Book Conceptual Foundations of Quantum Physics

Download or read book Conceptual Foundations of Quantum Physics written by Dipankar Home and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may tum out that, like certain other phenomena studied by sociologists, bouts of interest in the foundations of quantum mechanics tend to come in 60-year cycles. It is hardly surprising that in the first decade or so of the subject the conceptual puzzles generated by this strange new way of looking at the world should have generated profound interest, not just among professional physicists themselves but also among philosophers and informed laymen; but this intense interest was followed by a fallow period in the forties and fifties when the physics establishment by and large took the view that the only puzzles left were the product either of incompetent application of the formalism or of bad philosophy, and only a few brave individualists like the late David Bohm dared to suggest that maybe there really was something there after all to worry about. As Bell and Nauenberg, surveying the scene in 1966, put it: "The typical physicist feels that [these questions 1 have long ago been answered, and that he will fully understand how if ever he can spare twenty minutes to think about it. " But gradually, through the sixties and seventies, curiosity did revive, and the last ten years or so have seen a level of interest in foundational questions, and an involvement in them by some of the leading figures of contemporary physics, which is probably unparalleled since the earliest days.

  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book The Quantum World written by Bernard d'Espagnat and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this largely nontechnical book, eminent physicists and philosophers address the philosophical impact of recent advances in quantum physics. These are shown to shed new light on profound questions about realism, determinism, causality or locality. The participants contribute in the spirit of an open and honest discussion, reminiscent of the time when science and philosophy were inseparable. After the editors’ introduction, the next chapter reveals the strangeness of quantum mechanics and the subsequent discussions examine our notion of reality. The spotlight is then turned to the topic of decoherence. Bohm’s theory is critically examined in two chapters, and the relational interpretation of quantum mechanics is likewise described and discussed. The penultimate chapter presents a proposal for resolving the measurement problem, and finally the topic of loop quantum gravity is presented by one of its founding fathers, Carlo Rovelli. The original presentations and discussions on which this volume is based took place under the auspices of the French “Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques”. The book will appeal to everybody interested in knowing how our description of the world is impacted by the results of the most powerful and successful theory that physicists have ever built.

Book The World According to Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book The World According to Quantum Mechanics written by Ulrich Mohrhoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable supplement to standard textbooks on quantum mechanics, this unique introduction to the general theoretical framework of contemporary physics focuses on conceptual, epistemological, and ontological issues. The theory is developed by pursuing the question: what does it take to have material objects that neither collapse nor explode as soon as they are formed? The stability of matter thus emerges as the chief reason why the laws of physics have the particular form that they do.The first of the book's three parts familiarizes the reader with the basics by discussing crucial experiments, a brief historical survey, and by following Feynman's route to the Schr”dinger equation. The necessary mathematics is introduced along the way, to the point that all relevant theoretical concepts can be adequately grasped. Part II gets down to the nitty-gritty. As the theory takes shape, it is applied to various experimental arrangements. Many of these are central to the discussion in the final part, which aims at making epistemological and ontological sense of the theory. Pivotal to this task is an understanding of the special status that quantum mechanics attributes to measurements ? without dragging in ?the consciousness of the observer.? Key to this understanding is a rigorous definition of ?macroscopic? which, while rarely even attempted, is conveniently provided in this book.

Book Symbiotic Autoethnography

Download or read book Symbiotic Autoethnography written by Liana Beattie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autoethnography is generating increasing levels of interest in research circles, gaining popularity as an innovative and inciting qualitative approach. Drawing on the vast diversity of researchers' opinions on autoethnographic praxes, this book presents a cogent analysis of the ongoing debates in the field before moving on to the discussion of a new approach to both theorizing about and 'doing' autoethnography: a 'symbiotic autoethnography'. This approach synthesizes central aspects from the diversity of existing arguments into one adaptable 'framework' that combines key characteristic features of autoethnographic research. The author uses the concept of 'symbiosis' in its broader sense to denote close interdependence and interrelation between its suggested seven attributes, including temporality, researcher's omnipresence, evocative storytelling, interpretative analysis, political (transformative) focus, reflexivity and polyvocality. The book offers both experienced and novice researchers a theoretically informed multi-functional and multi-disciplinary methodological tool that can accommodate the dynamics of diverse personal experiences within a topography of specific professional, cultural and socio-political contexts.

Book Quantum Particle Illusion The Conceptual Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book Quantum Particle Illusion The Conceptual Quantum Mechanics written by Gerald E Marsh and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems with the conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics date back to attempts by Max Born, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, as well as many others in the 1920s to continue to employ the classical concept of a particle in the context of the quantum world. The experimental observations at the time and the assumption that the classical concept of a particle was to be preserved have led to an enormous literature on the foundations of quantum mechanics and a great deal of confusion then and now among non-physicists and students in any field that involves quantum theory. It is the historical approach to the teaching of quantum mechanics that is at the root of the problem.Spacetime is the arena within which quantum mechanical phenomena take place. For this reason, several Appendices are devoted to the nature of spacetime as well as to topics that can help us understand it such as vacuum fluctuations, the Unruh effect and Hawking radiation.Because of the success of quantum mechanical calculations, those who wish to understand the foundations of the theory are often given the apocryphal advice, 'just ignore the issue and calculate'. It is hoped that this book will help dispel some of the dismay, frustration, and confusion among those who refuse to take to heart this admonition.

Book excerpt: Just how real is reality, anyway? Forget everything you thought you knew about reality. The world is a seriously bizarre place. Things can exist in two places at once and travel backwards and forwards in time. Waves and particles are one and the same, and objects change their behavior according to whether they are being watched. This is not some alternative universe but the realm of the very small, where quantum mechanics rules. In this weird world of atoms and their constituents, our common sense understanding of reality breaks down - yet quantum mechanics has never failed an experimental test. What does it all mean? For all its weirdness, quantum mechanics has given us many practical technologies including lasers and the transistors that underlie computers and all digital technology. In the future, it promises computers more powerful than any built before, the ability to communicate with absolute privacy, and even quantum teleportation. The Quantum World explores the past, present and future of quantum science, its applications and mind-bending implications. Discover how ideas from quantum mechanics are percolating out into the vast scale of the cosmos - perhaps, in the future, to reveal a new understanding of the big bang and the nature of space and time. Book An Introduction To A Realistic Quantum Physics

Download or read book An Introduction To A Realistic Quantum Physics written by Giuliano Preparata and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-10-04 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a remarkable synthesis, a clear and simple introduction to Quantum Physics with a sort of Galilean dialogue on the supreme systems of contemporary Physics. The author, whose research interests and work extended from quarks to liquid systems and from crystals to stars, introduces the common conceptual and mathematical framework of all quantum theories, realistic enough to successfully confront Nature: Quantum Field Theory applied to the study of both dilute and condensed matter. In the dilute limit, quantum mechanics is shown to be a good approximation to Quantum Field Theory. However, in condensed matter physics the problem of the ground state, which acts as a kind of template for physical reality, is studied under the hypothesis that the standard perturbative vacuum is unstable with respect to a new coherent vacuum, whose spectrum emerges quite naturally through a simple variational procedure.

Download or read book The Quantum World written by J. C. Polkinghorne and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In paperback for the first time, this compact volume presents quantum mechanics for the general reader. It offers a lucid description of the intellectual challenges and disagreements in the study of the behavior of atomic and sub-atomic particles--a field that has completely changed our view of the physical world, but that is still the subject of unresolved debate about its own fundamental interpretation. The work is accessible to those with no background in higher mathematics, but will also interest readers who have a more specialized knowledge of scientific topics. The author has spent most of his working life as a theoretical elementary particle physicist and from 1968 to 1979 was Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge. In 1979 he resigned to train for the ministry of the Church of England, and he is now an ordained priest. Here he describes a theory that has been spectacularly successful in predicting the behavior of objects the size of atoms and smaller but that has aroused conflicting views about the nature of reality and the degree of independence between the world around us and ourselves as observers.

Book Quantum Physics is NOT Weird

Download or read book Quantum Physics is NOT Weird written by Paul J. van Leeuwen and published by Mijnbestseller.nl. This book was released on 2022-02-26 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Physics shows us that we create what we observe. Countless experiments confirm that it is our information which manifests reality. Matter and time are created by our observation. This is not only true when we do experiments in laboratories, but it works the same way in everyday reality. We manifest our own experiences. Science does not prove that our consciousness must be a product of our material brain. On the contrary. Consciousness emerging from the brain is just a belief. This book tells the story how physics did develop from a quest to understand nature into its current highly myopic materialistic paradigm. The profound spiritual message of Quantum Physics is ignored, to our detriment. "A wonderful, very readable book that will convince thousands upon thousands of serious readers, including students of science, why consciousness is necessary to understand quantum physics and why materialist science is not adequate. I give the book my highest recommendation." –– Amit Goswami, PhD, author of The Self-Aware Universe. "A monumental book. A masterpiece in disguise" - Prof Emer dr. Dirk K.F Meijer, University of Groningen.
