Book Industrial Development in Modern China

Download or read book Industrial Development in Modern China written by Guan Quan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the process of economic and industrial development in the Republic of China (1912-1949), in the hope of shedding light on how China came to be a comparative economic laggard in the period, especially in comparison to Japan. Backed up by extensive industrial statistical data gathered and rigorously analyzed by the author, this book stands out from previous research that has been limited to theoretical inferences and general judgments with scarce empirical evidence. So, far from being a purely historical review of China's industrial development, this book focuses on the internal logic of economic phenomena, especially the relationship among economic variables reflected in economic data, and it offers discussions within the framework of economic development theory. The author uses multivariate statistical analysis to draw comparisons between the industrial development of China and that of Japan, focusing on outbound investment and its importance for economic growth. This book will appeal to academics and general readers interested in the economic development and modern economic history of East Asia, as well as development economics and industrial and technological history.

Book Modernization Science

Download or read book Modernization Science written by Chuanqi He and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depending on their national level of income, development and modernization, all countries in the world can be generally categorized as either advanced or developing. Studies on why advanced countries continue to develop, how they maintain their level of development, and how developing countries enter into the advanced club fall into the field of “modernization science,” which is an emerging interdisciplinary science. This monograph, the first English book available on “modernization science,” interprets its concepts, methodologies, general theories, first and second modernization, six level-specific, six field-specific and three sector-specific modernizations, modernization policy and evaluation, and the principles and methods of national development since the 18th century. It provides clear, systematic, up-to-date information on this new discipline with more than 173 figures and 265 tables, and covers 131 countries and 97% of the global population. A comprehensive outlook on world modernization is presented from a Chinese perspective.

Book Development Discourse Modernization Theory and Gender

Download or read book Development Discourse Modernization Theory and Gender written by Wilson Chege and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Relationships and Family, , language: English, abstract: The contemporary world has experienced a focus on development as a core influence on social, economic, and political spheres. Equating the preoccupation with development to a discourse, Escobar (86-91) notes the interpretation of societal development as a technical problem requiring rational decisionmaking and management entrusted to a group of people. How such people conceptualize development has an impact on various groups in society. In this case, a male-dominated outlook on development poses various effects on women, explorable through exploring the various theoretical foundations on development (Lindio- MacGovern and Isidor 35). Several important theories conceptualized over the past half a century form the main ideas surrounding development, one of which is the modernization theory. Through taking the perspective of gendered development in which development affects men and women differently, the present study analyzes impacts of development based on the modernization theory and global capitalism on women. The study relies on scholarly works covering development, gendered development, modernization theory, and global capitalism. The approach to the discussion entails an overview of development and modernization theory with a focus on the first world-third world divide. This discussion of development frameworks then ushers in an analysis of how such development impacts women. The main theme under investigation is gendered development dwelling on the fate of women, with the central argument being that development and paradigmatic development theories create opportunities and hindrances for the development of women. Book Urbanization in Africa in Relation to Socio economic Development

Download or read book Urbanization in Africa in Relation to Socio economic Development written by Christian Tettey and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Developing countries are fast urbanizing and those in Africa are among the fastest when compared to Asia and Latin America. The process of urbanization is believed to be connected with levels of development and some assert that, for a country to develop, there is the need for an increased level of industrialization because according to the modernization school of thought, there cannot be urbanization without economic growth. The developed countries passed through this process and according to this approach, developing countries must do the same. This situation, however, is believed to be different in the developing countries in general and in Africa in particular. Modernization theory of urbanization does not apply to developing countries which have not attained the economic growth of the developed countries before reaching high levels of urbanization. This then raises the question about how developing countries, to which all African countries belong, become urbanized and still continue to urbanize. In other words, is modernization theory of urbanization applicable to African urbanization? A standard measure, urbanization index, was developed for measuring urbanization in Africa since the traditional measure for urbanization depends on what each country defines as urban. This was then compared with the traditional measure of urbanization to note any differences in the prediction ability of urbanization in Africa. It was found that social indicators of development tend to predict urbanization more than the traditional economic variables on which modernization theory is based. Also, socioeconomic development variables tend to predict urbanization index more precisely than degree of urbanization, which is the traditional measure for urbanization. Though the applicability of modernization theory is validated for urbanization in Africa, modification is recommended for the theory."--Abstract.

The policies of government to manage greenhouse gas emissions will require business to change its product and service delivery arrangements, which in turn means labour requirements will also change. The book also considers whether labour market issues should be explicit in the theoretical framework of ecological modernisation as it guides the policy development process.

Book excerpt: After a period of relative confidence about the future of modernizing societies, scholars are now questioning with renewed urgency the directions of the modernization trend. This book, the result of nearly a decade of collaborative efforts by scholars in twelve countries, examines the modernization process with particular attention to how it is affected by cultural-and especially socioeconomic-variables. The authors describe major theoretical approaches to the idea of modernity and point to the sociological issues interlinked with modernization. They also consider specific factors such as nationalism, ethnicity, and traditional institutions and show how they can determine differing modernization trajectories. The concluding section of the book focuses on nation- and culture-specific examples of modernization, presenting case studies that illustrate the range of modernization attempts. The authors also explore the extent to which modernization may in fact be a generalization of the American way of life.
