Sans viser à rendre compte de manière exhaustive du long "temps des réformes", les contributions traitent de la période qui commence avec l'épiscopat de Georges de Saluces (1440-1461) jusqu'à la grave crise que connaît le Pays de Vaud en 1558-1559, qui conduit au bannissement de Pierre Viret parle souverain bernois. Le cadre géographique retenu est, avant 1536, celui de l'Eglise de Lausanne, mère du diocèse, et, après 1536, celui du Pays de Vaud bernois. Alors que l'historiographie ancienne s'est surtout focalisée sur la Réforme en tant que rupture théologique et institutionnelle, ce dossier thématique met en perspective cette dernière avec des courants réformateurs de la fin du Moyen Age et avec des phénomènes de résistances au début de l'époque moderne. En privilégiant un traitement sur près d'un siècle, il révèle la diversité de l'objet "réformes" envisagé non seulement sur le plan doctrinal mais aussi dans ses aspects économiques, sociaux et culturels.
