En esta obra excepcional se recogen esas reflexiones pero no sólo en los planos testimonial, histórico, literario o ensayístico, sino también en el filosófico. Heidegger explicaba, al final de su vida, que lo que en verdad se cuestionaba en la pregunta que interrogaba por el sentido de la filosofía, era la existencia misma de la tradición europeo-occidental. En este sentido, la filosofía por la que se aboga en este libro ya no es la moderna sino una filosofía transmoderna, que no parta de la tradición de Occidente sino de lo que ésta siempre ha negado y excluido.
