Book Geology of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Geology of the Pacific Northwest written by William N. Orr and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2006-12-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geologic history of the Pacific Northwest is as unique as the region itself. Created via tectonic plate movements and accretionary events, the original terranes were subsequently covered by sedimentary layers, ash, lavas, and glacial debris. These processes, begun millions of years ago, continue to affect the area, as seen in the eruption of Mount St. Helens and catastrophic Japanese tsunamis created by earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest. Understanding of the regions geology has led to new insight in volcanic eruption prediction, disaster preparedness, the environmental effects of mining, and urban development as it relates to geologic hazards. The Orrs detailed and informative writing style appeals to those with geologic training as well as beginners with an interest in the region. Each chapter covers a specific subregion, allowing for maximum flexibility both in the classroom and for the casual reader. The authors central theme that continental plate tectonics are the fundamental processes of Northwest geologic history permeates throughout the book.

Book Quaternary Geology of Southern Melville Peninsula Nunavut

Download or read book Quaternary Geology of Southern Melville Peninsula Nunavut written by L. A. Dredge and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from an investigation of the Quaternary geology & geomorphology of the south half of Melville Peninsula, Nunavut. The purpose of the investigation was to map the area systematically in order to determine the distribution, character, & origin of surface materials and to reconstruct the Quaternary history of the area. The first part provides background information on previous research, bedrock geology, and physiography of the area. The next part describes the nature & distribution of surficial materials & landforms, including information on their physical properties, texture, & composition along with interpretation of their mode of formation. A subsequent section on present geomorphic processes addresses topics of particular interest to environmental concerns & land management. The final section emphasizes those elements that concern mineral exploration, specifically the provenance of till, directions & distances of glacial transport, concentrations of elements in till, and their relationship to bedrock geology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the surficial geology of Prince of Wales Island, Northwest Territories, central Arctic, as a basis for reconstruction of preglacial evolution, glacial history and postglacial history of the landscape.

Book Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Smithers Terrace Prince Rupert Area British Columbia

Download or read book Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Smithers Terrace Prince Rupert Area British Columbia written by John J. Clague and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a detailed description of the unconsolidated sedimentary materials and landforms in the Smithers-Terrace-Prince Rupert region, and an account of the geological processes that have been active in shaping this area during late Quaternary time. The information in this report is vital to an understanding of the character and distribution of agriculatural soils, the nature of foundation conditions, the location and extent of construction aggregate and aquifers, and the nature of natural hazards in the region.

Book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology

Download or read book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology written by J. Ehlers and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-02 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Also available:Part I: Europe, ISBN 0-444-51462-7Part III: South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, ISBN 0-444-51593-3

Book Quaternary Geology of Central Melville Island Northwest Territories

Download or read book Quaternary Geology of Central Melville Island Northwest Territories written by D. A. Hodgson and published by Geological Survey of Canada. This book was released on 1984 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report completes a project designed to study the Quaternarygeology of central Melville Island including Dundas Peninsula. It contains descriptions of surficial materials together with anoutline of the Quaternary history with particular emphasis onlate Quaternary glacial and marine events. Dundas Peninsula isof particular interest since continental ice sheets reached theirmaximum limits in this area on several occasions. A particularlyimportant reason for examining south-central Melville Island isthe projected routing (at the time of writing) of one or morenatural gas transportation systems through it. Nonetheless, thisstudy is not designed to provide geotechnical information for anyone project, but rather to provide information relevant toengineering, land management, or environmental impact studies, aswell as regional Quaternary studies.

Book Quaternary Geology of St Anthony Blanc Sablon Area Newfoundland and Quebec

Download or read book Quaternary Geology of St Anthony Blanc Sablon Area Newfoundland and Quebec written by D. R. Grant and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was prompted by a need for data on terrain conditions, soil materials, and glacial transport, which was required for mineral exploration, for the planning of a hydroelectric transmission corridor, for bedrock mapping, for forest inventory, and for land capability studies. A secondary reason for beginning a program of surficial mapping in this part of Newfoundland was the paucity of Quaternary geological information in a key area about which early reports debated the extent of glaciation, and where airphoto reconnaissance revealed significant new glacial and marine formations.
