Book The Stepfamily Puzzle

Download or read book The Stepfamily Puzzle written by Craig Everett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do stepfamilies experience greater levels of stressors than first families? Do they also experience more negative manifestations of stress? Find the latest research on these questions and more in this groundbreaking exploration of the complex factors and dynamics that make up stepfamilies. The Stepfamily Puzzle fills a gap in research that has not kept pace with the rapid growth of interest in this subject. It sets some of the pieces of the stepfamily puzzle into an intergenerational framework that includes the roles of grandparents, parent-child interactions, the struggles to define boundaries and achieve marital intimacy, and the underlying effects of financial support on stepfamily well-being. The Stepfamily Puzzle compares the effects of stress in stepfamilies and conditions in other families and reveals that the differences between the two types of families may not be as dramatic as long assumed. It also examines in-depth the emotional and financial stressors that impact stepfamilies and how this stress is exhibited in family relationships. Other groundbreaking research presented in this book includes: the closeness of relationships between children and grandparents in stepfamilies as compared to children and grandparents in first families effects of ongoing attachment to the former spouse on post-divorce relationships stepsibling subsystems a comparison of self-esteem and behavior problems of stepchildren and children in other family structures social support received by children in stepmother, stepfather, and intact families quality of stepfather-adolescent relationships effect of child support on stepfamily satisfactionTherapists, attorneys, and those interested in the numerous therapeutic and psychoeducational programs, self-help groups, and trade literature available on stepfamily relationships will find The Stepfamily Puzzle a valuable introduction to current research in this area. By presenting the complex variables that interact within stepfamilies, this book helps professionals understand the dynamics behind stepfamily relationships so they can provide effective support and care.

Book The Affirmative Action Puzzle

Download or read book The Affirmative Action Puzzle written by Melvin I. Urofsky and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich, multifaceted history of affirmative action from the Civil Rights Act of 1866 through today’s tumultuous times From acclaimed legal historian, author of a biography of Louis Brandeis (“Remarkable” —Anthony Lewis, The New York Review of Books, “Definitive”—Jeffrey Rosen, The New Republic) and Dissent and the Supreme Court (“Riveting”—Dahlia Lithwick, The New York Times Book Review), a history of affirmative action from its beginning with the Civil Rights Act of 1866 to the first use of the term in 1935 with the enactment of the National Labor Relations Act (the Wagner Act) to 1961 and John F. Kennedy’s Executive Order 10925, mandating that federal contractors take “affirmative action” to ensure that there be no discrimination by “race, creed, color, or national origin” down to today’s American society. Melvin Urofsky explores affirmative action in relation to sex, gender, and education and shows that nearly every public university in the country has at one time or another instituted some form of affirmative action plan--some successful, others not. Urofsky traces the evolution of affirmative action through labor and the struggle for racial equality, writing of World War I and the exodus that began when some six million African Americans moved northward between 1910 and 1960, one of the greatest internal migrations in the country’s history. He describes how Harry Truman, after becoming president in 1945, fought for Roosevelt’s Fair Employment Practice Act and, surprising everyone, appointed a distinguished panel to serve as the President’s Commission on Civil Rights, as well as appointing the first black judge on a federal appeals court in 1948 and, by executive order later that year, ordering full racial integration in the armed forces. In this important, ambitious, far-reaching book, Urofsky writes about the affirmative action cases decided by the Supreme Court: cases that either upheld or struck down particular plans that affected both governmental and private entities. We come to fully understand the societal impact of affirmative action: how and why it has helped, and inflamed, people of all walks of life; how it has evolved; and how, and why, it is still needed.

Book excerpt: There are so many people who are suffering in silence. When they're in public, they put on a face as though everything is well. When they are long, they slip back into depression. We need to learn to get along, stop judging, and learn to love one another. That begins with the person you see in the mirror. The most powerful thing in the world is the human mind. People should take the words can't and impossible out of their vocabulary. If those two words are in your vocabulary, you will have a defeated mindset and you will fail before you get started. If you have faith, belief. Come up with a plan and take action. Anything is possible. The power is in belief. If you have the will, anything is possible. The purpose of the material in this book is to give the gift of hope. I want to inspire you people and lift them up. There are some people who are stressed out and depressed and have fallen into a dark place because of things they have experienced in life. Some of them have given up and stopped looking for a way out. If you are in a dark place in life, darkness cannot drive out darkness. It takes light to drive out darkness. We are bombarded with negativity from news and social media all day long. The materials in this book are meant to be a ray of light to drive out the darkness. The short stories in this book are about real people who've made mistakes. You can't make all your mistakes, but you can learn from someone else. Another purpose of this book is to encourage people to use their inner pain and hurt as fuel to push themselves toward their dreams. If you're not happy where you are in life, it's up to you to change it. You have to take responsibility for your life. No one is going to do it for you. No one is going to care for you more than you care for yourself. Here is a list of some of the topics that will be discussed in this book: learning disabilities, depression, loneliness, suicide, intuition, solitude, self-love, self-hate, self-worth, self-esteem, stress, and much more.

Book excerpt: This book contains the results of an experiment I have done on myself. I have Asperger’s syndrome. I also had a condition called Schizoid. During the Schizoid condition which lasted twenty-three years, I wrote an epic poem about my life story: Ember. After completing the poem, I experienced something that most people would find unbelievable, and I got out of the Schizoid condition. And then I remembered why I did this experiment. After establishing the connection between Schizoid and Asperger’s, the analysis I made allowed me to produce scientific theses on many issues. For instance, what dreams mean and the function of dreams in the evolutionary design. And I claim to have solved a mystery that has puzzled the human mind for thousands of years... Solution of this mystery also explains the working mechanism of evolution. To understand the content of this book better, I recommend you reading Ember first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A shorter, simpler first draft of the Gospel of Mark has been theorized by New Testament scholars for almost two hundred years. Using literary tools, David Oliver Smith strips away interpolation and redaction from the canonical Gospel to reveal that long-sought first draft--the Original Gospel of Mark. Original Mark, shorter than the canonical version and with several large blocks of text replaced in their original locations, reveals a coherent structure and a different picture of who Jesus is. But it is anything other than simple. The Original Gospel also presents puzzles for the curious reader of Mark to solve, and Smith has found the keys to their solution. Analysis of the text that was interpolated into Mark reveals who that redactor might have been. Evidence is presented that it was the author of the Gospel of Luke who redacted the first-written Gospel, jumbled its structure, and changed its Christology. Follow the analysis of literary structures created by the genius who wrote Mark's Gospel and discover the astounding design of the Original Gospel of Mark.

Download or read book The People Puzzle written by Fred Masey and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2023-08-27 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I suppose I’ve been a communicator all my life. As a child I talked a lot. As an adult I put it to good use for seventeen years in sales and marketing. My friends always said I could probably sell refrigerators to Eskimos, which might explain the period of global cooling they are predicting. They also said that where I really belonged was on the radio. Now I know why. At the tender age of thirty-eight I embarked on a new career and broke into broadcasting, both because it was a long standing secret desire and because everyone encouraged me so enthusiastically. As a good friend put it after I was on the air for a few years, "All this time we've been trying to figure out how to shut you up and now, with a simple ten-cent knob -- CLICK!" Twenty more years, several radio gigs [mostly New York and Philly] and my own commercial production business have catapulted by since that observation and they've all been successful, so I guess somebody wanted to listen. Today I find myself happily living in the Southeastern U.S. with an incredible bride, a Goldendoodle who thinks he’s a kid, a small spotted mixed breed, and a chatty parrot that seems to repeat everything except what you try to teach her. Four children are a different story. A while back they joined forces to turn me into the world's youngest grandpa' and with eight grandchildren, I'm running out of knees to bounce them on. I still wonder who the heck that is looking out at me from the mirror ... and just realized I've reduced my entire life to a mere four paragraphs. The kid living within, the stranger in the looking glass, and the blur of changes that have marked the march of time tell me that you and I may be experiencing many of the same feelings. That's why I'm grateful for this opportunity to share some thoughts with you that might help us both remember, to quote Maya Angelou, “Life should not be measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.” Life is good. Looking back, I wouldn't trade any of it for the world -- of course, no one has offered it yet. FreD Masey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 20, 30, or even 40 years of marriage, countless vacations, raising well-adjusted children, and sharing property and finances, what could go wrong? Gray Divorce is a provocative look at the rising rate of marital splits after the age of 50. Renowned author and researcher Jocelyn Elise Crowley uncovers the reasons why men and women divorce—and the penalties and benefits that they receive for their choices. From the outside, many may ask why couples in mid-life and readying for retirement choose to make a drastic change in their marital status. Yet, nearly one out of every four divorces in the United States is “gray.” With a deft eye, Crowley analyzes the differing experiences of women and men in this mid-life transition—the seismic shift in individual priorities, the role of increased life expectancy, and how women are affected economically while men are affected socially. With a realistic yet passionate voice, Crowley shares the personal positive outlooks and the necessary supportive public policies that must be enacted to best help the newly divorced. Engaging and instructive, Gray Divorce is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary American culture.

Book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised

Download or read book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised written by Colleen Barnett and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An internationally acclaimed novel, the Kirkus Reviews wrote, ‘Shrewdly balanced between earthy tenderness and the dreadful trauma of disillusionment: a grave yet limber narrative - and a very welcome import.’ In a strange old building referred to as Paddy's Puzzle, Clara Bentley endures the fears of wartime and awaits the arrival of her lover, Ambrose. He's an American Marine. And he's black. Having grown up in suburban Hamilton, her move to Auckland marks an escape from the dreariness and restrictions of her childhood. In this building, full of an odd assortment of people, she waits, not just for Ambrose, but for the air-raid siren, for the culmination of her illness and for the sister to whom she dreads having to explain her new life in the Puzzle. The novel was shortlisted for the New Zealand Book Awards. The San Francisco Chronicle commented: ‘The supple flow of Kidman’s language is a pleasure to read. She’s particularly alive to the sudden swelling of emotion just below the surface of a carefully worded conversation. And she tosses off startlingly true images in the most offhand manner.’
