Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have secured a role in many emerging applications spanning environmental, ecological, industrial, and commercial domains in which data are periodically sourced from sensors and used in monitoring and control. The ubiquity of network-based video streaming, largely in the form of monitoring equipment installed in administrative domains (cities, campuses, offices, highway systems) has been possible by increases in capability of low-cost cameras and computational devices. However the streaming of video data over wireless sensor networks has the nature of heavy data transmission load, relatively long data transmission period, severe inter- and intra-path interference, and unbalanced network energy consumption under severe energy constraints. These characteristics make it very difficult to achieve meaningful throughput performance for video data delivery over WSN. In this dissertation we focus on the development of practical throughput aware video data routing techniques optimized to data delivery cost to address the challenge of QoS support in end-to-end throughput achievement for bandwidth demanding video delivery in a large-scale, battery-operated sensor network. We utilize video data streaming throughput as the main metric to quantify the video delivery performance. We present a benchmark data routing algorithm to assure the throughput performance (QoS) of a data path via eliminating the impact of inter-path interference through path isolation. Extending the benchmark algorithm, we develop an interference-tolerant data routing algorithm to improve the general data egress rate of the entire network with some tolerant sacrifices of the throughput performance on each stream. The routing algorithms construct throughput-guaranteed end-to-end video delivery data paths based on accurate video delivery performance estimation. We present two analytical models in conjunction with simple proactive admission and congestion control strategies to enable accurate end-to-end data delivery throughput estimation with considerations of data stream's transmission rate, location, and relative positions. Simulations demonstrate that our estimation models are highly consistent with the measurement of the real data transmission scenario and our proposed data delivery scheme adapts to the optimal data rate about three times faster than a traditional CTS/RTS scheme without generating any jitter as observed in CTS/RTS. In addition, we exploit the option of deploying mobile base stations to support improved video delivery QoS. The proposed mobile base station deployment strategy improves the video delivery performances with the best effort to minimize the data delivery cost. As a complementary solution for the deployment of our routing scheme over WSNs, we develop a new code dissemination framework for generic WSN applications. Simulation and prototype implementation illustrate that our framework is almost five times faster for application code dissemination than traditional over the air programming strategy. Another contribution of this dissertation is the constellation graph of routing algorithms. It presents a clear way of selecting the most appropriate routing algorithm for a specific WSN application.

Book Flow Aware Admission Control Protocol for QoS Provisioning in MANETs

Download or read book Flow Aware Admission Control Protocol for QoS Provisioning in MANETs written by Muhammad Asif and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs), mobile nodes communicate over an error prone wireless channel without any centralized control. MANETs have n9 fixed topology because mobile nodes can freely join or leave the network at any time. As a consequence, it is difficult to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) in these networks. The current routing , protocols provide only best effort services to the applications. Multimedia communications become very popular and require various types of QoS guarantee from the network such as guranteed throughput, bounded end-to-end delay. The QoS-aware routing (QA) and Admission Control (AC) protocols try to address the issue of QoS to some extent. In this work, a novel Flow Aware Admission Control (FAAC) protocol is designed to assure the guaranteed throughput to data sessions. It utilizes the route cache of routing protocol and devises a new admission technique to accept or reject data session to the network. It is partially coupled with the Oynamic Source Routing (OSR) protocol as it has used the basic functionality of route search of the OSR protocol. The protocol has two phases: (i) route discovery and (ii) test the route nodes resources for a data session entry. The performance evaluations show that the protocol outperforms the existing best effort routing and QAR and AC protocols such as OSR and Contention Aware Admission Control (CACP) protocols in providing QoS in MANETs. Mobility is a big challenge to assure guaranteed throughput to data sessions. To address this issue, we have designed F AAC-Multipath protocol that uses multiple routes for data transmission. The protocol maintains two tested routes for each data session and devises new fast switching mechanisms that switch the data flow from one route to another to guarantee the throughput. Multimedia applications require guaranteed throughput as well as bounded end-to-end delay. To address this issue we.have designed Flow Aware Admission Control-Multipath with Multiple constraints (F AAC-MM). This protocol assures the application with guaranteed throughput as well as bounded end-to-end delay. FAAC-MM switches the data flow from primary to secondary route on the basis of achieved throughput and end-to-end delay. We have also analyzed and compared the proposed protocols with the state of the art protocols such as CACP and Multi-path for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. The simulation results show that our protocol outperforms the above mentioned protocols.

Book Contributions to Provide a QoS aware Self configured Framework for Video streaming Services Over Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Contributions to Provide a QoS aware Self configured Framework for Video streaming Services Over Ad Hoc Networks written by Ahmad Mohamad Mezher and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ad hoc networks have attracted much attention from the research community over the last years and important technical advances have risen as a consequence. These networks are foreseen as an important kind of next generation access networks, where multimedia services will be demanded by end users from their wireless devices everywhere. In this thesis, we specially focus our research work on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and on vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), two kind of ad hoc networks over which interesting multimedia services can be provided. The special haracteristics of MANETs/VANETs, such as mobility, dynamic network topology (specially in VANETs), energy constraints (in case of MANETs), infrastructureless and variable link capacity, make the QoS (Quality of Service) provision over these networks an important challenge for the research community. Due to that, there is a need to develop new routing protocols specially designed for MANETs and VANETs able to provide multimedia services. The main objective of this thesis is to contribute in the development of the communication framework for MANETs and VANETs to improve decisions to select paths or next hops in the moment of forwarding video-reporting messages. In this way, it would be possible to have a quick answer to manage daily problems in the city and help the emergency units (e.g., police, ambulances, health care units) in case of incidents (e.g., traffic accidents). Furthermore, in case of VANETs, a real scenario must be created and thus we have analysed the presence of obstacles in real maps. Also, in case of an obstacle found between the current forwarding node and the candidate next forwarding node, the packet is stored in a buffer, for a maximum time, until a forwarding neighbour node is found; otherwise, the packet is dropped. To improve the communication framework for MANETs, we propose a new routing protocol based on a game-theoretical scheme for N users specially designed to transmit video-reporting messages. Our proposal makes the network more efficient and provides a higher degree of satisfaction of the users by receiving much more packets with a lower average end-to-end delay, lower jitter and higher PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio). In addition, we propose a geographical routing protocol for VANETs that considers multiple metrics named 3MRP (Multimedia Multimetric Map-Aware Routing Protocol) [1]. 3MRP is a geographical protocol based on hop-by-hop forwarding. The metrics considered in 3MRP are the distance, the density of vehicles in transmission range, the available bandwidth, the future trajectory of the neighbouring nodes and the MAC layer losses. Those metrics are weighted to obtain a multimetric score. Thus, a node selects another node among its neighbours as the best forwarding node to increase the percentage of successful packet delivery, minimizing the average packet delay and offering a certain level of quality and service. Furthermore, a new algorithm named DSW (Dynamic Self-configured Weights) computes for each metric its corresponding weight depending on the current network conditions. As a consequence, nodes are classiffied in a better way.
