Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Elizabeth These were not creditable proceedings to submit to the judgment of'the English people. They were not attached to Catherine, and they ardently wished for a male successor to the throne. They had not sympathised with the King's foreign policy, and they longed to be free from its complications, and manage their national concerns in peace. They had no love for the Pope, and wished priests and monks to be reduced to their due place in the new society which was slowly coming into existence. They were desirous of more common-sense and simplicity in religious matters, and had little sympathy with the old-fashioned pretentiousness of the Churchmen. They were quite willing that the King should manage his personal matters as he thought best, provided he left them in peace. But still, when all had been done and settled, they shook their heads, and felt that there had been at work an amount of. To make lists of her faults and virtues is easy. One may say with little fear of contradiction that her in tellect was magnificent and her vanity almost in credibly childish; that she was at one time the most outspoken of women, at another the most untruthful; that on one occasion she would mani fest a dignity thalz was truly sovereign, while on another the rudeness; of filler: manners was un worthy oi even the ageein which she lived. Already they had had rough experience of the treatment to which an unwary traveller might be exposed; and as the town of Romsey, could not be very far distant, it seemed advisable to push onwards if possible, and either halt there for the night, or at least strive to gain some small inn, or even some woodman's cabin, where they would have a roof over their heads, and some sort of bed for the wounded lad. Book The Private Character of Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Private Character of Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint written by Frederick Chamberlin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Character of Queen Elizabeth When, eight years ago, I set aside all other affairs to write a biographyof Queen Elizabeth, I planned the usual chronological work that, volume by volume, would unfold her career from her birth to her death - this despite the warning of Sir Anthony Weldon, who, in A Brief History of the Kings of England (1652), omitted all particulars of the reign of Elizabeth with this cryptic explanation: "If why I omit ... Queen Elizabeth, I answer I have nothing to do with women, and I wish I never had." I have, however, never been able to control the MS. of this publication. The material for it, as it gradually came to light, demanded a treatment other than that provided by the original scheme; and in the end I have had to submit to the most radical alterations of it. The same will probably be said of the succeeding volume. At the outset I was led to a most critical reading of Froude and Lingard - a comparison of their more important statements with the facts, and a weighing of their interpretation and treatment of them. In this I made the usual error of approaching Froude's twelve volumes from the standpoint of the ordinary reader - that is, as a continuous story of the Reformation period. Taken in this fashion, Froude is irresistible. He has had few equals as a writer of attractive English prose, and as an alluring historian none at all, except Macaulay. His many thousand pages are as fascinating as the best of romances. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Two Historical Plays on the Life and Reign of Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Two Historical Plays on the Life and Reign of Queen Elizabeth Classic Reprint written by Thomas Heywood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Historical Plays on the Life and Reign of Queen Elizabeth The first part, (which we may call The Troubles of Queen Elizabeth as it has come down to us, can only be considered the fragment of a play, and, upon evidence we shall adduce presently, we may assume that it found its way to the press by means of short hand notes, taken m the theatre while the drama was in a course of representation. Why the author did not think it worth while, in any subsequent impression, to render it more complete, we know not. The second part, which deals with the events of Elizabeth's reign, as our readers will perceive, is much more perfect, and runs out to a much greater length: from that, we feel persuaded, nothing important was omitted. When, therefore, Heywood printed, in his Pleasant Dialogues and Dramas, 8vo, 1637, (p. 248) the follow ing Prologue and Epilogue, he must have intended them, and the introduction to them, to apply only to the first part, The Troubles of Queen Elizabeth, beginning in her minority, and ending with her accession to the royal throne, a potent Queen, in November, 1558. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of London in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth Under the tide "Shakespeare's London" I delivered a lecture in 1886, and again in the winter of 1887. Another lecture on the same subject, delivered at the Working Men's College in 1893, I entitled "Elizabethan London," partly because, in this lecture, I drew a contrast between Victorian London and the London of Shakespeare, but chiefly for the reason that I was then meditating the book which now sees the light, and reserved the title for this occasion. The book has grown out of these lectures, and it covers all the ground specially emphasised in each of them. Its scope may be readily indicated by the themes of the lectures. In the first, I dealt chiefly with the theatres in Shakespeare's London. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She had hair of a colour between pale auburn and yellow, black eyes, which were beau tiful and lively, a fair, clear complexion, a Roman nose, a small mouth with thin, firmly set lips, and a forehead broad and high. Her face was striking and commanding rather than delicately beautiful, the countenance of one born to rule. She pos sessed many personal attractions and no one could be more charming and gracious upon occasion than this mighty Princess of the Royal House of Tudor, with that slow, sweet smile of hers and her quick, ever-ready wit. Sir Francis Bacon says, She was tall Of stature, of comely limbs, and excellent feature in her countenance; majesty sat under veil of sweet ness, and her health was sound and prosperous.
