Book Boundary Control of Quasi Linear Hyperbolic Initial Boundary Value Problem

Download or read book Boundary Control of Quasi Linear Hyperbolic Initial Boundary Value Problem written by Jonathan de Halleux and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2004 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis presents different control design approaches for stabilizing networks of quasi-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. These equations are usually conservative, which gives them interesting properties to design stabilizing control laws. Two main design approaches are developed: a methodology based on entropies and Lyapunov functions and a methodology based on the Riemann invariants. The stability theorems are illustrated using numerical simulations. Two practical applications of these methodologies are presented. Network of navigation channels are modelled using the Saint-Venant equation (also known as the Shallow Water Equations). The stabilization problem of such system has an industrial importance in order to satisfy the navigation constraints and to optimize the production of electricity in hydroelectric plants, usually located at each hydraulic gate. A second application deals with the regulation of water waves in moving tanks. This problem is also modelled by a modified version of the shallow water equations and appears in a number industrial fields which deal with liquid moving parts.

Book Mathematical Aspects of Numerical Solution of Hyperbolic Systems

Download or read book Mathematical Aspects of Numerical Solution of Hyperbolic Systems written by A.G. Kulikovskii and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-12-21 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book sets forth a comprehensive description of various mathematical aspects of problems originating in numerical solution of hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. The authors present the material in the context of the important mechanical applications of such systems, including the Euler equations of gas dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), shallow water, and solid dynamics equations. This treatment provides-for the first time in book form-a collection of recipes for applying higher-order non-oscillatory shock-capturing schemes to MHD modelling of physical phenomena. The authors also address a number of original "nonclassical" problems, such as shock wave propagation in rods and composite materials, ionization fronts in plasma, and electromagnetic shock waves in magnets. They show that if a small-scale, higher-order mathematical model results in oscillations of the discontinuity structure, the variety of admissible discontinuities can exhibit disperse behavior, including some with additional boundary conditions that do not follow from the hyperbolic conservation laws. Nonclassical problems are accompanied by a multiple nonuniqueness of solutions. The authors formulate several selection rules, which in some cases easily allow a correct, physically realizable choice. This work systematizes methods for overcoming the difficulties inherent in the solution of hyperbolic systems. Its unique focus on applications, both traditional and new, makes Mathematical Aspects of Numerical Solution of Hyperbolic Systems particularly valuable not only to those interested the development of numerical methods, but to physicists and engineers who strive to solve increasingly complicated nonlinear equations.

Book Exact Boundary Controllability of Nodal Profile for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems

Download or read book Exact Boundary Controllability of Nodal Profile for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems written by Tatsien Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile, a new kind of exact boundary controllability stimulated by some practical applications. This kind of controllability is useful in practice as it does not require any precisely given final state to be attained at a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls, instead it requires the state to exactly fit any given demand (profile) on one or more nodes after a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls. In this book we present a general discussion of this kind of controllability for general 1-D first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems and for general 1-D quasilinear wave equations on an interval as well as on a tree-like network using a modular-structure construtive method, suggested in LI Tatsien's monograph "Controllability and Observability for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems"(2010), and we establish a complete theory on the local exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for 1-D quasilinear hyperbolic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the 1967 Battelle Rencontres was so much appre ciated by the participants and organizers of this experimental set-up that it was soon decided to go on with the experiment. Mathematicians and physicists had found a very suitable frame to overcome their natural shyness, to get occasionally interested into each others' work, to talk 1968 Rencontres have about it, and eventually to know each other. The been organized with the same idea in mind, and even somewhat enlarged in the following sense: the topic chosen - hyperbolic equations and waves - has proved a cornerstone of physics for more than a century and extends over most fields of contemporary physics. It follows immediately that the wide range of physicists concerned could not be represented by more than a couple of specialists in any single field. Thus, aside from bridging the gap between mathematicians and physicists, the 1968 Recontres provided a rather unique occasion to plug many intra disciplinary gaps among physicists. This made the Rencontres quite unpredictable as to how people would - and could - interact, and created a very stimulating environ ment for an unprecedented intellectual venture. From the outside, it may very well look like a hodge-podge of quite unrelated ideas. But it was much less so at the level of day-to-day discussions and informal gatherings where all slowly acquired a comprehensive synthetic view of the subject.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Waves: The Mathematical Theory With Applications The subject of surface gravity waves has great variety whether regarded from the point of View of the types of physical problem which occur, or from the point of View of the mathematical ideas and methods needed to attack them. The physical problems range from discussion of wave motion over sloping beaches to flood waves in rivers, the motion of ships in a sea-way, free oscillations of enclosed bodies of water such as lakes and harbors, and the propagation of frontal discontinuities in the atmosphere, to mention just a few. The mathematical tools employed comprise just about the whole of the tools developed in the classical linear mathematical physics concerned with partial differential equations, as well as a good part of what has been learned about the nonlinear problems of mathe matical physics. Thus potential theory and the theory of the linear wave equation, together with such tools as conformal mapping and complex variable methods in general, the Laplace and Fourier transform techniques, methods employing a Green's function, integral equations, etc. Are used. The nonlinear problems are of both elliptic and hyperbolic type. In spite of the diversity of the material, the book, is not a collection of disconnected topics, written for specialists, and lacking unity and coherence. Instead, considerable pains have been taken to supply the fundamental background in hydrodynamics and also in some of the mathematics needed and to plan the book in order that it should be as much as possible a self - contained and readable whole. Though the contents of the book are outlined in detail below, it has some point to indicate briefly here its general plan. There are four main parts of the book. Book Water Waves The Mathematical Theory with Applications

Download or read book Water Waves The Mathematical Theory with Applications written by James Johnston Stoker and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1957, this is a classic monograph in the area of applied mathematics. It offers a connected account of the mathematical theory of wave motion in a liquid with a free surface and subjected to gravitational and other forces, together with applications to a wide variety of concrete physical problems. A never-surpassed text, it remains of permanent value to a wide range of scientists and engineers concerned with problems in fluid mechanics. The four-part treatment begins with a presentation of the derivation of the basic hydrodynamic theory for non-viscous incompressible fluids and a description of the two principal approximate theories that form the basis for the rest of the book. The second section centers on the approximate theory that results from small-amplitude wave motions. A consideration of problems involving waves in shallow water follows, and the text concludes with a selection of problems solved in terms of the exact theory. Despite the diversity of its topics, this text offers a unified, readable, and largely self-contained treatment.
