Download or read book Keys to the Drama written by Gordon Sly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonata form is fundamentally a dramatic structure that creates, manipulates, and ultimately satisfies expectation. It engages its audience by inviting prediction, association, and interpretation. That sonata form was the chief vehicle of dramatic instrumental music for nearly 200 years is due to the power, the universality, and the tonal and stylistic adaptability of its conception. This book presents nine studies whose central focus is sonata form. Their diversity attests both to the manifold analytical approaches to which the form responds, and to the vast range of musical possibility within the form's exemplars. At the same time, common compositional issues, analytical methods, and overarching perspectives on the essential nature of the form weave their way through the volume. Several of the essays approach the musical structure directly as drama, casting the work as an expression of its composer's engagement with an idea or principle that is dynamic and at times intensely difficult. Others concentrate their attention on a composer's use of "motive," which typically takes the form of a simple melodic span that shapes the musical architecture through an interdependent series of structural levels. Integrating these motivic threads within the musical fabric often warrants departures from formal norms in other areas. Analyses that seek to understand works with anomalous formal qualities-whether engendered by a motivic component or not-have a prominent place in the volume. Among these, accounts of idiosyncratic tonal discourse that threatens to undermine the unfolding of form-defining qualities or events are central.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for the music student, the professional musician, and the music lover, Chamber Music: An Essential History covers repertoire from the Renaissance to the present, crossing genres to include string quartets, piano trios, clarinet quintets, and other groupings. Mark A. Radice gives a thorough overview and history of this long-established and beloved genre, typically performed by groups of a size to fit into spaces such as homes or churches and tending originally toward the string and wind instruments rather than percussion. Radice begins with chamber music's earliest expressions in the seventeenth century, discusses its most common elements in terms of instruments and compositional style, and then investigates how those elements play out across several centuries of composers- among them Mozart, Bach, Haydn, and Brahms- and national interpretations of chamber music. While Chamber Music: An Essential History is intended largely as a textbook, it will also find an audience as a companion volume for musicologists and fans of classical music, who may be interested in the background to a familiar and important genre.

Book excerpt: Life of Mozart in three volumes is a biography of famous Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart written for the centenary of his birth. It was written by German scholar Otto Jahn who collected the written sources on the life of the composer for the first time and evaluated them using philological methods. The book is basically an Encyclopedia of musical art and biography. It presents, not only the narrative of Mozart's life in the smallest details, with a thorough examination of each work, but it also deals with the rise and progress of each branch of music that Mozart touched. Jahn also provides a detailed account of the social and musical state of the numerous cities visited by Mozart, such as Paris, Munich, and Vienna, and biographical sketches of people in Mozart's life. Jahn's biography of Mozart is of great importance for musicology and remains fundamental to Mozart research.
