This, the first of three volumes, gives an account of Hebridean geology, landforms and climate, followed by a resume of findings on glaciation in the region. The chapters on coastal development and erosion contain newly-researched material, and the volume concludes with a chapter on climate and soils.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In describing the geomorphological heritage of Scotland, this volume offers a remarkable account of how the natural environment responded in terms of landforms, processes and plant communities, to severe climatic change as the Quaternary era progressed over the last two million years. This legacy, as preserved in the 138 nationally important GCR sites described, documents a remarkable diversity of landforms in a relatively small area. The rugged highland contrast with the rolling hills and flat plains found further south, while the western and northern islands, together with the highly-indented coastline add further to the scenic diversity. How this variety of landscapes came into being, the forces which shaped it , and the climatic extremes which drove it, are the themes explored in this volume.

Book excerpt: This latest memoir from the British Geological Survey concentrates on the Outer Hebrides, which lie on the north western seaboard of Scotland. They display a wide range of scenery - from the rugged cliffs and mountains of Harris to the gentle sandy duneland of South Uist, and they contain some of the most ancient rocks exposed in Europe. A comprehensive survey of the geological make-up of this archipelago is presented in a slipcase complete with a folder containing maps illustrating lithology and structure.

Book Quaternary and Glacial Geology

Download or read book Quaternary and Glacial Geology written by Jürgen Ehlers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quaternary geology is the study of the most recent period of geological time, looking at the Earth in terms of its development as a planet. This books examines the history of its life forms, the materials of which it is made, processes that affect these materials, and products that are formed from them.

Book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition

Download or read book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition written by N. H. Trewin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.

Book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology

Download or read book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology written by J. Ehlers and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-06-08 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial workers, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated are included. For major parts of Europe also the extent of the maximum Eemian transgression has been indicated. The digital maps in this volume cover all of Europe and parts of northwestern Siberia. Both overview maps and more detailed maps are provided.

Book excerpt: Over the past six years a team of archaeologists, historians and environmental scientists from the University of Sheffield explored the island of Barra. They have discovered and recorded many hundreds of previously unknown sites and monuments, excavated selected examples, and carried out extensive environmental sampling and laboratory based analysis of all this evidence. The first volume of reports focuses on the wild and rocky peninsula of Tangaval at the south-western corner of the island. In this seemingly inhospitable place, on the westernmost margin of Europe, perched on the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the team have discovered almost 250 sites and monuments. They range from the first rock-shelter and occupation huts of the earliest settlers around 4000 BC to the abandoned settlements from which Macneils sailed to new homes in America and Australasia in the mid-nineteenth century BC.
