Book excerpt: One of George Bernard Shaw's best-known plays, Pygmalion was a rousing success on the London and New York stages, an entertaining motion picture and a great hit with its musical version, My Fair Lady. An updated and considerably revised version of the ancient Greek legend of Pygmalion and Galatea, the 20th-century story pokes fun at the antiquated British class system. In Shaw's clever adaptation, Professor Henry Higgins, a linguistic expert, takes on a bet that he can transform an awkward cockney flower seller into a refined young lady simply by polishing her manners and changing the way she speaks. In the process of convincing society that his creation is a mysterious royal figure, the Professor also falls in love with his elegant handiwork. The irresistible theme of the emerging butterfly, together with Shaw's brilliant dialogue and splendid skills as a playwright, have made Pygmalion one of the most popular comedies in the English language. A staple of college drama courses, it is still widely performed.

(Pygmalion, Preface) Named after a Greek mythological character the play was first presented on stage to the public in 1913. In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. Shaw would also have been familiar with the burlesque version, Galatea, or Pygmalion Reversed. Shaw's play has been adapted numerous times, most notably as the musical My Fair Lady and its film version. Shaw mentioned that the character of Professor Henry Higgins was inspired by several British professors of phonetics: Alexander Melville Bell, Alexander J. Ellis, Tito Pagliardini, but above all, the cantankerous Henry Sweet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pygmalion has become by far Shaw's most famous play, mostly through its film adaptation in 1938. Shaw was intimately involved with the making of the film. He wrote the screenplay and was the first man to win both a Nobel Prize and an Academy Award.Shaw wrote the part of Eliza Doolittle for a beautiful actress named Mrs. Patrick Campbell, with whom it was rumored that he was having an affair. This rumor later turned out not to be true, and some critics read the disappointed love affair between Higgins and Eliza as reflecting Shaw's own romantic frustrations including a long, celibate marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bernard Shaw is one of the most influential playwrights of the twentieth century. The collection "Pygmalion and Three Other Plays" contains his best works, which are known for their rapier wit, ideas of decency, and portrayal of human relationships. Shaw wanted his audiences to realize that people, regardless of race, gender, or class, were all human beings with the same needs as everyone else. "Pygmalion" is a modern retelling of the classic story of the same name. Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetician, tries to transform a lower-class cockney girl into a lady by teaching her to speak like a proper Englishwoman. What Higgins forgets, though, is that Eliza is a human being who only wants to be treated as such; in Higgins' mind, Eliza is a fun wager, a test of his abilities. When he thinks that he has won and turned Eliza into a fine lady, he becomes lonely and misses her vivacious personality. "Major Barbara," "The Doctor's Dilemma," and "Heartbreak House" all deal with different themes, but each play contains a unique play of words, blending comedy with feeling and heart to create a story which will make a large impression on the audiences' heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an annotated and illustrated version of the book1.contains an updated biography of the author at the end of the book for a better understanding of the text.2.It also contains new and unique illustrations to give a better documentation and realism to the bookAs will be seen later on, Pygmalion needs, not a preface, but a sequel, which I have supplied in its due place. The English have no respect fortheir language, and will not teach their children to speak it. Theyspell it so abominably that no man can teach himself what it soundslike. It is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth withoutmaking some other Englishman hate or despise him. German and Spanishare accessible to foreigners: English is not accessible even toEnglishmen. The reformer England needs today is an energetic phoneticenthusiast: that is why I have made such a one the hero of a popularplay. There have been heroes of that kind crying in the wilderness formany years past. When I became interested in the subject towards theend of the eighteen-seventies, Melville Bell was dead; but Alexander J.Ellis was still a living patriarch, with an impressive head alwayscovered by a velvet skull cap, for which he would apologize to publicmeetings in a very courtly manner. He and Tito Pagliardini, anotherphonetic veteran, were men whom it was impossible to dislike. HenrySweet, then a young man, lacked their sweetness of character: he wasabout as conciliatory to conventional mortals as Ibsen or SamuelButler. His great ability as a phonetician (he was, I think, the bestof them all at his job) would have entitled him to high officialrecognition, and perhaps enabled him to popularize his subject, but forhis Satanic contempt for all academic dignitaries and persons ingeneral who thought more of Greek than of phonetics. Once, in the dayswhen the Imperial Institute rose in South Kensington, and JosephChamberlain was booming the Empire, I induced the editor of a leadingmonthly review to commission an article from Sweet on the imperialimportance of his subject. When it arrived, it contained nothing but asavagely derisive attack on a professor of language and literaturewhose chair Sweet regarded as proper to a phonetic expert only. Thearticle, being libelous, had to be returned as impossible; and I had torenounce my dream of dragging its author into the limelight. When I methim afterwards, for the first time for many years, I found to myastonishment that he, who had been a quite tolerably presentable youngman, had actually managed by sheer scorn to alter his personalappearance until he had become a sort of walking repudiation of Oxfordand all its traditions. It must have been largely in his own despitethat he was squeezed into something called a Readership of phoneticsthere. The future of phonetics rests probably with his pupils, who allswore by him; but nothing could bring the man himself into any sort ofcompliance with the university, to which he nevertheless clung bydivine right in an intensely Oxonian way. I daresay his papers, if hehas left any, include some satires that may be published without toodestructive results fifty years hence. He was, I believe, not in theleast an ill-natured man: very much the opposite, I should say; but hewould not suffer fools gladly

Features Perfect size 6x9 in Included short author's biography Tablet and e-book formatted Unique cover design Summary Two old gentlemen meet in the rain one night at Covent Garden. Professor Higgins is a scientist of phonetics, and Colonel Pickering is a linguist of Indian dialects. The first bets the other that he can, with his knowledge of phonetics, convince high London society that, in a matter of months, he will be able to transform the cockney speaking Covent Garden flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, into a woman as poised and well-spoken as a duchess. The next morning, the girl appears at his laboratory on Wimpole Street to ask for speech lessons, offering to pay a shilling, so that she may speak properly enough to work in a flower shop. Higgins makes merciless fun of her, but is seduced by the idea of working his magic on her. Pickering goads him on by agreeing to cover the costs of the experiment if Higgins can pass Eliza off as a duchess at an ambassador's garden party. The challenge is taken, and Higgins starts by having his housekeeper bathe Eliza and give her new clothes. Then Eliza's father Alfred Doolittle comes to demand the return of his daughter, though his real intention is to hit Higgins up for some money. The professor, amused by Doolittle's unusual rhetoric, gives him five pounds. On his way out, the dustman fails to recognize the now clean, pretty flower girl as his daughter.
