Book Quarantine Zone

Download or read book Quarantine Zone written by Daniel H. Wilson and published by DC. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times best-selling author Daniel H. Wilson delivers a thrilling sci-fi series that raises hard questions about free will and the nature of good and evil. Humanity has discovered the root of all evil: the Malnoro virus-a devastating malady that modifies the neural pathways for empathy. Those infected have been forcibly imprisoned in the Quarantine Zone (whether they choose to do good or evil). Meanwhile, the rest of the cured world is sterile and crime-free, but permeated by an oppressive, paranoid fear of new outbreaks. If we could "cure" ourselves of the capability to do evil, should we? And could a person truly be good without the choice to do evil?

Book The Right to Live in Health

Download or read book The Right to Live in Health written by Daniel A. Rodríguez and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel A. Rodriguez's history of a newly independent Cuba shaking off the U.S. occupation focuses on the intersection of public health and politics in Havana. While medical policies were often used to further American colonial power, in Cuba, Rodriguez argues, they evolved into important expressions of anticolonial nationalism as Cuba struggled to establish itself as a modern state. A younger generation of Cuban medical reformers, including physicians, patients, and officials, imagined disease as a kind of remnant of colonial rule. These new medical nationalists, as Rodriguez calls them, looked to medical science to guide Cuba toward what they envisioned as a healthy and independent future. Rodriguez describes how medicine and new public health projects infused republican Cuba's statecraft, powerfully shaping the lives of Havana's residents. He underscores how various stakeholders, including women and people of color, demanded robust government investment in quality medical care for all Cubans, a central national value that continues today. On a broader level, Rodriguez proposes that Latin America, at least as much as the United States and Europe, was an engine for the articulation of citizens' rights, including the right to health care, in the twentieth century.

Seventeen-year-old Maisie Rojas has spent her entire life in the Q—a post-pandemic quarantine zone that was once Austin, Texas. Born and raised behind the high security walls that sealed their fate, she's now a trusted lieutenant for one of the territory's controlling families. Lennon Pierce, the charismatic son of a US presidential candidate, has just been kidnapped by his father's enemies and dropped out of a plane into the Q with nothing but a parachute strapped to his back. Lennon is given a temporary antidote to the disease and crucial intel for his father, but Maisie must get him out of the zone within forty-eight hours--or he will be permanently infected and forced to remain. With unrest brewing both inside and outside the Q, reaching the exit is a daunting and dangerous task. But if Maisie and Lennon fail, it could mean disaster for the entire quarantine zone and its inhabitants—and could cost Lennon his life. Book Crop Biosecurity

Download or read book Crop Biosecurity written by Maria Lodovica Gullino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-24 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prevention and preparedness are the two basic approaches to maximize food security against any sort of tampering, whether natural, inadvertent or intentional. The NATO funded project “Tools for crop biosecurity” was designed to strengthen the cooperation among U.S., Europe and Israel in the field of crop biosecurity and to generate awareness on how the psychological, economic and cultural consequences of crop bioterrorism, especially attacks on soft targets such as crop seeds, could have a disproportionate adverse effect on Mediterranean agriculture and, more generally, on society. This book illustrates the achievements of the project originated from the workshops organized during the project itself taking in consideration main microbiological threads posed to crops, the tools to recognize and to control them, the needs for international cooperation and research funds to create networks which can face emerging risks for agriculture.
