Book The Effects of Phosphorus and Nitrogen Fertilization on Tall Fescue Nutrient Content Yield and Baleage Quality

Download or read book The Effects of Phosphorus and Nitrogen Fertilization on Tall Fescue Nutrient Content Yield and Baleage Quality written by Cheyenne A. Arthur and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is a cool season perennial grass commonly used in year-round forage production systems. Producers often wrap large round bales of tall fescue in plastic. The fermented product of this practice, termed baleage, allows the forage to be stored for later feeding. During periods of rapid growth in the spring and the fall, the nutrient content of tall fescue can be imbalanced and cause nutritional disorders in grazing animals. To improve the nutrition of tall fescue, it is known that fertilization of phosphorus (P) can help improve leaf nutrient content of P, magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca). Additionally, nitrogen (N) fertilization is known to improve forage quality. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of both N and P spring fertilization on tall fescue nutrient content and yield, as well as the effects of these treatments on baleage quality from these pastures. A 2014-2015 field study utilized eight different two-acre pastures, each with a P rate of 0, 25, 50, or 100 lbs P/A and a N rate of 0 or 50 lbs N/A. These studies found that N and P fertilizer did not affect yield and did not change tall fescue leaf calcium or magnesium content; however leaf P was increased with P fertilization. N treatments increased baleage protein content in the 2014-2015 study, but other quality measures were not affected by N and P treatments. The 2015-2016 field study using only P treatments and more replicates will be completed and replicated an additional year to further elucidate effects of P fertilization on tall fescue baleage.

Book Plant and Animal Performance in Tall Fescue and Tall Fescue Legume Pastures

Download or read book Plant and Animal Performance in Tall Fescue and Tall Fescue Legume Pastures written by Troy J. Bingham and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tall fescue is the one of most common grasses in irrigated pastures throughout the Intermountain West. Two limitations of tall fescue are a decrease in productivity during hot summer months and the need for supplemental nitrogen (N). The objective of this research was to compare tall fescue-alfalfa (TF+ALF), tall fescue-birdsfoot trefoil (TF+BFT), tall fescue-nitrogen fertilizer (TF+N), and tall fescue without nitrogen fertilizer (TF-N) on forage yield, nutritional quality, and livestock performance. Research plots were established at the Utah State University Pasture Research Facility in Lewiston, UT in 2010 and grazed in 2012 and 2013. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications and divided into four paddocks per replication. Three Angus crossbred steers with an average starting weight of 380 kg were placed on each treatment and rotated to a new paddock every 7 days. A put-and-take method was used throughout the growing season such that each paddock received 80% utilization. Four forage samples were collected from each paddock just prior to grazing using a 0.5 m2 quadrat for determination of dry matter (DM) and nutrient content. ADF, NDF, IVTD, and TDN were used to estimate nutrient content and steers were weighed every 28 days to determine livestock performance. Forage yield was highest (P

Book Growth and Forage Quality of Tall Fescue Festuca Arundinacea Schreb and Perennial Ryegrass Lolium Perenne L as Affected by Mefluidide

Download or read book Growth and Forage Quality of Tall Fescue Festuca Arundinacea Schreb and Perennial Ryegrass Lolium Perenne L as Affected by Mefluidide written by Sabam Oloan Manurung and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field study with 5 tall fescue genotypes treated at the vegetative growth stage, with 0, 0.28, 0.56, and 0.84 kg/ha of mefluidide was initiated in July, 1980. The regrowth of these plants were again treated at the booting growth stage in April, 1981, with the same rates of mefluidide as in the first experiment. In addition, three rates of mefluidide (0, 0.28, and 0.56 kg/ha) were applied at the floral initiation stage of perennial ryegrass cv. Linn in March, 1981. Four varieties of tall fescue were transplanted from the field into 6-inch pots in February, 1981, and grown under 50/60°F and 70/80°F night/day temperature regimes in growth chambers. Mefluidide at the rate of 0, 0.28, and 0.56 kg/ha were applied at the pre-floral or at floral initiation growth stage. The same varieties were again transplanted from the field into 6-inch pots in April, 1981, and grown under the same temperature regimes and treated at pre-booting or at booting growth stage with the same rate of mefluidide as those in the first growth chamber experiment. Mefluidide interacted with tall fescue genotypes and also resulted in a reduction in dry matter yield, ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber) and increased CP (Crude Protein) content in both tall fescue trials in the field. The WSC (Water Soluble Carbohydrate) concentration was reduced by mefluidide applied at the vegetative growth stage in the first experiment, but it was increased at the booting growth stage application of mefludide on regrowth of these plants. Late applications of mefluidide did maintain forage quality of tall fescue with some elimination of dry matter yield reduction caused by earlier application. In perennial ryegrass cv. Linn, mefluidide reduced stem dry matter production, but did not affect leaf dry matter yield. This was accompanied by high leaf/stem ratios and retardation of plant height. Fertile tiller production was inhibited, accompanied by reduction in ADF, increased stem CP and increased WSC of leaf and stem tissue. Under the 70/80°F night/day temperature regime, all varieties produced a higher dry matter yield than plants under a 50/60°F night/ day temperature regime. However, WSC content of leaf and stem were higher in the low temperature regime. There were indications that mefluidide reduced ADF and WSC content of leaf and stem tissues, but increased leaf and stem CP under both temperature regimes in both experiments. This was accompanied by high leaf/stem ratios of treated plants.

Book Plant Rhizobia Symbiosis and Nitrogen Fixation in Legumes

Download or read book Plant Rhizobia Symbiosis and Nitrogen Fixation in Legumes written by and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reciprocal exchange of chemical signals between legume and rhizobium leads to the establishment of Root Nodule Symbiosis (RNS). The discoveries of the Nodulation Factor (NF) and nod genes, along with the discoveries of the relevant genetic plant factors, have expanded our understanding of how legume-rhizobial interactions constitute a successful mutualistic symbiosis. Symbiotic nodule formation can be divided into the following molecular events: (i) the reciprocal exchange of signals; (ii) epidermal recognition of symbiotic partner and infection thread formation; (iii) nodule organogenesis; (iv) the establishment of a microaerophilic environment to provide nitrogenase the ideal condition to work; and, (v) modulation of immunity to host rhizobium inside the nodule cells. The number of nodules in a plant is maintained via a process of systemic signaling, known as ‘autoregulation of nodulation’ (AON), that acts as a negative signal to control nodule number in low nitrogen conditions and inhibit nodule initiation in an optimally nitrogen-fed plant. Over 200 plant genes have been discovered up to now and these discoveries have given us a broad understanding of RNS.
