are documented in the preface, and are essentially the same (with some minor variations) to the Hebrew and Greek texts used by the KJV translators. Only a small minority of Bible students ever achieve the ability to read the original biblical languages. This resource offers a non-threatening tool for those lacking language training to begin exploring the languages of Scripture. - Conveniently includes the entire Hebrew and Greek text of the Bible in one place - Offering a concise, literal translation of each Greek and Hebrew word, it's a great jumping off point for in-depth Bible study and text analysis. This Bible displays all the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words of the Bible in the Masoretic Hebrew Text and the Received Greek Text, with literal, accurate English meanings placed directly under each original word in interlinear form, with Strong's Concordance numbers over each original word, enabling the Bible student (whether knowing the original languages or not) to refer to all lexicons and concordances that have also been coded with Strong's numbers. 2,936 pages, bound in a bonded leather over boards hardback edition. This new edition has been much improved by a new typesetting of the New Testament (Volume IV), with larger print, the left marginal column containing a newly revised Literal Translation of the Bible (2000), and a right marginal column containing the Authorized/King James Version (1769). The three volume Old Testament is an exact reprint of the 1985 Hendrickson Publishers Edition. The Old Testament does not yet have the 1769 King James Version. The only complete Interlinear Bible is now fully keyed to Strong's Concordance numbers. The Strong's numbering above each Hebrew and Greek word - along with the Interlinear text and marginal literal English Translation and the 1769 Authorized King James Version - opens a treasure house of Bible study possibilities for those who wish to understand the Scripture better. It's use will allow the novice student to read the original text without losing valuable time to look up the meaning of the Hebrew & Greek words in the Hebrew & Greek lexicons. There is no substitute for a first hand knowledge of the original text. However since only a small minority of Bible students retain an easy reading comprehension of the original text, the Interlinear Bible is a welcome aid to Bible students, laymen, and pastors who wish to continue working with the original languages.
