Book Speak Listen and Learn

Download or read book Speak Listen and Learn written by Tony Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This indispensable resource, for teachers of pupils aged 7-13 years, consists of a series of graduated lesson plans aimed at improving children’s speaking and listening skills, their self-confidence and their motivation to learn, ultimately leading to better school performance. The scheme was developed and tested in schools during a four year period with over three thousand children and their teachers, and focuses on class and group activities that are enjoyable as well as instructive. All pupils are able to participate regardless of background, academic standing or facility in English, and the skills acquired are central to the National Curriculum for England and Wales Key Stages 2 and 3. Each lesson worksheet includes learning objectives, guidance on preparation and organisation, an activity guide, and follow-up suggestions, all presented in a clear and simple manner to lead the teacher step by step through the session. The materials are grouped into four levels of difficulty which combine to build a powerful range of abilities associated with persuasive and presentational speech, dialogue and debate, as well as developing the children’s command, use, and articulation of English. Each level consists of twelve starter lessons suitable for class-based group work, with sections preparing pupils for a variety of class competitions including public speaking, poetry reading and debating. The activities link naturally with other areas of the curriculum, and topics already being studied can easily be incorporated. In a parallel controlled research project highly significant gains in a nationally standardised test of non-verbal reasoning were made over a seven month period by children who followed the activities for one lesson a week compared to those who did not. These were well in excess of what would be expected for their increased age. Particularly high gains were made by children of lesser ability and those for whom English was an additional language. The improvements recorded were later confirmed by the schools’ own National Curriculum assessments of progress against targets, where on average the project children exceeded substantially the end of year forecasts made by their teachers.

Book Aural Oral Dramaturgies

Download or read book Aural Oral Dramaturgies written by Duška Radosavljević and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aural/Oral Dramaturgies: Theatre in the Digital Age focuses on the ‘aural turn’ in contemporary theatre-making, examining a number of seemingly disparate trends that foreground speech and sound -- ‘post-verbatim’ theatre, 'amplified storytelling' (works using microphones and headphones), and ‘gig theatre’ that incorporates live music performance. Its main argument is that the dramaturgical underpinnings of these works contribute to an understanding of theatre as an extra-literary activity, greater than the centrality of the script that traditionally dominated many historical discussions. This quality is usually expressed in terms of the corporeality in dance and physical theatre, but the aural/oral turn gives an alternative viewpoint on the interplay between text and performance. The book's case studies draw on the ways in which a range of theatre companies engage with the dramaturgy of speech and sound in their work. It is further accompanied by a specially curated collection of digital resources, including interviews, conversations, and presentations from artists and academics. This is a key text for scholars, students, and practitioners of contemporary performance, and anyone working with dramaturgies of orality and aurality in today’s performance environment.

Book Churchill and Roosevelt Volume 2

Download or read book Churchill and Roosevelt Volume 2 written by Warren F. Kimball and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume two of the complete wartime correspondence of the two great statesmen of the twentieth century This three-volume work is the first complete collection of the correspondence of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. These volumes bring together every written communication that passed between Churchill and Roosevelt during their years of wartime leadership, providing rare perspective on the politics and strategy of the Second World War as conducted by two of history’s most charismatic men. Few other world leaders have communicated so regularly and on such an informal and often personal level. The topics covered in their correspondence range from the fate of nations and the shape of the postwar world to the mixing of martinis, details of fishing trips, and the swapping of doggerel verse. A major scholarly contribution, Churchill and Roosevelt: The Complete Correspondence draws on exhaustive research in American and British archives and include telegrams, letters, memos, and scrawled notes as well as transcripts made of Churchill and Roosevelt’s telephone conversations and a number of message drafts and unsent cables that offer unique insights into the thinking of the two leaders. Warren Kimball provides invaluable commentaries throughout, giving the context of specific documents and providing a chronology of the period. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Download or read book The DSSSL Book written by Javier Farreres and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DSSSL (Document Style Semantics and Specification Language) is an ISO standard (ISO/IEC 10179: 1996) published in the year 1996. DSSSL is a standard of the SGML family (Standard Generalized Markup Language, ISO 8879:1986), whose aim is to establish a processing model for SGML documents. For a good understanding of the SGML standard, many books exist including Author's guide[BryanI988] and The SGML handbook[GoldfarbI990]. A DSSSL document is an SGML document, written with the same rules that guide any SGML document. The structure of a DSSSL document is explained in Chapter 2. DSSSL is based, in part, on scheme, a standard functional programming language. The DSSSL subset of scheme along with the procedures supported by DSSSL are explained in Chapter 3. The DSSSL standard starts with the supposition of a pre-existing SGML document, and offers a series of processes that can be performed on it: • Groves The first process that is performed on an SGML document in DSSSL is always the analysis of the document and the creation of a grove. The DSSSL standard shares many common characteristics with another standard of the SGML family, HyTime (ISO/IEC 10744). These standards were developed in parallel, and their developers designed a common data model, the grove, that would support the processing needs of each standard.
