Book Sheading of Middle Kirk Braddan Kirk Marown and Kirk Santan

Download or read book Sheading of Middle Kirk Braddan Kirk Marown and Kirk Santan written by George Broderick and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 5 comprises the three central and eastern parishes of Kirk Braddan, Kirk Marown, and Kirk Santan. The material appears in alphabetical form with discussion of any problems of interpretation and a listing of the elements making up the names. This volume yields name-forms and elements not found in Manx literature or dictionaries. As all but a handful of names predate the Scandinavian period (9th-13th centuries) and as documentary material from that time till the 16th century is largely absent, the testimony of place-names is important for the distribution of name elements reflecting the geography and showing patterns of settlement, whether Celtic, Scandinavian, etc, and for comparative place-name research in adjacent areas, particularly Ireland, south-western Scotland, and northern England.

Book Sheading of Rushen Kirk Malew with Castletown and Ballasalla Kirk Arbory and Kirk Christ Rushen with the Calf of Man

Download or read book Sheading of Rushen Kirk Malew with Castletown and Ballasalla Kirk Arbory and Kirk Christ Rushen with the Calf of Man written by George Broderick and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-07 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 6 comprises the three southerly parishes of Kirk Malew (including the town and former capital Castletown and the large village of Ballasalla), Kirk Arbory, and Kirk Christ Rushen (including the Calf of Man island). The material appears in alphabetical form with discussion of any problems of interpretation, and a listing of the various elements making up the names. This volume yields name-forms and elements not found in Manx literature or dictionaries. In addition, reinterpretation of some of the names now places them in the Early Christian period of Manx history (6th-7th centuries), thus adding them to the small list of names predating the Scandinavian period (9th-13th centuries). As documentary material from that time to the 16th century is largely absent, the testimony of placenames is important for the distribution of name elements reflecting the topography and patterns of settlement, and for the development of Manx Gaelic during that period. It also helps to contribute towards comparative placename study in adjacent areas, particularly Ireland, southwest Scotland and northwest England.

Book excerpt: GUNS Edited by Gerald Hausman This anthology with more than 20 contributors from a variety of authors has something to please for every fan. Editor and contributor Gerald Hausman introduces the anthology with a brief history of GUNS. Stories range in tone from The Momaday Gun by Pulitzer Prize-winning author N. Scott Momaday, to Choice of Weapons by New York Times bestselling author Jane Lindskold. There is a spiritual history of firearms as well as a historical one. The truth is, they have been with us for a very long time. Every family has a gun story, a firearm anecdote that bares the bones of the oldest argument there is—the one about the plain old cussedness of the human race. In this unusual and varied collection of tales written by masters of the word, we begin with America's legendary past—with the pirate Blackbeard and the gunslinger Billy the Kid, followed by Teddy Roosevelt and moving forward in time to Andy Warhol. Here are stories that will shock and bewilder. N. Scott Momaday Hilary Hemingway Jeff Lindsay Trent Zelazny Jane Lindskold Aram Saroyan Jan Wiener AND MORE Stories of bravery and murder, stories of love, betrayal and suicide. Sometimes it seems that the gun is doing the talking—not for itself—but for all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electa Quinney loved to learn. Growing up in the early 1800s in New York, she went to some of the best boarding schools. There she learned how to read, write, and solve tough math problems—she even learned how to do needlework. Electa decided early on that she wanted to become a teacher so she could pass her knowledge on to others. But life wasn’t simple. Electa was a Stockbridge Indian, and her tribe was being pressured by the government and white settlers to move out of the state. So in 1828, Electa and others in her tribe moved to Wisconsin. Almost as soon as she arrived, Electa got to work again, teaching in a log building that also served as the local church. In that small school in the woods, Electa became Wisconsin’s very first public school teacher, educating the children of Stockbridge-Munsee Band of the Mohican Indians as well as the sons and daughters of nearby white settlers and missionaries. Electa’s life provides a detailed window onto pioneer Wisconsin and discusses the challenges and issues faced by American Indians in the nineteenth century. Through it all, Electa’s love of learning stands out, and her legacy as Wisconsin’s first public school teacher makes her an inspiration to students of today.

Download or read book Richard Quinney written by Clemens Bartollas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the life course of Richard Quinney, one of the most cited authors in the social sciences and a key figure in the development of critical criminology in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It provides a look into his personal thoughts in becoming a 'radical' criminologist and situates it in his various experiences, questioning, and shifts in his journey through life. Richard has contributed to a profound paradigm shift in criminology, beginning with his book, The Social Reality of Crime (1970), but also to peacemaking criminology as well as peace studies. He has also written several books via an autoethnography approach and has presented a number of photograph presentations for which he has received awards. It traces his early development on the family farm in Wisconsin to his travels in higher academe. It gives a personal perspective in becoming not only a radical criminologist, an accomplished writer in auto-ethnography, visual sociology, and photography but also how his continuous questioning of the meaning of it all came to fruition with profound insights about what it is to be human. The book will be inspirational to not only seasoned veterans in criminology, but also to emerging scholars, to undergrads and grads, showing them the struggles that come in 'making it'.

Book Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications

Download or read book Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications written by Mao-Hong Yu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-01-08 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been ten years since I presented the paper entitled “A new model and theory on yield and failure of materials under the complex stress state” at the Sixth Conference on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials held at Kyoto, Japan in 1991. The proceedings edited by Jono and Inoue were published by Pergamon Press in 1991. At that conference Professor Murakami and I were invited to act as the chairperson and co-chairperson of a session, and I presented the paper at another session. Few days before the conference, I had given a seminar regarding the tw- shear strength theory and the unified strength theory at Nagoya Technological University. These were the first two presentations of the unified strength theory, although I had completed the research of the unified strength theory in 1990. The paper “Twin-shear strength theory and its generalization” was published in the English edition of Sciences in China, the top journal in China, in 1985. The th original generalized twin-shear strength theory was presented at the 16 International Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Congress held at Copenhagen in Denmark and MPA (MaterialPrüfungsAnstalt) at Stuttgart University, Germany in 1984. After this Congress I visited the MPA and School of Civil Engineering of Stuttgart University, and gave a seminar regarding the generalized twin-shear strength theory at MPA of Stuttgart University. Professor Otto Mohr (1835–1918) has had worked at the Stuttgart University. He was a very good professor, his lectures aroused great interest in his students.
