He received a common school education at Shelbyville and was admitted to the bar soon after his majority. He practiced law until called to preach the Gospel at the age of twenty-four. Book Prayer That Teaches to Pray Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prayer That Teaches to Pray Classic Reprint written by Marcus Dods and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prayer That Teaches to Pray "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven." Far better than all instructions and precepts about prayer is this simple model. Using this, we learn both how to pray and what to pray for. And when we have learned this prayer, it will be time to consider how we shall expand the teaching of our Lord. If it is "after this manner" we are to pray, then who can restrain prayer on the ground of lack of time for devotion? This is the "five words with understanding" preferable to ten thousand of formality or repetition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Prayer This is the first of a short series of books on the Great Christian Doctrines. There is, I believe, a widespread and earnest desire on the part of teachers of the Bible to do more than has lately been done for the teaching of Christian doctrine. The complaint that doctrine is dry is due to the way it is taught, even more than to the spirit of the age Anything is dry that is disorderly or unreal. In this volume the Doctrine of Prayer is presented in an orderly sequence, and contact with reality is maintained at every step by means of illustration or example. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prayer, What It Is and What It Does 1lished Church is calling for a revised prayer-book which will represent the esthetic and sociological aspirations as well as the newer religious insights of 'the age. Throughout English speaking Christendom, in churches of the liturgical type, there are gather ings for informal prayer, as a supple ment to the regular services, and among church-going people there is a demand for books of prayers which may help those to whom the art of self-expression does not come easily. But still more striking and still more significant is the fact that thousands who are out of sympathy with the churches are feeling the influence of the revived belief in prayer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Getting Things From God: A Study of the Prayer Life This was the petition of disciples who came to Jesus, desiring that He would aid them in this matter. He did not refuse the help they asked. He told them how to pray and He told them what great things even a small bit of faith would accomplish, if they really prayed. When you pray, say: 'our Father.' If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can overturn mountains or pluck up trees by the roots. This is the teaching of our Lord. It is obvious that the force which is to accomplish such results is a world-moving one. It is not a trifling power, but a power that can shake and destroy and build up. Book The Meaning of Prayer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Meaning of Prayer Classic Reprint written by Harry Emerson Fosdick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is prayer and what does it mean to pray? This is the question that Harry Emerson Fosdick addresses and answers through The Meaning of Prayer. Although published in 1915, this compilation of readings and short prayers still remains relevant to modern spiritual warriors and retreatants as the discussions presented are considered age-old truths upon which Christianity is based. This edition contains 10 chapters, each having daily readings that span a week. As such, this is an ideal guide for those desiring to go on a lengthy retreat, as well as those seeking something that will help them pray daily. Even though the readings are good for 10 weeks, one can stretch out a chapter to encompass a few weeks to a month in order to better "digest" and work on the points for reflection offered by the author. Each chapter opens with 7 readings, followed by the author's comment of the week. The "comment" is a misnomer as the passage is actually a few pages long. It ends with a set of "suggestions for thought and discussion." What's notable about this compilation is that, aside from Biblical quotes, the author supplies excerpts of poems and other types of inspirational literary works that are still relevant and related to the topic at hand. Those who are novices in prayer, as well as those who have been doing it for years, will find this book very helpful and a blessing indeed. Book Perfect Prayer How Offered

Download or read book Perfect Prayer How Offered written by Chauncey Giles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perfect Prayer, How Offered: How Answered All the happiness and blessings we enjoy are also the effect of immutable causes. Man was made for happiness. All his faculties of body and spirit are organized to be the subjects of pleasurable sensations and the most exqmsite joys, and all the forms and forces of the material and spirit ual worlds are adjusted to this infinitely complex organiza tion with the most delicate and the most exact precision for the purpose of ministering to human happiness, the essential purpose for which the Lord works. Why, then, should we ask the Lord to do that for ourselves or others which He is in the constant effort to do? He regards us with infinite love now; can any appeal from human lips move Him to an intenser love? He is employing all the means in His infinite power direct-ed by His infinite wisdom for our highest good now; can He be persuaded to do more or better by our importunities? It is impossible in the nature of things. 'vhy, then, should we pray? The answer evidently must be that our asking is one of the means, one link in the chain of causes and effects by which the evil is averted or the good bestowed. Book The Christian Doctrine of Prayer

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Prayer written by James Freeman Clarke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Prayer: An Essay There are two kinds of Prayer, the Prayer of Faith and the Prayer of Form. Men must either pray in earnest, because they expect their prayer to accomplish something, and ask God for what they want just as they would ask any one else, - expecting to get it; and this kind of prayer I call the Prayer of Faith. Or they must pray as a matter of propriety, and from a sense of duty, - because prayer is beautiful, or because prayer is commanded; and this kind of prayer I call the Prayer of Form. Now when people get to praying as a form, - a proper, beautiful, excellent form though it be, - they will soon leave off praying at all. A certain insincerity is felt in such a work. We cannot go on with it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Sunday School Prayer Book Classic Reprint written by Treadwell Walden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School Prayer Book The Book of Common Prayer contains no provision for worship in the Sunday-school, and the multitude of published liturgies would seem to be sufficient evidence that a prayer book, especially adapted to children, is a universal want in the church. The more the Sunday-school system is perfected, the more will this want be felt. The children practically form a congregation by themselves, with a worship and teach ing of their own. They need, therefore, a prayer-book of their own not by any means as a substitute for the great manual, (any more than attendance at Sunday-school is a substitute for attendance at church, ) but rather as an intro duction to it a sort of primer prayer-book, so closely resem bling it in form and arrangement as to engage their interest and affection, and yet so child-like in character as to be out grown with childhood.
