Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystic Quest explains the major ideas and concepts of Jewish mystical thought in a way that the general reader can clearly understand. Drawing upon his own extensive research as well as on the growing body of scholarly material on the subject, Dr. David Ariel, president of the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies, presents the extremely difficult and complex elements of Jewish mysticism in language that makes it accessible to the layperson. Jewish mysticism is as old as the Bible itself. It is a rich and subtle web of secret teachings and practices that has been part of Judaism since antiquity and has sought to keep the original spark of religious experience alive through the centuries. It is the relatively unknown, esoteric dimension of Judaism that has nourished a deep spiritual power within a tradition of law, ritual, and observance. A central element in Judaism, the "mystic quest" has shaped both Judaism and Jews throughout history, generating the kabbalistic tradition and Hasidism, which continue to thrive today, As Ariel says, "This book is concerned primarily with the development and meaning of the Kabbalah, the principal tradition of mystical Jewish thought." The Mystic Quest begins with an examination of the variety of phenomena known in different cultures as "mysticism." Ariel then located the Jewish mystical tradition within the context of Jewish history and traces its evolution throughout the ages. Jewish mystical theories about the hidden and revealed God, the feminine aspects of divinity, the mystical Torah, and the concepts of the soul and human destiny are then explored in detail. Finally, the author considers Hasidism and modern Jewish mystical thought, discussing the role of mysticism in contemporary Judaism. In language accessible to the beginner, yet sophisticated enough to captivate the advanced student, The Mystic Quest fills an important gap in our knowledge of mysticism by bringing a comprehensive and fresh understanding of the subject to a new generation of

Book Why Does God Seem So Hidden

Download or read book Why Does God Seem So Hidden written by Joshua C. Waltman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does God seem so hidden, obscure, and silent? Why doesn't he make himself known in a more explicit way to those who dispute his existence? This line of questioning presents a perplexing conundrum for Christian theologians. On the one hand, Christians affirm that God's revelation of himself is sufficient, but, on the other hand, it appears that some genuine seekers remain unconvinced of his existence. In recent decades, philosopher J. L. Schellenberg has proposed an argument for atheism that attempts to exploit this apparent contradiction. This book offers a new take by approaching the conversation using a Trinitarian theological lens. The character of Trinitarian love shapes the way God communicates in pursuit of relationships. Namely, God desires spiritually oriented, communal divine-human relationships, and this endeavor necessarily entails hiddenness. This work proposes five spiritual criteria that an individual must meet to be open to having a relationship with the triune God, and these are the criteria that atheists have failed to consider. Articulating these five is exactly what is needed to resolve the vexing theological puzzle of divine hiddenness.

How is it possible that we still have the same Bible that was written over 3000 years ago? What happened to the Ten Lost tribes? Why is there no mention of the story of Esther in world history? Why is Judaism passed on only through the mother? Batya Shemesh was bothered by these questions and more. With Gods help she discovered that many of the answers were secretly hidden in the Bible and waiting to be discovered.

Book Trinity Freedom and Love

Download or read book Trinity Freedom and Love written by Piotr Malysz and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By critically engaging Eberhard Jüngel's doctrine of the Trinity, this volume makes a broader, constructive contribution to contemporary trinitarian thought. The argument centers on the question - posed by the inconsistencies uncovered in Jüngel's doctrine of God - of how one can assert both divine freedom and the inter-subjectivity of God's trinitarian self-determination. Can one maintain God's freedom in the interest of divine spontaneity and creativity, while remaining committed to inter-subjective vulnerability which the Cross entails as an event of divine love? Malysz suggests that a resolution to this problem lies in a logic of divine freedom, which, next to the trinitarian logic of love, constitutes a different and simultaneous mode of trinitarian relationality. To develop this logic, Malysz draws on Jüngel's understanding of human freedom as rooted in the "elemental interruption" of the self-securing subject. Malysz thus not only brings Jüngel's view of divine freedom into correspondence with the anthropological effects that Jüngel ascribes to it, but, above all, offers an imaginative, new way of closely integrating the doctrine of God and theological anthropology.

Book Animals as Seen Through God S Eyes

Download or read book Animals as Seen Through God S Eyes written by Dwila R. Funk and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what happens to your beloved pet when he or she dies? Will you ever be able to see him or her again in heaven? Or have you been plagued by the disturbing thought that animals are only here on earth for our enjoyment in this life but when they die, that is it for them, and they are gone forever? This haunted me for decades until I finally got up enough courage to seek out the truth for myself. I went to the word of God to conduct my own research. This book is the result of my quest to find the truth about how God really sees animals and His plan for them. I was astounded by the wealth of information that God shares in the Holy Bible regarding animals. The answers are there, hidden in His word. All anyone needs to do is look.

Book Jewish Christian Dialogue and the Life of Wisdom

Download or read book Jewish Christian Dialogue and the Life of Wisdom written by Matthew Levering and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book inquires as to whether theological dialogue between Christians and Jews is possible, not only in itself but also as regards the emergence of communities of Messianic Judaism. In light of David Novak's insights, Matthew Levering proposes that Christian theological responses to supersessionism need to preserve both the Church's development of doctrine and Rabbinic Judaism's ability to define its own boundaries. The book undertakes constructive philosophical theology in dialogue with Novak. Exploring the interrelated doctrines of divine providence/theonomy, the image of God, and natural law, Levering places Novak's work in conversation especially with Thomas Aquinas, whose approach fosters a rich dialogue with Novak's broadly Maimonidean perspective. It focuses upon the relationship of human beings to the Creator, with attention to the philosophical entailments of Jewish and Christian covenantal commitments, aiming to spell out what true freedom involves. It concludes by asking whether Christians and Jews would do better to bracket our covenantal commitments in pursuing such wisdom. Drawing upon Novak's work, the author argues that in the face of suffering and death, God's covenantal election makes possible hope, lacking which the quest for wisdom runs aground.

Book Magic Monsters and Make Believe Heroes

Download or read book Magic Monsters and Make Believe Heroes written by Douglas E. Cowan and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magic, Monsters, and Make-Believe Heroes looks at fantasy film, television, and participative culture as evidence of our ongoing need for a mythic vision—for stories larger than ourselves into which we write ourselves and through which we can become the heroes of our own story. Why do we tell and retell the same stories over and over when we know they can’t possibly be true? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not because pop culture has run out of good ideas. Rather, it is precisely because these stories are so fantastic, some resonating so deeply that we elevate them to the status of religion. Illuminating everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dungeons and Dragons, and from Drunken Master to Mad Max, Douglas E. Cowan offers a modern manifesto for why and how mythology remains a vital force today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foreknowledge of God Centuries back, the world's population believed the planet was flat... a mere "plane." And when the scientist presented his theory, that it was a "globe," he fell in disgrace and was jailed. Believing the "tale" of a flat planet, fishermen would sail a distance that kept them within eyesight of the shoreline. This, supposedly, because going beyond that distance would plunge them "over the edge" of the plane, to a "black void" that meant a horrible death. Indeed, they paid dearly for this false sense of security. As a matter of fact, it kept them from sailing the high seas, where in times of famine fish would have been over-abundant. Today, millions of Christians, suffering from a similar, myopic view of the spiritual Realm, persist in believing the "plane" theory of God's Fore-Knowledge. But now. the time has come for you to sail the spiritual high seas of The Realm of Eternal Existence. So lift the anchor of your faith, raise the sails of your understanding and set the prow of your soul's ship towards uncharted frontiers. You may yet find the unimagined spiritual riches that your heart has been yearning for. But for that, you must begin the Search. R. A. Chevrés, Missionary Pastor Has testified for Christ around the globe, touching lives in forty seven countries, over a span of thirty-one years.
