Book Eidetic Imagery and Typological Methods of Investigation

Download or read book Eidetic Imagery and Typological Methods of Investigation written by E.R. Jaensch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume V of twenty-one in the Cognitive Psychology series. First published in 1930, this study looks at the most important aspect of Eidetics-the theory of eidetic or perceptual images (Anschauungsbilder)-as being its development that represents the first systematic application of typological methods of investigation. The author suggests that if these methods are consistently applied, they will, it seems, throw new light on many departments of psychology.

Download or read book Comedy Seriously written by D. Nikulin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedy, Seriously provides a philosophical interpretation of comedy and argues that comedy displays a particular kind of rationality that reflects philosophical thinking. In particular, that comedy is defined not so much by laughter or jokes, but rather the structure of its plot, which is isomorphic with that of the philosophical argument. Comedy allows for the resolution of a conflict and the achievement of well-being and equality through action that follows the comic plot. Moreover, such action is propelled by the 'thinker on stage,' who, as socially and politically oppressed, contributes to the liberation of all and the achievement of the good life. Comedy, therefore, establishes the universal pattern for justice and well-being and allows us to rethink the notion of subjectivity not as the modern isolated subject, but rather as integrated with others through shared action and dialogical involvement.

Book Parameter Hierarchies and Universal Grammar

Download or read book Parameter Hierarchies and Universal Grammar written by Ian Roberts and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a minimalist approach to cross-linguistic morphosyntactic variation. Ian Roberts argues that the essential insight of the principles-and-parameters approach to variation can be maintained - albeit in a somewhat different guise - in the context of the minimalist program for linguistic theory. The central idea is to organize the parameters of Universal Grammar (UG) into hierarchies that define the ways in which properties of individually variant categories and features may act in concert. A further leading idea, which is consistent with the overall goal of the minimalist programme to reduce the content of UG, is that the parameter hierarchies are not directly determined by UG, and are instead emergent properties stemming from the interaction of the three factors in language design. Cross-linguistic variation in word order, null subjects, incorporation, verb-movement, case/alignment, wh-movement, and negation are all analyzed in the light of this approach. This book represents a significant new contribution to the formal study of cross-linguistic morphosyntactic variation on both the empirical and theoretical levels, and will appeal to researchers and students in all areas of theoretical linguistics and comparative syntax.
