Book excerpt: De par ses caractéristiques géographiques, topographiques et démographiques, la ville de Mexico constitue un site privilégié pour l'apparition d'épisodes intenses de pollution photooxydante. Les principaux polluants primaires, précurseurs de ce type de pollution, que sont les composés organiques volatils (cov) et les oxydes d'azote (no#x), proviennent en majorité de la circulation automobile, inévitablement très intense dans cette agglomération peuplée par dix-huit millions d'habitants. L'élaboration d'une stratégie de réduction de l'ozone, réalisée à partir de l'utilisation d'un modèle mathématique physicochimique, nécessite la connaissance la plus précise possible des quantités de polluants émis dans les différentes zones de la ville, ainsi que la nature des cov impliqués dans les processus de formation des photooxydants en général. Nos travaux ont consisté, dans un premier temps, en la mise au point d'un logiciel original de quantification des émissions de cov, no#x et co d'origine automobile, applicable à chaque kilomètre carré de la ville de Mexico, et pour chaque heure de la journée. Dans un deuxième temps, la réalisation d'une campagne de mesures sur le terrain a permis l'identification des principaux cov (hydrocarbures + composes carbonyles) présents dans l'atmosphère de Mexico, à partir de l'étude de trois sites différents répartis du nord au sud de la ville. Les résultats des prélèvements, effectués sur cartouches, ont été comparés à ceux provenant de mesures parallèles, réalisées par l'institut mexicain du pétrole à partir d'un échantillonnage des cov sur canisters. La mesure de l'irradiation solaire uv a permis de calculer les constantes de vitesse des réactions photochimiques inclues dans le modèle de simulation numérique. Une fois le modèle validé, le trace de diagrammes isopleths a permis de montrer qu'une stratégie efficace de réduction de l'ozone à Mexico devrait être basée sur une diminution des émissions de cov, dont principalement les xylènes ou le formaldéhyde, présents en forte concentration à Mexico et qui constituent les composés les plus réactifs vis-à-vis de la formation de l'ozone troposphérique.

Une étude précédemment menée, portant sur l'introduction de la spéciation moléculaire détaillée des COV et l'utilisation du mécanisme CBIV n'a pas donné de résultats concluants quant à l'impact de cette spéciation sur la formation d'ozone. Nous souhaitions par l'introduction d'un nouveau mécanisme avoir une prise en compte meilleure de l'ensemble de ces composés et voir ainsi leur contribution éventuelle sur la formation d'ozone sur notre domaine. Ceci nécessitait une adaptation du modèle et notamment l'installation d'un module (interface FCM = Flexible Chemical Mecanism) permettant l'introduction d'un nouveau mécanisme chimique (SAPRC 99 au lieu du CBIV) au sein même du modèle. L'ensemble des fichiers d'entrées a été adapté pour la prise en compte de la totalité des composants. L'influence de la spéciation des COV sur la formation d'ozone sur un épisode de simulation a été ensuite étudiée avec une augmentation de la concentration d'ozone calculée aux stations et un pourcentage moyen d'écart sur la formation d'ozone de l'ordre de 28% par rapport aux calculs avec le précédent mécanisme.

Book excerpt: This reports on the collection and preparation of data (costs and air quality improvement) for the strategic evaluation portion of the Mexico City Air Quality Research Initiative (MARI). Reports written for the Mexico City government by various international organizations were used to identify proposed options along with estimates of cost and emission reductions. Information from appropriate options identified by SCAQMD for Southem California were also used in the analysis. A linear optimization method was used to select a group of options or a strategy to be evaluated by decision analysis. However, the reduction of ozone levels is not a linear function of the reduction of hydrocarbon and NO(subscript x) emissions. Therefore, a more detailed analysis was required for ozone. An equation for a plane on an isopleth calculated with a trajectory model was obtained using two endpoints that bracket the expected total ozone precursor reductions plus the starting concentrations for hydrocarbons and NO(subscript x). The relationship between ozone levels and the hydrocarbon and NO(subscript x) concentrations was assumed to lie on this plane. This relationship was used in the linear optimization program to select the options comprising a strategy.

Book excerpt: La pollution d'origine automobile pose un problème important, mais quand on cherche à savoir quelle est la réalité entre pollution et dommages, on doit nécessairement faire face à des approximations car la multiplicité des variables explicatives est trop grande. Plus que les résultats précis peu fiables, ce sont les tendances des évolutions qui importent : elles apportent une contribution à l'appréciation économique des solutions possibles pour limiter les dommages futurs de la pollution atmosphérique. Cette thèse s'est donc fixée comme principal objectif de mettre à jour ces tendances de long terme. La modélisation des émissions automobiles en France de 1990 à 2010 nous permet d'estimer ce que la pollution automobile va peser dans quinze ans en pourcentage de la pollution d'aujourd'hui. Cette modélisation a été réalisée à partir d'un outil simple et facile d'utilisation, qui permet en outre de tester un jeu d'hypothèses. Divers facteurs interviennent en effet pour déterminer les émissions automobiles : le stock et le flux de véhicules (immatriculations et mises à la casse), la structure du parc, les déplacements realisés et leur répartition entre ville et routes, les émissions unitaires. A partir de ce modèle de prévision, nous avons bâti un scénario de référence, en choisissant, parmi l'ensemble des trajectoires possibles, celles qui nous paraissent, au regard de notre connaissance à un instant donné, les plus raisonnables. Alors que le parc automobile augmente les tendances générales de la pollution automobile s'inscrivent à la baisse, exception faite des émissions de particules. Nous avons ensuite tenté d'évaluer le poids de la réglementation européenne en matière d'émissions unitaires des automobiles dans cette évolution. Puis nous avons évalué l'impact du taux de diésélisation des immatriculations neuves ainsi que le poids de la structure du parc et de ses déplacements sur le niveau des émissions des différents effluents pour mieux comprendre ces évolutions.
