Currently, most of QoS techniques utilize service measurements that are collected by the network elements to evaluate the network performance. However, this process does not take into account the service performance from the clients perspective and might contradict with the Service Level Agreement. In order to overcome the limitations of service side QoS monitoring, a number of research studies have been conducted to present alternative architectures and algorithms for client side QoS service assessment in computer networks. The client side QoS approach gives the major role to the clients to evaluate the dedicated services through gathering the network measurements and reporting the necessary information. The service providers consider clients feedback to revise and resolve service performance issues. This model can be considered as a cooperative approach that provides a compromised service plan for both the service providers and the network clients to achieve a better network service performance. In this research, we study the tradeoffs between network side and client side QoS monitoring and present a client based architecture for the evaluation and prediction of service degradations in mobile networks. The client side approach should be capable of utilizing multi level service performance analysis in a scalable mobile network environment. The service performance analysis consists of three levels: service monitoring and evaluation, verifying and enhancing the network measurement accuracy, and performance prediction in single and multi hops networks. In addition, this approach should support short and long term service evaluation scenarios. The short term scenario gives the ability to service providers to react in a timely manner to the clients feedback to preserve a certain level of service performance. The long term scenario helps to clarify the service behavior by predicting the service degradation over the monitoring and evaluation sessions. Furthermore, this scenario allows the service providers to refine the degraded services and maintain the SLA.

Besides established infrastructurebased wireless networks (cellular, WLAN, sat- lite) ad-hoc wireless networks emerge as a new platform for distributed applications and for personal communication in scenarios where deploying infrastructure is not feasible. In ad-hoc wireless networks, each node is capable of forwarding packets on behalf of other nodes, so that multi-hop paths provide end-to-end connectivity. The increased flexibility and mobility of ad-hoc wireless networks are favored for appli- tions in law enforcement, homeland defense and military. In a world where wireless networks become increasingly interoperable with each other and with the high-speed wired Internet, personal communication systems will transform into universal terminals with instant access to variate content and able of handle demanding tasks, such as multimedia and real-time video. With users roaming between networks, and with wide variation in wireless link quality even in a single domain, the communications terminal must continue to provide a level of Quality of Service that is acceptable to the user and conforms to a contracted Service Level Agreement.

In addressing Quality of Service (QoS), it introduces the notion of delay not exceeding an upper limit, termed the bounded delay, to measure the Quality of Service in VoIP networks. Queuing models are introduced to measure performance in terms of bounded delays. Closed form solutions relating the impact of bounding delays on throughput of VoIP traffic are provided. Traffic that exceeds the delay threshold is treated as lost throughput. The results addressed can be used in scaling resources in a VoIP network for different thresholds of acceptable delays. Both single and multiple switching points are addressed. The same notion and analysis are also applied on jitter, another important indicator of the VoIP QoS This book also develops a pricing model based on the Quality of Service provided in VoIP networks. It presents the impact of quality of VoIP service demanded by the customer on the transmission resources required by the network using an analytical approach. In addition, it extends and applies the delay throughput analysis developed for VoIP networks in assessing the impact of risks constituted by a number of transportation channels, where the risk associated with each channel can be quantified by a known distribution.
