L'auteur est alors en mesure de relier le projet éthique et la recherche du bonheur, analyse confirmée par l'étude de la revendication eudémoniste au XXe siècle. Les tâches spécifiques et philosophiques de l'éthique (renversement des perspectives, définition d'un idéal immanent, nouvelle conception du sujet) sont définies. A partir de cette réflexion générale, s'esquisse une éthique concrète comme éthique de la joie. La reconstruction de soi et la renaissance, la réciprocité et la transmutation des relations, la jouissance esthétique et la jouissance concrète réfléchie, la création conceptuelle ou pratique, forment les constituants de la libre joie que l'éthique se propose d'instaurer. Autre façon de manifester son caractère concret, cette éthique peut donner source à des applications dans l'ordre de la médecine (par une meilleure définition de ce qu'on appelle à tort " éthique médicale ") et celui de la politique (par une clarification des enjeux existentiels de la démocratie, toujours liés à l'idée de la vraie vie, c'est-à-dire du bonheur). Le but ultime de cette éthique reste bien évidemment l'accès à la jouissance d'être, c'est-à-dire à la jouissance personnelle du fait même d'exister et de vivre par soi-même dans la joie, en relation avec autrui.

From such a perspective, the duty of individuals no longer consists of protecting themselves from society, but of defending it, taking care of a social fabric outside of which no identity can be formed.
