Book Between the Bocas

Download or read book Between the Bocas written by Jak Peake and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated opposite the mouth of the Orinoco River, western Trinidad has long been considered an entrepôt to mainland South America. Trinidad’s geographic position—seen as strategic by various imperial governments—led to many heterogeneous peoples from across the region and globe settling or being relocated there. The calm waters around the Gulf of Paria on the western fringes of Trinidad induced settlers to construct a harbour, Port of Spain, around which the modern capital has been formed. From its colonial roots into the postcolonial era, western Trinidad therefore has played an especial part in the shaping of the island’s literature. Viewed from one perspective, western Trinidad might be deemed as narrating the heart of the modern state’s national literature. Alternatively, the political threats posed around San Fernando in Trinidad’s southwest in the 1930s and from within the capital in the 1970s present a different picture of western Trinidad—one in which the fractures of Trinidad and Tobago’s projected nationalism are prevalent. While sugar remains a dominant narrative in Caribbean literary studies, this book offers a unique literary perspective on matters too often perceived as the sole preserve of sociological, anthropological or geographical studies. The legacy of the oil industry and the development of the suburban commuter belt of East-West Corridor, therefore, form considerable discursive nodes, alongside other key Trinidadian sites, such as Woodford Square, colonial houses and the urban yards of Port of Spain. This study places works by well-known authors such as V. S. Naipaul and Samuel Selvon, alongside writing by Michel Maxwell Philip, Marcella Fanny Wilkins, E. L. Joseph, Earl Lovelace, Ismith Khan, Monique Roffey, Arthur Calder-Marshall and the largely neglected novelist, Yseult Bridges, who is almost entirely forgotten today. Using fiction, calypso, history, memoir, legal accounts, poetry, essays and journalism, this study opens with an analysis of Trinidad’s nineteenth century literature and offers twentieth century and more contemporary readings of the island in successive chapters. Chapters are roughly arranged in chronological order around particular sites and topoi, while literature from a variety of authors of British, Caribbean, Irish and Jewish descent is represented.

Book excerpt: If God is everywhere, then God is in the ordinary happenings of everyday life and seeking God in and through daily life activities is a spiritual practice. God dwells in and through each human being to shine the life and light of the universe. God knows exactly what is needed to move creation to its next step and endows us with gifts needed to achieve it. Through the flow of life—events, family, relationships, work, hobbies, interests and personality—God works continually to create us anew. Our call is to observe life's happenings, feel their dynamism and make bold choices to live a larger life." God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen, my pick, my paintbrush, my needle — and my heart and my thoughts." Pierre Teilhard de Chardin “They should practice the seeking of God’s presence in all things, in their conversations, their walks, in all that they see, taste, hear, understand, and in all their actions, since His Divine Majesty is truly in all things by His presence, power, and essence.” St. Ignatius of Loyola, 1551 “The more you are in harmony with the flow of your existence, the more magical life becomes.” Adyashanti

Book God of Mercy

  • Author : Francis Green
  • Publisher : TEACH Services, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-04-08

  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book God of Mercy written by Francis Green and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is certainly a God of vengeance, who stands against evil and who is a terror to all who rejoice in darkness. Yet, this same God gave His only Son to save those very ones who declared themselves His enemies. Jesus was more than willing to leave His exalted place in Heaven and sacrifice Himself for those who hated Him. He would do this to save even just one soul from the darkness surrounding them. This is the God that the author fell in love with! This is the God who would pursue each of us to the very gates of hell. And this is the God who gave both holy life and holy blood that we might be saved into His kingdom! Like the warrior, King David, who sang the praises of the One he called “the God of Mercy,” Francis Green uses his passion for poetry to celebrate his love for this God who saves all who are willing to accept that precious gift. It will be indeed, only by the mercy of God, that any of us “enter into the joy” of our Lord! It is to that God of Mercy and His glorious Son that this collection of devotional poetry is prayerfully offered.

Book Strange Vagabond of God

Download or read book Strange Vagabond of God written by John Dove and published by Gracewing Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Bradburne's life was a remarkable spiritual odyssey. After wartime service on the Indian sub-continent he became a perennial pilgrim, never at home in the world, not even in his native England. Restless wanderings led him through Europe to the Holy Land, to a succession of religious communities, and ultimately to Africa, where he met a violent death during the Zimbabwean war of independence in 1979. This astonishing account of his life among the lepers, and the astonishing events at his funeral, make it clear that here was a man marked with special charisma, who was marked out for sanctity. Since his death devotion to his memory has sprung up in southern Africa and elsewhere. Poet, mystic, hermit and vagabond, John Bradburne's life was a ceaseless quest for God. Fr John Dove SJ first met John Bradburne during the Second World War. He entered the Jesuits in 1949 and served the Zimbabwe mission for over thirty years.

Book excerpt: Soul on the Run is the gut-wrenchingly honest portrayal of one woman's search for herself, and her refusal to continue playing the game of \"let's pretend everything is okay.\" What's more, it reminds us-when we are honest with ourselves-we can start life over at any age. Korth's words are pithy and raw, sometimes almost brutal, and often just plain funny. There are common sense insights into doing life and a sometimes mystic questing into the hidden avenues of the human heart. To read this book is to journey into your own heart and spirit. The questions and comments of this woman's piercing search for joy and meaning will spark your own. You cannot read this book without becoming a participant in your own soul's journey towards life.

Download or read book Holy Desperation written by Heather King and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 International Book Awards, Finalist: Christianity 2018 Catholic Press Association Book Awards, Third Place: Prayer, Books about Prayer 2018 Association of Catholic Publishers’ “Excellence in Publishing Awards,” First Place: Inspiration 2018 Association of Catholic Publishers’ “Excellence in Publishing Awards,” BOOK OF THE YEAR When life has driven you to your knees, the only thing that works is prayer. Desperation has many faces: the addict who has hit bottom; the laid-off worker struggling to make the next house payment; the person who seems to have it all together but is wracked with fear, guilt, anger, or shame. We know we need help, but we are afraid to let anyone—especially God—see how broken we truly are. In Holy Desperation, Heather King demonstrates that, when we’re desperate, it’s precisely the right time to cry out to God. King, a survivor of addiction and other forms of desperation, begins with the basics of how to pray when you’re uncertain that God exists or when you feel that you’re beyond God’s reach. She challenges the assumptions that only the saintly can pray and that prayer ought to be tidy and nice. She reveals how prayer leads us beyond ourselves and into a life of purpose, lived for the good of others. Ultimately, Holy Desperation is an invitation to engage in bold, come-exactly-as-you-are prayer, offering a way forward, upward, and outward for anyone desperate enough to cry out for God’s help and presence. You are not alone.
