Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last century, nuclear power has been established as a reliable source of energy in the major industrialised countries. It has recently enjoyed a revival in attention and research due to the environmental concerns surrounding current conventional energy sources. Issues of regulation and safety are at the forefront of all discussions involving nuclear power, and will govern its place in the future. The Future of Nuclear Power takes a technical and comprehensive look at the current and future status of nuclear power throughout the world. The 17 chapters are divided into two main sections: a review of all current generation plants, and concepts for new advanced reactor design and safety. The broad-ranging topics covered by this publication, coupled with the current revival of interest in nuclear energy, make it a timely reference for all nuclear scientists. Reviews the issues surrounding the future operation of existing commercial nuclear plants Several chapters dedicated to the extensive research programs in place concerning safe and reliable operation Compares nuclear and non-nuclear options for energy needs in the future; evaluating the benefits and risks of both

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear power currently accounts for approximately 19% the United States' electricity generation and 60% of our emission-free electricity. Nuclear energy is a reliable, resilient, and has safely powered America for decades. But, fundamental questions about the future of this technology need to be answered. When will we see the commercialization of small modular reactors that can be deployed at off-grid locations? When will we see deployment of advanced reactors that can reach much higher levels of thermal efficiency, recycle nuclear waste, and serve as hybrid energy systems? What are the regulatory and market barriers slowing down progress of these technologies in the United States? Nuclear energy was born in the United States. We have the best scientists and engineers in the world. Yet, we are not seeing the pace of commercial technology advancement that we would expect. At the same time, other countries including China are surging ahead. We have to ask ourselves: is the United States going to remain a global leader in nuclear technology?

Book The Challenges to Nuclear Power in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book The Challenges to Nuclear Power in the Twenty First Century written by Behram N. Kursunogammalu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-16 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “International Energy Forum 1999” was held in Washington D.C. during November 5-6, 1999 in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Crystal City. Once again the main topic was Nuclear Energy. Various papers presented contained pros and cons of Nuclear Energy for generating electricity. We were aiming to clarify the often discussed subject matter of the virtues of Nuclear Energy with regard to Global Warming as compared to using fossil fuels for the generation of electricity. The latter is also currently the only way to operate our means of transportation like automobiles, planes etc. Therefore emission into the atmosphere of greenhouse gases constitutes the main source of Global Warming, which is absent in the case of Nuclear Energy. These arguments are often put forward to promote the use of Nuclear Energy. However not all is well with the Nuclear Energy. There are the questions of the waste problem so far unsolved, safety of Nuclear Reactors is not guaranteed to the extent that they are inherently safe. If we aim to construct inherently safe reactors, then the economics of a Nuclear Reactor makes it unacceptable.

Book The Technological and Economic Future of Nuclear Power

Download or read book The Technological and Economic Future of Nuclear Power written by Reinhard Haas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the eroding economics of nuclear power for electricity generation as well as technical, legal, and political acceptance issues. The use of nuclear power for electricity generation is still a heavily disputed issue. Aside from technical risks, safety issues, and the unsolved problem of nuclear waste disposal, the economic performance is currently a major barrier. In recent years, the costs have skyrocketed especially in the European countries and North America. At the same time, the costs of alternatives such as photovoltaics and wind power have significantly decreased. Contents History and Current Status of the World Nuclear Industry The Dramatic Decrease of the Economics of Nuclear Power Nuclear Policy in the EU The Legacy of Csernobyl and Fukushima Nuclear Waste and Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants Alternatives: Heading Towards Sustainable Electricity Systems Target Groups Researchers and students in the fields of political, economic and technical sciences Energy (policy) experts, nuclear energy experts and practitioners, economists, engineers, consultants, civil society organizations The Editors Prof. Dr. Reinhard Haas is University Professor of energy economics at the Institute of Energy Systems and Electric Drives at Technische Universität Wien, Austria.
