Book excerpt: We present selected new results on strong interaction physics from the SLD experiment at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC), symmetry tests of b anti-bg vertex, the rate of secondary b anti-b production via gluon splitting, the B hadron energy spectrum and rapidity correlations between identified charged hadrons. The parity violation in Z° --> b anti-bg decays is consistent with electroweak theory plus QCD. New tests of T- and CP-conservation at the bbg vertex are performed. A new measurement of the rate of gluon splitting into b anti-b pairs yields g{sub b anti-b} = 0.00307 " 0.00071 (stat.) " 0.00066 (syst.) (Preliminary). The B hadron energy spectrum is measured using a new inclusive technique, allowing tests of predictions for its shape and a measurement of (x{sub B} = 0.714 " 0.005 (stat.) " 0.007 (stat.) (Preliminary)). A study of correlations in rapidity between pairs of identified pi{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p/anti-p confirms that strangeness and baryon number are conserved locally, and shows local charge conservation between meson-baryon and strange-nonstrange pairs. Flavor-dependent long-range correlations are observed for all combinations of these hadron species. The first study of correlations using signed rapidities is done and find the first direct observation of baryon number ordering along the q/anti-q axis.

Book excerpt: The authors present a measurement of the strong coupling a{sub s} derived from multijet rates using data collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC and find that a{sub s}(M{sub Z}2) = 0.118 " 0.002(stat.) " 0.003(syst.) " 0.010(theory). The authors present tests of the flavor independence of strong interactions via preliminary measurements of the ratios a{sub s}(b)/a{sub s}(udse) and a{sub s}(uds)/a{sub s}(bc). In addition, the authors have measured the difference in charged particle multiplicity between Z° --> b{bar b} and Z° --> u{bar u}, d{bar d}, s{bar s} events, and find that it supports the prediction of perturbative QCD that the multiplicity difference be independent of center-of-mass energy. Finally, they have made a preliminary study of jet polarization using the jet handedness technique.

The gluon energy spectrum is measured over the full kinematic range, providing an improved test of QCD and limits on anomalous bbg and bbg couplings. The parity violation in Z[sup 0][yields] b[bar b]g decays is consistent with electroweak theory plus QCD. New tests of T- and CP-conservation at the bbg vertex are performed. An improved measurement of the rate of gluon splitting into b[bar b] pairs yields g[sub b[bar b]]= 0.00244[+-] 0.00059(stat.)[+-] 0.00034(syst.). We also present a number of new results on jet fragmentation into identified hadrons. The B hadron energy spectrum is measured over the full kinematic range using a new, inclusive technique, allowing stringent tests of predictions for its shape and a precise measurement ofx[sub B]= 0.710[+-] 0.003(stat.)[+-] 0.006(syst.) (Preliminary). A detailed study of correlations in rapidity y between pairs of identified[pi][sup[+-]], K[sup[+-]] and p/[bar p] confirms that strangeness and baryon number are conserved locally, and shows local charge conservation between meson-baryon and strange-nonstrange pairs. Flavor-dependent long-range correlations are observed for all combinations of these hadron species, yielding new information on leading particle production. The first study of correlations using rapidities signed such that y 0 corresponds to the quark direction provides additional new insights into fragmentation, including the first direct observation of baryon number ordering along the q[bar q] axis.

Book excerpt: This talk reviews seven SLD papers, which provide useful, unique, and precise contributions to our understanding of hadron production in the decay of Z°'s produced in ee− collisions. The data were gathered by the SLAC Large Detector (SLD) at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). This accelerator/detector is able to compete with LEP in many studies, in spite of smaller statistics, due to systematic advantages including a tiny and stable interaction region combined with a precise high-resolution vertex detector, excellent particle identification, and a highly polarized electron beam. The papers include studies of: factorial and cumulant moments; charged multiplicities produced by b, c, and uds quarks; rapidity gaps; orientations and energy partitions of three-jet events; jet handedness; triple-product correlation in polarized Z° decays to three jets; and [pi]{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p, K°, and [Lambda] production in Z° decays. Comparisons are made to LEP results where appropriate.
