Download or read book The Literary History of Alberta Volume One written by George Melnyk and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 1998-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alberta's contradictory landscape has fired the imaginative energies of writers for centuries. The sweep of the plains, the thrust of the Rockies, and the long roll of the woodlands have left vivid impressions on all of Alberta's writers--both those who passed through Alberta in search of other horizons and those who made it their home. The Literary History of Alberta surveys writing in and about Alberta from prehistory to the middle of the twentieth century. It includes profiles of dozens of writers (from the earnestly intended to the truly gifted) and their texts (from the commercial to the arcane). It reminds us of long-forgotten names and faces, figures who quietly--or not so quietly--wrote the books that underpin Alberta's thriving literary culture today. Melnyk also discusses the institutions that have shaped Alberta's literary culture. The Literary History of Alberta is an essential text for any reader interested in the cultural history of western Canada, and a landmark achievement in Alberta's continuing literary history.

Download or read book Stones Bones and Profiles written by Marcel Kornfeld and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stones, Bones, and Profiles addresses key and cutting-edge research of three pillars of hunter-gatherer archaeology. Stones and bones—flaked stone tools and the bones of the prey animals—are the objects most commonly recovered from hunter-gatherer archaeological sites, and profiles represent the geologic context of the archeological record. Together they constitute the foundations of much of early archaeology, from the appearance of the earliest humans to the advent of the Neolithic. The volume is divided into three sections: Peopling of North America and Paleoindians, Geoarchaeology, and Bison Bone Bed Studies. The first section dissects established theories about the Paleoindians, including the possibility that human populations were in North America before Clovis and the timing of the opening of the Alberta Corridor. The second section provides new perspectives on the age and contexts of several well-known New World localities such as the Lindenmeier Folsom and the UP Mammoth sites, as well as a synthesis of the geoarchaeology of the Rocky Mountains' Bighorn region that addresses significant new data and summarizes decades of investigation. The final section, Bison Bone Bed Studies, consists of groundbreaking zooarchaeological studies offering new perspectives on bison taxonomy and procurement. Stones, Bones, and Profiles presents new data on Paleoindian archaeology and reconsiders previous sites and perspectives, culminating in a thought-provoking and challenging contribution to the ongoing study of Paleoindians around the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Visit the old and learn anew without preconceived ideas”—the meaning of the seal on many of Hiroshi Shimazaki’s paintings encapsulates his creative and contemplative approach to landscape sketching. In Mindful Landscape Sketching, with language as poetic as it is informative, he emphasizes the importance of the artist’s underlying thought processes and encourages readers to expand their imaginations, world views, and historical perspectives. Mindful Landscape Sketching is also, however, an invaluable hands-on resource for artists and would-be artists. Brushes, papers, perspective, focus—all these and more are discussed in detail. He guides the reader through sketching everything from sacred structures to cities, from mist to water to wind, and discusses painting live versus painting from memory or photographs. Over a hundred full-colour examples of the artist’s work from all over the globe illustrate his approach. Practical and inspirational, Mindful Landscape Sketching will appeal to anyone interested in watercolour landscape sketching and painting. It is also a work of art in its own right. First published in Japanese in 2020 by TokyoTosho Shuppan as FukeiShasei no Kokoro, Mindful Landscape Sketching is the first in a three-part series.

Download or read book The Buffalo People written by Liz Bryan and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation The Native people of the Canadian prairies have been living on the land for at least 12,000 years, finding sustainable lifestyles from the grasslands and the aspen parklands. Our knowledge of these people is limited: they had no writing, no large settlements, and very little in the way of lasting material things. Before the arrival of Europeans, they had no guns, no horses, and no hard metals. What clues we have come primarily from the work of archaeologists sifting through the buried evidence-little bits of stone, bone, and pottery, refuse heaps and firepits, ancients villages and burial sites, fingerprints, and prehistoric blood. Liz Bryan takes the clues from decades of archaeological research and presents an immensely entertaining and informative account of these ancient people. First published by University of Alberta Press in 1991, this revised and updated edition of the book features photographs, maps, and line drawings to help illustrate this amazing story.
Download or read book Geophysical Studies Of Bukit Bunuh Meteorite Crater Evidence Penerbit USM written by Rosli Saad and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on 2016 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph illustrates how geophysical methods can be used to explore the subsurface of our Earth. Geophysical method (magnetic, gravity, seismic refraction and 2D resistivity) and geotechnical method (boring) were applied to study the characterization of the subsurface and to prove that the study area was a meteorite impact area. The study continues with the geophysical data acquisition and processing techniques together with integration of the results (including borehole) for better interpretation. A thorough integration of the archaeological data with geophysical data successfully delineates the history of the area investigated. This monograph was compiled accordingly to capture reader’s interest and to ease their understanding. Hence, it would be of interest especially to students in archaeology, engineering, environmental, geology and geophysics courses. This monograph definitely provides new knowledge for the readers and encourages researchers to study subsurface of the Earth using geophysical methods.
