Book The Creation of the Cowboy Hero

Download or read book The Creation of the Cowboy Hero written by Jeremy Agnew and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As business interests have commercialized the American West and publishers and studios have created compelling imagery, the expectations of readers and moviegoers have influenced perceptions of the cowboy as a hero. This book describes the evolution of the cowboy hero as a mythic persona created by dime novels, television and Hollywood. Much of our concept of the cowboy comes to us from movies and the book's main focus is his changing image in cinema. The development of the hero image and the fictional West is traced from early novels and films to the present, along with shifting audience expectations and economic pressures.

Book Tombstone

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sean McLachlan
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2013-06-20
  • ISBN : 1780961936
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Tombstone written by Sean McLachlan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gunfight at the OK Corral on 26 October 1881 is one of the most enduring stories of the Old West. It led to a series of violent incidents that culminated in the Vendetta Ride, in which Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and several other gunslingers went after their rivals the Cowboys. Like most tales of the Wild West, the facts are buried under layers of myth, and the line between good guys and bad guys is blurry. Wyatt Earp, leader of the so-called “good guys”, was charged with stealing horses in the Indian Territory in 1870 and jumped bail. Becoming a buffalo hunter and gambler, he got into several scrapes and earned a reputation as a gunfighter. Several times he helped lawmen arrest outlaws, but usually his assistance came more because of a personal grudge against the criminal than any real respect for law and order. He even got fired from a police job in Wichita for beating up a political rival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Working Cowboy, Margot Liberty and Barry Head present the oral history of Ray Holmes, a Wyoming cowboy born in 1911. Holmes has spent his life on horseback, herding cattle and doing other work with livestock. Since the time he rode his first horse, Holmes wanted nothing more than to be a cowboy--though his father insisted he would never make a living at it. The determination that started him on his dream has stayed with him throughout his life. Holmes remains a quiet man, averse to bragging but is candid and strongly opinionated. Practical chapters, such as “Some Talk about Cowboys” and “Some Talk about Calves and Calving,” alternate with chapters describing Holmes’s colorful life, including his coping with the blizzard of 1959, listening to the very first radio in the neighborhood, and sleeping with potatoes to keep them from freezing.

Book Jelly Bryce

Download or read book Jelly Bryce written by Ron Owens and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largely unknown except in a few law enforcement circles, Jelly Bryce was in the forefront of the conflict during America's gangster era. Many of his life's adventures read like tales of fiction but they aren't. While others posed for the cameras and gave press interviews, this is one of the men who really did the job. As an Oklahoma State Game Ranger, Oklahoma City Police Detective and FBI Agent for over 30 years, Bryce was the man responsible for creating the FBI's first firearms training program, developing their concealed holster, their fast-draw techniques and personally trained hundreds of their agents. Hired by the FBI without any college, his training duties were incidental. He was involved in 19 shootings in the line of duty. In one, he confronted a gangster pointing a loaded gun at him and shot the man five times before he could pull the trigger.

Book Deadly Dozen

Download or read book Deadly Dozen written by Robert K. DeArment and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every Wild Bill Hickok or Billy the Kid, there was another western gunfighter just as deadly but not as well known. Robert K. DeArment has earned a reputation as the premier researcher of unknown gunfighters, and here he offers twelve more portraits of men who weren’t glorified in legend but were just as notorious in their day. Those who think they already know all about Old West gunfighters will be amazed at this new collection. Here are men like Porter Stockton, the Texas terror who bragged that he had killed eighteen men, and Jim Levy, who killed a man for disparaging his Irish blood, though he was also the only known Jewish gunfighter. These stories span eight decades, from the gold rushes of the 1850s to the 1920s. Telling of gunmen such as Jim Masterson, the brother of Bat Masterson, or the real Whispering Smith—the man behind the fictionalized persona—whose career spanned four decades, DeArment conscientiously separates fact from fiction to reconstruct lives all the more amazing for having remained unknown for so long. The product of iron-clad research, this newest Deadly Dozen delivers the goods for gunfighter buffs in search of something different. Together the Deadly Dozen volumes constitute a Who’s Who of western outlaws and prove that there’s more to the Wild West than Jesse James.
