Book Introduction to Highway Hydraulics

Download or read book Introduction to Highway Hydraulics written by Federal Highway Administration and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ntroduction to Highway Hydraulics provides an introduction to highway hydraulics. Hydrologic techniques presented concentrate on methods suitable to small areas, since many components of highway drainage (culverts, storm drains, ditches, etc) service primarily small areas. A brief review of fundamental hydraulic concepts is provided, including continuity, energy, momentum, hydrostatics, weir flow and orifice flow. The book then presents open channel flow principles and design applications, followed by a parallel discussion of closed conduit principles and design applications. Open channel applications include discussion of stable channel design and pavement drainage. Closed conduit applications include culvert and storm drain design. Examples are provided to help illustrate important concepts. An overview of energy dissipators is provided and the document concludes with a brief discussion of construction, maintenance and economic issues. As the title suggests, Introduction to Highway Hydraulics provides only an introduction to the design of highway drainage facilities and should be particularly useful for designers and engineers without extensive drainage training or experience.

Book Robert E Lee at Sewell Mountain

Download or read book Robert E Lee at Sewell Mountain written by Tim McKinney and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1961, Gen. Robert E. Lee arrives in the mountains of Western Virginia (now West Virginia) to take command of the Confederate forces. He finds not only logistical problems caused by the terrain, but feuding between his two generals John Floyd and Henry A. Wise. Lee will be required to bring his diplomatic skills to bear, along with his military skills. Assisting him is his trusted aide, Walter H. Taylor. With some never before published photos, Taylor comes to life as Lee's indispensable aide and friend. During this fall season in the mountains, Lee will grow the beard that becomes a trademark of the great man in wartime photos. He also finds his beloved horse, Traveler, raised in Greenbrier County and purchased for $200. Here is recounted the history of this great horse. Lee loved him at first sight. This is the first book devoted to this long forgotten campaign of Gen. Lee. Many personal accounts of the men on both sides bring this conflict in the mountains alive. -- Publisher.

Book Ice Harbor Lock and Dam Lake Sacajawea Washington Feature Design Memorandum Number 34 Spillway Deflectors

Download or read book Ice Harbor Lock and Dam Lake Sacajawea Washington Feature Design Memorandum Number 34 Spillway Deflectors written by and published by . This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River flows passed through the spillways of the dams located on the lower Columbia and lower Snake Rivers produce water that is supersaturated with dissolved gases. These high levels of dissolved gases are detrimental to aquatic life. In the 1970's, spillway deflectors were installed on the spillways of several U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' projects (Bonneville, McNary, Lower Monumental, Little Goose, and Lower Granite Dams) to reduce the high levels of total dissolved gas (TDG) produced. However, in 1976, it was decided to postpone the construction of deflectors at Ice Harbor Dam. Key fishery researchers of that time judged that spillway deflectors at Ice Harbor Dam would cause poor hydraulic conditions in the tailrace that would likely delay or block adult fish passage. Also, the severity and frequency of TDG supersaturation downstream of Ice Harbor Dam was expected to be reduced significantly in the near future because of several factors. These factors included: (1) the recent completion of all six powerhouse turbines at Ice Harbor Dam, which would significantly reduce the amount of spill discharge required during periods of high flow; (2) the recently completed Dworshak Dam, having 3 million acre feet of active flood control storage, which would also reduce the amount of spill required at Ice Harbor Dam due to high flows; and (3) the installation of spillway deflectors and the accelerated schedule for turbine installation at the three lower Snake River dams upstream of Ice Harbor Dam, which would reduce the frequency and level of TDG entering the forebay of Ice Harbor Dam in the near future. This reduction of TDG in the forebay was expected to reduce, to some extent, the level of TDG downstream of Ice Harbor Dam as well. Operation of Ice Harbor Dam has changedh-IS)GT*GD,G9>G-* (DES(
