Book Purinergic Signalling in the Central Nervous System and its pharmacological importance in neurological and psychiatric illnesses

Download or read book Purinergic Signalling in the Central Nervous System and its pharmacological importance in neurological and psychiatric illnesses written by Yong Tang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-26 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic aims to honour the 80th birthday of Professor Peter Illes, who is a member of the European Academy of Sciences, the founder/first president of the German Purine Club, and Honorary President of the Chinese Purine Club. He established a worldwide co-operation network on purinergic signalling and is an internationally recognized leader in the field. We aim to collect research articles and reviews from friends, colleagues and co-operation partners of Dr. Illes to showcase, build on and develop research being achieved related to the physiological/pathophysiological roles of purines in the central nervous system (CNS). Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is an intracellular energy-storing molecule, but may also reach the extracellular space, where it participates in cell-to-cell signalling. For this purpose, ATP utilises a range of purinergic receptors activated either by ATP itself (P2X receptors; seven subtypes) or by ATP/ADP and UTP/UDP (P2Y receptors; 8 subtypes) and finally via its enzymatic degradation product, adenosine (P1/A receptors; 4 subtypes). Purine nucleotides and nucleosides together with the whole plethora of receptors and degrading enzymes constitute the purinome. This fascinating and extensive network exists both in the animal kingdom and in humans and is essential in regulating important physiological functions. Disturbances in the network can lead to a variety of illnesses clinically associated with both neurological or psychiatric traits. In recent years, hope has arisen that pharmacological chemistry together with various newly developed methods, will enable researchers to discover and design efficient drugs for treating these neurodegenerative and affective diseases.

Download or read book Purinergic and Pyrimidinergic Signalling written by Maria P. Abracchio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological, pharmacological and molecular biological data generated over the past three decades have demonstrated the existence of two major families of extracellular receptors, the P1, a family of four G-protein coupled receptors and the P2, a family of at least 12 receptors responsive to purine (ATP, ADP) and pyrimidine (UTP) nucleotides through which adenosine and ATP can function as extracellular messengers. The present two-part volume represents an integrated compendium of invited chapters by leading researchers in the area focusing on advances in the understanding of purinergic and pyrimidinergic signaling systems, their role(s) in tissue function and pathophysiology and advances in developing potential new medications based on the modulation of P1 and P2 receptor signaling processes. The volumes will thus provide the reader with a topical, comprehensive and integrated overview of this important area.

However, due to the recentcloning and expression of receptors for ATP and adenosine, novelcompounds have been developed with unique therapeutic potential forthe treatment of thrombosis, stroke, epilepsy, chronic pain, immunological disorders, and cancer. As a result, the study ofadenosine- and ATP-mediated responses in cellular regulation isentering a phase of opportunity and development unmatched since thedays of serotonin receptor research in the 1970s. The only definitive book on the topic, Purinergic Approaches inExperimental Therapeutics covers all of the major therapeuticapplications of purinergic receptors and reflects the very latestdevelopments in this new area of therapeutic research. Twenty-eightchapters, authored by an international group of contributors whoare the leading authorities in the field, provide details onmolecular pharmacology; medicinal chemistry; and therapeuticimplications, including cardiology, metabolism, immunology, neurology, and cancer. Among the topics covered: * Purinergic Neurotransmission and Neuromodulation: A HistoricalPerspective * Adenosine Receptor Subtypes: New Insights from Cloning andFunctional Studies * Modulators of Adenosine Uptake, Release, and Inactivation * Cardiac Electrophysiology of Adenosine: Antiarrhythmic andProarrhythmic Actions * Purinergic Modulation of Gastrointestinal Function * The Role of Adenosine in Asthma * ATP in Brain Function * ATP in the Treatment of Cancer For researchers in pharmacology, physiology, molecular biology, andmedicinal chemistry, Purinergic Approaches in ExperimentalTherapeutics heralds an exciting new era in the understanding ofpurinergic neurotransmission and the development of noveltherapeutic modalities.

Book Receptors P1 and P2 as Targets for Drug Therapy in Humans

Book A Milestone in Frontiers in Pharmacology 1 000 Published Papers in the Section Experimental Pharmacology and Drug Discovery

Download or read book A Milestone in Frontiers in Pharmacology 1 000 Published Papers in the Section Experimental Pharmacology and Drug Discovery written by Salvatore Salomone and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frontiers in Pharmacology was launched in 2010, with a number of sections which were eventually reorganized. The founding Field Chief Editor was Prof. Théophile Godfraind, an eminent scientist active in cardiovascular pharmacology, who pioneered the discovery of calcium antagonists. At that time he invited me to serve as Chief Editor for a section named “Analytical and Experimental Pharmacology”. Later on, our section enlarged and was re-named as “Experimental Pharmacology and Drug Discovery” to outline the translational potential of fundamental pharmacological research and theoretical analysis to the improvement of human health, through the invention of novel medicinal products. We are now entering the 10th year of editorial activity, which sees the publication of the 1,000th paper in our section. Such an achievement is very rewarding for us and our community, but it is even more remarkable when placed into the timeline of our development. In fact, in a 10-year frame we have significantly grown in quantity and quality, e.g. both in number of published papers and in scientific impact. [From a personal perspective by Salvatore Salomone, Specialty Chief Editor]

Book Purinergic Regulation of Respiratory Diseases

Download or read book Purinergic Regulation of Respiratory Diseases written by Maryse Picher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We proudly present the first book to integrate all aspects of purinergic signaling in the respiratory system. The first chapters introduce basic notions of purinergic pharmacology and metabolism, which allows readers from all scientific backgrounds to fully grasp the importance of these signaling networks for airway defenses, including mucociliary clearance and inflammatory responses. Then, chapters are devoted to the groundbreaking discovery that chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), present specific aberrances in purinergic signaling which essentially drive lung complications. The last chapters describe the animal models used to investigate purinergic signaling in respiratory diseases, and the therapeutic applications developed by the pharmaceutical industry based on receptor agonists/antagonists and metabolic correctors. This highly comprehensive manuscript constitutes an invaluable tool for beginners and experts to follow the rapidly evolving research field of purinergic signaling. Furthermore, the critical analysis of past clinical protocols should facilitate the identification of potent therapeutic targets, and provide a better understanding of the data acquired in current clinical trials.
