Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geography of New State: Physical and Descriptive I know of no other region whose physiography is so inter esting as that embraced in New York and the New England States, and I have therefore dwelt much on its physical geography, past and present. Inasmuch as the state owes its commercial supremacy mainly to certain of these physio graphic features, I think it well to impress their importance upon the attention of the student. Book The Physical Geography of New York State

Download or read book The Physical Geography of New York State written by Ralph S. Tarr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Geography of New York State At the request of the American Geographical Society in 1896 a series of articles on the Physical Geography of New York State was undertaken and the first number appeared in the Bulletin of the American Geographical Society, Vol. XXVIII, 1896, page 99. When these articles were begun it was my intention to cover the subject in two or three numbers; but after getting well into the task it became evident that to cover the field with any fulness would require many more chapters than were originally planned and, therefore, the series lengthened out to twelve numbers and was not finished until 1900. Since the preparation of the manuscript called for the careful consideration of the work of various investigators, there necessarily developed in connection with the work a rather full bibliography of the physical geography of New York; and, since the work of these investigators was made use of to such a marked extent, references were made to the numerous articles. The series therefore contained a rather full bibliography. As there is at present no complete account of the physiographic features of New York State, and no published bibliography of the literature on this subject, it has seemed to me well to group these articles together in a single publication, especially since the Bulletin of the, American Geographical Society is inaccessible to most geography teachers. I have been led to believe that there is some call for such a treatment on the part of the more progressive geography teachers in the State, and it is for this class of readers, and for similar teachers in other sections of the country, that the book is primarily intended. While naturally the greater part of the material in the book is based upon the work of others, I have in many instances drawn upon my own observations in various parts of the State.
