Education for Democratic Intercultural Citizenship (EDIC) is very relevant in contemporary societies. All citizens, but in particular teachers, curriculum developers, educational policy makers, and educational professionals in civil society (NGOs) have a crucial role in this. Seven European universities are working together in developing a curriculum to prepare their students for this important academic, societal and political task. As part of an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership they each develop a module in the area of moral, intercultural and citizenship education. All modules are international and inquiry oriented, and make links with society. In this book the leading scholars write the theoretical background of their module, their curriculum guidelines and goals, the concrete programmes, and the experiences of students. The universities had an annual intensive programme in which students and teachers of all universities came together to have try-outs of parts of the modules. These programmes contributed strongly to the network building of researchers, teachers and students. The activities have given a strong stimulus to the implementation of Education for Democratic Intercultural Citizenship in the participating universities and in educational organisations worldwide. The experiences show both the necessity and the relevance of this topic and this kind of collaboration.

The contributions analyze a wide variety of topics related to the manner in which ideological and epistemological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries are reflected in, and shape, Spanish language, literature, and other cultural expressions in both Spain and Latin America. The 19th century was conducive to various movements of independence, while, in Europe, radical changes of different types and in all contexts of life and knowledge occurred. Language was certainly affected by these changes resulting in new terminology and discourse strategies. Likewise, new schools of thought such as idealism, dialectic materialism, nihilism, and nationalism, among others, were established, in addition to new literary movements such as romanticism, evocative of (r)evolution, individualism and realism, inspired by the social effects of capitalism. Scientific and technological advances continued throughout the 20th century, when the women’s liberation movement consolidated. The notion of globalization also appears, simultaneously to various crises, despotism, wars, genocide, social exclusion and unemployment. Together, these trends give rise to a vindicating discourse that reaches large audiences via television. The classic rhetoric undergoes some changes given the explicit suasion and the absence of delusion provided by other means of communication. The 21st century is defined by the flood of information and the overpowering presence of mass communication; so much so, that the technological impact is clear in all realms of life. From the linguistic viewpoint, the appearance of anglicisms and technicalities mirrors the impact of post-modernity. There is now a need to give coherence to a national discourse that both grasps the past and adapts itself to the new available resources with the purpose of conveying an effective and attractive message to a very large audience. Discourse is swift, since society does not seem to have time to think, but instead seeks to maintain interest in a world filled with stimuli that, in turn, change constantly. Emphasis has been switched to a search for historical images and moments that presumably explain present and future events. It is also significant that all this restlessness is discussed and explained via new means such as the world-wide-web. The change in communication habits (e-mail, chats, forums, SMS) and tools (computers, mobile phones) that was initiated in the 20th century has had a net effect on the directness and swiftness of language.

Así, este libro es una reafirmación de nuestra fe, expresada de una manera muy sencilla y sin ninguna complicación. Este libro es también un recordatorio para nosotros amar a nuestra Iglesia y defenderla a pesar de que haya muchas cosas que nos puedan provocar desencanto. No debemos desanimarnos; al contrario, debemos estar felices de saber el camino que conduce a la paz y a la salvación. La Iglesia se inició con la traición de Judas, que contribuyó a la cruz de Jesús. Este tipo de hechos seguirán estando presentes en nuestra Iglesia, en nuestras comunidades, e incluso en el comportamiento de nuestros líderes. Pero, si Dios está con nosotros, ¿quién puede estar contra nosotros? Jesús nos ha marcado el camino que debemos seguir si queremos estar con Dios nuestro Padre. Piensan que pueden escoger y elegir lo que quieran y como quieran. Sin embargo, es importante entender que la Iglesia no es, y nunca ha sido, una democracia. La Iglesia es jerárquica y encuentra su fundamento en la autoridad que el Señor Jesús recibió del Padre. Con esa autoridad, Él dijo a Pedro: " Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia, y el poder del infierno no la derrotará".
