Download or read book Quality Assessment for Structural Lumber from Mountain Pine Beetle Attacked Timber written by Phil Trott and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective of this study was to supplement through data analysis the development of a quality assessment protocol for post-mountain pine beetle (MPB) wood that is consistent with standard North American procedures for testing and evaluating commercial structural lumber. The specific data analysis objectives were to determine the usefulness and limitations of existing data collected in past pan-Canadian cross sectional studies and how they may be used to assist in developing regional longitudinal programs. The second objective was to extract existing data on MPB-relevant characteristics from industry databases relevant to their frequency, and severity relative to grade rules. The techniques developed in this analysis are expected to form part of the evaluation framework of the quality assessment protocol.--Document.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to develop a protocol for evaluating and responding to potential strength-reducing characteristics that develop in lumber from stands following a regional catastrophic event. This new protocol is intended to be distinct from the standardized lumber testing programs that are in place to support the development of structural design values. Under this two-year project, a general protocol has been drafted and a limited pilot study was undertaken to demonstrate its efficacy by using shake in post mountain pine beetle (MPB)-killed lodgepole pine lumber as an example. This protocol provides guidance on the identification of suitable characteristics for study, the design of an exploratory survey for assessing frequency of appearance, the approach for collecting samples for strength testing, the analysis of the test results, and, if necessary, the development of supplementary grading rules to respond to possible impacts to the lumber strength from these characteristics.--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle epidemic. This document reports on a project conducted to determine the impact of using mountain pine beetle (MPB)-attacked wood on plywood manufacturing processes and to implement the optimum processing parameters in mill production in order to increase value recovery and productivity. The specific objectives of the project were to investigate and quantify the effect of beetle-wood veneer on veneer visual and stress grading; the efffect of beetle-wood veneer on gluing, panel lay-up and gluebond performance; the effect of beetle-wood veneer on the plywood hot pressing process and resulting panel quality, stiffness, and strength; and the costs and benefits of adjusting manufacturing processes in a mill trial that transfers the technology.--Includes text from document.

Book excerpt: Bark Beetles: Biology and Ecology of Native and Invasive Species provides a thorough discussion of these economically important pests of coniferous and broadleaf trees and their importance in agriculture. It is the first book in the market solely dedicated to this important group of insects, and contains 15 chapters on natural history and ecology, morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetics, evolution and diversity, population dynamics, resistance, symbiotic associations, natural enemies, climate change, management strategies, economics, and politics, with some chapters exclusively devoted to some of the most economically important bark beetle genera, including Dendroctonus, Ips, Tomicus, Hypothenemus, and Scolytus. This text is ideal for entomology and forestry courses, and is aimed at scientists, faculty members, forest managers, practitioners of biological control of insect pests, mycologists interested in bark beetle-fungal associations, and students in the disciplines of entomology, ecology, and forestry. - Provides the only synthesis of the literature on bark beetles - Features chapters exclusively devoted to some of the most economically important bark beetle genera, such as Dendroctonus, Ips, Tomicus, Hypothenemus, and Scolytus - Includes copious color illustrations and photographs that further enhance the content

Download or read book Advances in Threat Assessment and Their Application to Forest and Rangeland Management written by John M. Pye and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2006, more than 170 researchers and managers from the United States, Canada, and Mexico convened in Boulder, Colorado, to discuss the state of the science in environmental threat assessment. This two-volume general technical report compiles peer-reviewed papers that were among those presented during the 3-day conference. Papers are organized by four broad topical sections--Land, Air and Water, Fire, and Pests/Biota--and are divided into syntheses and case studies. Land topics include discussions of forest land conversion and soil quality as well as investigations of species' responses to climate change. Air and water topics include discussions of forest vulnerability to severe weather and storm damage modeling. Fire topics include discussions of wildland arson and wildfire risk management as well as how people precieve wildfire risk and uncertainty. Pests/biota topics include discussions of risk mapping and probabilistic risk assessments as well as investigations of individual threats, including the southern pine beetle and Phytophora alni. Ultimately, this publication will foster exchange and collaboration between those who develop knowledge and tools for threat assessment and those who are responsible for managing forests and rangelands.
