Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most basic information on plant-mealybug interactions during the last decade has come from research on the cassava Manihot esculenta Crantz (Euphorbiaceae) system with two mealybug species, namely Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero and Phenacoccus herreni Cox and Williams (Sternorrhyncha: Pseudococcidae). Both these insects cause severe damage to cassava in Africa and South America, respectively. This book reviews these interactions (plant selection by the insects, nutritional requirements

Book Tropical Veterinary Diseases

Download or read book Tropical Veterinary Diseases written by James A. House and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next century has been characterized by The Economist magazine as a dangerous one, and while it is impossible to completely predict the implications of the myriad changes associated with the new world order on the emergence, transmission and control of tropical diseases, they cannot be ignored. Despite improved technology utilizing diagnostic tests and vaccines, the international movement of live animals and the complexity of food trading patterns is increasing the risk of emerging diseases for both animals and humans. Animal pathogens continue to establish new niches and undergo genetic mutation. This volume speaks to these problems in papers that address issues of world trade and disease control; epidemiology, parasitology and microbiology of emerging diseases; and technology, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, quarantine, and regulatory control and communication as tools of control and prevention.

Book Bacterial Control of Mosquitoes Black Flies

Download or read book Bacterial Control of Mosquitoes Black Flies written by Huguette de Barjac and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mosquitoes and black flies are a constant threat to health and comfort, yet the modern chemical pesticides used to control them have cre ated serious ecological problems. Populations of resistant mosquitoes and black flies have evolved, beneficial insects and natural predators have been destroyed, and environmental pollution has increased worldwide. Therefore, scientists have energetically sought new, environmentally safe technologies to combat mosquitoes and black flies and the diseases they carry. Among the most effective alternative means of controlling these pests are the highly spe cific microbial agents derived from Bacillus tburingiensis or Bacillus spbaericus. The microbial control of mosquitoes and black flies is a very important, rapidly developing area of science. Entomologists and microbiologists have already achieved spectacular successes using B. tburingiensis and B. spbaericus against these pests. Recent discoveries of new bacterial isolates specific to new hosts and recent genetic improvements in these isolates have created the potential for wide-scale use of these biological control agents. Efficient microbial control of mosquitoes and black flies can now be achieved, but a proper knowledge of factors relating to the safe and effective use of these biological control agents is necessary. The efficacy of B. tburingiensis and B. spbaericus is influenced by the inherent differential tol erance of the target mosquitoes or black flies, by the formulation technology and application of these agents, and by environmental factors, especially sun light and temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The year 2020 is a milestone for several important health and development goals, including for efforts to reduce the burden of malaria overall and eliminate the disease where possible. It is 20 years since the Abuja Declaration and the launch of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); and 5 years since the global agreement on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework and the launch of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global technical strategy for malaria 2016–2030 (GTS) and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria Action and investment to defeat malaria 2016–2030 (AIM). The WHO World malaria report 2020 presents both the estimates of disease burden for 2019 and a review of the updated official estimates of global progress in the fight against malaria in the first 2 decades of the 21st century (2000–2019)" -- introduction.
