Book The Transformative Cinema of Alejandro Jodorowsky

Download or read book The Transformative Cinema of Alejandro Jodorowsky written by George Melnyk and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alejandro Jodorowsky is a theatre director, writer of graphic novels and comics, novelist, poet, and an expert in the Tarot. He is also an auteur filmmaker who garnered attention with his breakthrough film El Topo in 1970. He has been called a “cult” filmmaker, whose films are surreal, hallucinatory, and provocative. The Transformative Cinema of Alejandro Jodorowsky explores the ways in which Jodorowsky's films are transformative in a psychologically therapeutic way. It also examines his signature style, which includes the symbolic meaning of various colors in which he clothes his actors, the use of his own family members in the films, and his casting of himself in leading roles. This total involvement of himself and his family in his auteur films led to his psycho-therapeutic theories and practices: metagenealogy and psychomagic. This book is the only the second book in the English language in print that deals with all of Jodorowsky's films, beginning with his earliest mime film in 1957 and ending with his 2019 film on psychomagic. It also connects his work as a writer and therapist to his films, which themselves attempt to obliterate the line between fantasy and reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Luv Guv: I totally get the mountain you created, walking each step of your daily COVID briefings with you, anticipating and coaching from my love of football, SCUBA Diving, Sea Captain and School of Hard Knocks experiences. I boldly critique your presentations as if you are a Divemaster. Please pardon, but my ideas oft preceded your daily briefings. Sharing this with my long-time friend and confidant via email, we joke, “Just Solving All The World’s Problems on Paper”. Home during Shelter-In-Place, I finally finish writing novels. You are positively portrayed except for our dads’ brash talk, a literary device I created to show New Yorkers, even politicians, are not that different from Midwestern farmers. Don’t worry, no one takes anything Dads say about daughter’s potential boyfriends seriously. As a Bible student, consider that Dad faults King David, a nearly perfect man in God’s eyes. Yes, of David and Goliath fame. On morning strolls on Heaven’s outskirts, your dad, the illustrious former Governor, finds my dad who eked his way into Heaven on a loophole I found. In my overactive imagination, our dads talk about our mutual single status. Your dad is intrigued by my ability to talk smack, my figure (always a strength), my brain (particularly in governance), and my knowledge of Football. They meddle, using Divine Intervention Tricks to help us together solve the COVID Crisis. Singles whether city or country, across the entire universe endure matchmaking. Despite all the hoopla and uproar, more unites us all than separates, excluding elitist greed and fear mongering designed to distract and separate Average Americans from money and opportunity. That gets me started down many rabbit holes and frequent laments “Where Have All The Heroes Gone?” P.S, I withhold judgment on your “The Boyfriend” take. I’ve learned to observe these things first.

Book excerpt: The untold story of the academics who became OSS spies, invented modern spycraft, and helped turn the tide of the war At the start of WWII, the U.S. found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a precursor to today’s CIA, was quickly formed—and, in an effort to fill its ranks with experts, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly, literature professors, librarians, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work—and these surprising spies would go on to profoundly shape both the course of the war and our cultural institutions with their efforts. In Book and Dagger, Elyse Graham draws on personal histories, letters, and declassified OSS files to tell the story of a small but connected group of humanities scholars turned spies. Among them are Joseph Curtiss, a literature professor who hunted down German spies and turned them into double agents; Sherman Kent, a smart-mouthed history professor who rose to become the head of analysis for all of Europe and Africa; and Adele Kibre, an archivist who was sent to Stockholm to secretly acquire documents for the OSS. These unforgettable characters would ultimately help lay the foundations of modern intelligence and transform American higher education when they returned after the war. Thrillingly paced and rigorously researched, Book and Dagger is an inspiring and gripping true story about a group of academics who helped beat the Nazis—a tale that reveals the indelible power of the humanities to change the world.

Book On the Same Track

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carol Corbett Burris
  • Publisher : Beacon Press
  • Release : 2015-03-17
  • ISBN : 0807036900
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book On the Same Track written by Carol Corbett Burris and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A public school principal’s account of the courageous leaders who have dismantled the tracking systems in their schools in order to desegregate classrooms What would happen if a school eliminated the “tracks” that rank students based on their perceived intellectual abilities? Would low-achieving students fall behind and become frustrated? Would their higher-achieving peers suffer from a “watered-down” curriculum? Or is tracking itself the problem? A growing body of research shows that tracking doesn’t increase learning for the minority and low-income students who are overrepresented in low-track classrooms. This de facto segregation has led many civil rights advocates to argue that tracking is turning back the clock on equal education. As a principal at a New York high school, Carol Corbett Burris believed that the curriculum for the best students was the best curriculum for all. She helped lead a bold plan to eliminate tracking from her school, and the results couldn’t have been further from the doom-and-gloom scenarios of tracking proponents. Instead, there was a dramatic improvement in the achievement of all students, across racial and socioeconomic divisions, and a near elimination of the achievement gap. Today, due to those efforts, International Baccalaureate English is the twelfth-grade curriculum for South Side students, and all students take the same challenging courses, together, to prepare them for college. In On the Same Track, Burris draws on her own experience, on the experiences of other schools, and on the latest research to make an impassioned case for detracking. Not only does the practice of tracking fail to benefit lower-tracked students, as Burris shows, but it also results in the resegregation of classrooms. Furthermore, she argues that many of today’s popular reforms emanate from the same “sort and select” mentality that reinforces social stratification based on race and class. On the Same Track is a rousing, controversial, and yet optimistic account of how we need to change our assumptions and policies if we are to live up to the promise of democratic public education. Only by holding all students to the same high standards can we ensure that all have the same opportunity to live up to their full potential.

Book Let s Talk

Download or read book Let s Talk written by Therese Huston and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A game-changing model for giving effective feedback to peers, employees, or even your boss--without offending or demotivating. How are you supposed to tell someone that they're not meeting expectations without crushing their spirit? Regular feedback, when delivered skillfully, can turn average performers into the hardest workers and stars into superstars. Yet many see it as an awkward chore: Recent studies have revealed 37% of managers dread giving feedback, and 65% of employees wish their managers gave more feedback. This trail-blazing new model eliminates the guesswork. Dr. Therese Huston, the founding director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Seattle University, discovered that the key to being listened to is to listen. First, find out what kind of feedback an employee wants most: appreciation, coaching, or evaluation. If they crave one, they'll be more receptive once their need has been satisfied. Then Huston lays out counterintuitive strategies for delivering each type of feedback successfully, including: Start by saying your good intentions out loud: it may feel unnecessary, but it makes all the difference. Side with the person, not the problem: a bad habit or behavior is probably less entrenched than you think. Give reports a chance to correct inaccurate feedback: they want an opportunity to talk more than they want you to be a good talker. This handbook will make a once-stressful ordeal feel natural, and, by greasing the wheels of regular feedback conversations, help managers improve performance, trust, and mutual understanding.
