Download or read book Thinking the Sculpture Garden written by Penny Florence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book poses two, deceptively simple, questions: what is a sculpture garden, and what happens when you give equal weight to the main elements of landscape, planting and artwork? Its wide-ranging frame of reference, including the USA, Europe and Japan, is brought into focus through Tremenheere Sculpture Garden, Cornwall, with which the book begins and ends. Effectively less than 15 years old, and largely the work of one man, Tremenheere affords an opportunity to examine as work-in-progress the creation of a new kind of sculpture garden. Including a historical overview, the book traverses multiple ways of seeing and experiencing sculpture gardens, culminating in an exploration of their relevance as 'cultural ecology' in the context of globalisation, urbanisation and climate change. The thinking here is non-dualist and broadly aligned with New Materialisms and Material Feminisms to explore our place as humans in the non-human world on which we depend. Eminent contributors, including John Dixon Hunt, George Descombes, Bernard Lassus and David Leatherbarrow, approach these issues through practices and theories of landscape architecture; garden and art making; history and writing; and philosophy. Richly illustrated with over 100 images, including a colour plate section, the book will primarily appeal to those engaged in professional or academic research, along with sculpture garden visitors, who will find new and surprising ways of experiencing plants and art in natural and urban settings.
Download or read book Imagery written by Bob Nugent and published by Board and Bench Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, winemaker Joe Benziger and Sonoma artist Bob Nugent struck on the idea of putting original art on special releases of Imagery Estate wines. The goal was straight-forward: commission the world's modern art luminaries to create works for reproduction onto wine labels. Two decades and 160 labels later, they have assembled a staggering collection of contemporary art, from the likes of Sol Lewitt, Terry Winters, Nancy Graves, John Baldessari, Judy Pfaff, and Bob Arneson. This book highlights 133 works of art, the best of the Imagery collection. The images are big and lush, and accompanied by biographical sketches of the artists' careers, as well as a short description of their individual ideas and methods. The pictorial index shows the works in their label-form, from 1985 to the most recent vintages. These images are evocations of wine's multi-faceted ability to inspire us.

Book excerpt: From the author of The Old Ways and Underland, an "eloquent (and compulsively readable) reminder that, though we're laying waste the world, nature still holds sway over much of the earth's surface." --Bill McKibben Winner of the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature and a finalist for the Orion Book Award Are there any genuinely wild places left in Britain and Ireland? That is the question that Robert Macfarlane poses to himself as he embarks on a series of breathtaking journeys through some of the archipelago's most remarkable landscapes. He climbs, walks, and swims by day and spends his nights sleeping on cliff-tops and in ancient meadows and wildwoods. With elegance and passion he entwines history, memory, and landscape in a bewitching evocation of wildness and its vital importance.

Download or read book Royal Academy Illustrated 2005 written by Royal Academy of Arts and published by Royal Academy Books. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Academy's popular Summer Exhibition has been an annual event since 1769. Today, about 1,000 works are selected each year from more than 10,000 entries, representing some 5,000 artists. The resulting exhibition includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, architectural design, and models, and continues to be the largest open exhibition in the UK. The Royal Academy Illustrated, first published in the 1870s, presents the highlights of each year's show and is a fascinating barometer of changing artistic tastes. About 180 works are illustrated, accompanied by installation shots of the galleries that reveal the individual nature of each year's show. These photographs, together with commentaries on the works by the exhibition coordinators, make this a handsome and informative record of this most popular show.

Download or read book Geometry as Objective Science in Elementary School Classrooms written by Wolff-Michael Roth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the origins of geometry in and out of the intuitively given everyday lifeworlds of children in a second-grade mathematics class. These lifeworlds, though pre-geometric, are not without model objects that denote and come to anchor geometric idealities that they will understand at later points in their lives. Roth's analyses explain how geometry, an objective science, arises anew from the pre-scientific but nevertheless methodic actions of children in a structured world always already shot through with significations. He presents a way of understanding knowing and learning in mathematics that differs from other current approaches, using case studies to demonstrate contradictions and incongruences of other theories – Immanuel Kant, Jean Piaget, and more recent forms of (radical, social) constructivism, embodiment theories, and enactivism – and to show how material phenomenology fused with phenomenological sociology provides answers to the problems that these other paradigms do not answer.
