Book excerpt: Exploring the relationships between the quality of school life for students, approaches to learning and achievement outcomes has the potential to enhance our understanding of school learning processes. Using longitudinal data gathered over four years from a sample of 1200 students in 22 schools, this paper provides evidence of an association between favourable views of the quality of school life, the adoption of deep approaches to learning and achievement growth over the final two years of secondary school. These patterns of association are interpreted in terms of student engagement in learning and in the life of the school. In addition to examining these patterns at the level of the individual student the paper also explores whether the association applies at school level.
