Book Herbal Medicinal Products

Download or read book Herbal Medicinal Products written by Frauke Gaedcke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbal medicinal products are becoming more widely accepted as alternatives to medical prescriptions. Many physicians believe that herbal medicinal products are able to beneficially complement or even replace chemical medicines. Recognizing this, European institutions are pushing the harmonization of assessment criteria for herbal medicinal products. However, this kind of reevaluation of herbal medicinal products is combined with increased expectations of physicians, pharmacists, and patients with regard to quality, safety and efficacy. There are often uncertainties about the interpretation of basic terms related to the manufacture and quality of herbal medicinal products. Herbal Medicinal Products clarifies these uncertainties, increasing transparency in the herbal medicinal products market and supporting an adequate scientific discussion related to herbal medicinal products. It offers a complete survey on current scientific knowledge, as well as on legal basic requirements for the development, standardization, and licensing of herbal medicinal products.

Book WHO Guidelines on Good Agricultural and Collection Practices GACP for Medicinal Plants

Download or read book WHO Guidelines on Good Agricultural and Collection Practices GACP for Medicinal Plants written by Organización Mundial de la Salud and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal plant materials are supplied through collection from wild populations and cultivation. Under the overall context of quality assurance and control of herbal medicines WHO developed the Guidelines on good agricultural and collection practices (GACP) for medicinal plants providing general technical guidance on obtaining medicinal plant materials of good quality for the sustainable production of herbal products classified as medicines. These guidelines are also related to WHO's work on the protection of medicinal plants aiming promotion of sustainable use and cultivation of medicinal plants. The main objectives of these guidelines are to: (1) contribute to the quality assurance of medicinal plant materials used as the source for herbal medicines to improve the quality safety and efficacy of finished herbal products; (2) guide the formulation of national and/or regional GACP guidelines and GACP monographs for medicinal plants and related standard operating procedures; and (3) encourage and support the sustainable cultivation and collection of medicinal plants of good quality in ways that respect and support the conservation of medicinal plants and the environment in general. These guidelines concern the cultivation and collection of medicinal plants and include certain post-harvest operations. Good agricultural and collection practices for medicinal plants are the first step in quality assurance on which the safety and efficacy of herbal medicinal products directly depend. These practices also play an important role in protection natural resources of medicinal plants for sustainable use.

Book Phytopharmacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah E. Edwards
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2015-02-17
  • ISBN : 1118543459
  • Pages : 438 pages

Download or read book Phytopharmacy written by Sarah E. Edwards and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists and nurses, are often confronted with patients who use over-the-counter (OTC) herbal medicinal products and food supplements. While taking responsibility for one’s own health and treatment options is encouraged, many patients use these products based on limited (and sometimes inaccurate) information from non-scientific sources, such as the popular press and internet. There is a clear need to offer balanced, well-informed advice to patients, yet a number of studies have shown that, generally, conventionally trained health practitioners consider their knowledge about herbal medicinal products and supplements to be weak. Phytopharmacy fills this knowledge gap, and is intended for use by the busy pharmacist, nurse, or doctor, as well as the ‘expert patient’ and students of pharmacy and herbal medicine. It presents clear, practical and concise monographs on over a hundred popular herbal medicines and plant-based food supplements. Information provided in each monograph includes: • Indications • Summary and appraisal of clinical and pre-clinical evidence • Potential interactions • Contraindications • Possible adverse effects An overview of the current regulatory framework is also outlined, notably the EU Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive. This stipulates that only licensed products or registered traditional herbal medicinal products (THRs), which have assured quality and safety, can now legally be sold OTC. Monographs are included of most of the major herbal ingredients found in THRs, and also some plant-based food supplements, which while not strictly medicines, may also have the potential to exert a physiological effect.

Book Herbal Drugs for the Management of Infectious Diseases

Download or read book Herbal Drugs for the Management of Infectious Diseases written by Inderbir Singh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbal Drug for the Management of Infectious Diseases The book is a comprehensive compilation of herbal drug applications for the treatment and management of infectious diseases and addresses issues related to development, challenges, and future prospects associated with the use of herbal medicine. The use of herbal medicines has evolved in various cultures around the world over many millennia. In many developing Asian and African countries, the use of herbal medicines, as supplied by traditional medicinal practitioners, has always been popular. In the last two to three decades, many people in developed countries have begun to turn to alternative or complementary therapies, including the use of herbal medicines, nutraceuticals, functional foods, and other supplements. This resurgence in interest in plant-derived medicines is partly due to the growing dissatisfaction with allopathic medicines, as well as the perception that plant-derived medicines are natural and therefore pure and without side effects, and the progress in the production of higher quality herbal medicines including some with proven clinical efficacy and safety. Infectious diseases are generally caused by pathogenic microorganisms, like bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi, and are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Therefore, the 16 chapters of this book have been intentionally sequenced to cover the therapeutic potential and applications of herbal extracts and phytochemicals for the management of various infectious diseases. Disease pathophysiology, an overview of current medication or treatment, in-vitro and in-vivo evaluations of relevant biological activities of herbal extracts and phytochemicals, mechanisms of action, clinical trials, and novel technologies for the delivery of herbal bioactive compounds as well as patents have also been included. Audience Chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, biologists, herbal/Ayurvedic/medicinal practitioners, as well all those in the medical sciences working on medicinal plants and infectious diseases.
