Book The Routledge Companion to Decolonizing Art History

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Decolonizing Art History written by Tatiana Flores and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This companion is the first global, comprehensive text to explicate, theorize, and propose decolonial methodologies for art historians, museum professionals, artists, and other visual culture scholars, teachers, and practitioners. Art history as a discipline and its corollary institutions - the museum, the art market - are not only products of colonial legacies but active agents in the consolidation of empire and the construction of the West. The Routledge Companion to Decolonizing Art History joins the growing critical discourse around the decolonial through an assessment of how art history may be rethought and mobilized in the service of justice - racial, gender, social, environmental, restorative, and more. This book draws attention to the work of artists, art historians, and scholars in related fields who have been engaging with disrupting master narratives and forging new directions, often within a hostile academy or an indifferent art world. The volume unpacks the assumptions projected onto objects of art and visual culture and the discourse that contains them. It equally addresses the manifold complexities around representation as visual and discursive praxis through a range of epistemologies and metaphors originated outside or against the logic of modernity. This companion is organized into four thematic sections: Being and Doing, Learning and Listening, Sensing and Seeing, and Living and Loving. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, museum studies, race and ethnic studies, cultural studies, disability studies, and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.

Book An Introduction to the Works of Peter Weiss

Download or read book An Introduction to the Works of Peter Weiss written by Olaf Berwald and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2003 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses Weiss's plays, fiction, autobiography, and non-fiction prose. Pp. 22-25 illuminate "Die Ermittlung", an oratorio based on Weiss's 1964 attendance at the Frankfurt war crimes trial. He used actual documents both aesthetically and politically. 18 of the defendants appear with their real names, either defending themselves with the jargon of doing their duty or totally denying their guilt. Among the charges against these Nazis were conducting medical experiments, torture, and murder. Ch. 7 (pp. 107-129) elucidates Weiss's three-volume novel "Die Ästhetik des Widerstands", about resistance to Nazism in thought and action. The characters in the novel are based on members of the Rote Kapelle resistance group. Politics and creative thinking (art) are shown as complementary, not contradictory.

Book Luigi Amoroso

Download or read book Luigi Amoroso written by Mario Pomini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the rich and complex path of Luigi Amoroso, the main exponent of the Paretian School in Italy and probably the most important Italian mathematical economist during the interwar period. The author presents, in a systematic form, the evolution of Amoros's thinking and his main achievements. Despite his relevance, many aspects of Amoroso's thought are little known or misunderstood. This volume delves further to explore the Paretian tradition in which Amoroso enlisted, the conservative anti-democratic ideology that prompted his adhesion to fascism, his contribution to defining the main features of economic theory as formal science, and his various contributions to specific fields such as microeconomic theory, equilibrium dynamics, business cycles and non-competitive markets. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in the history of economic thought.

Book The Medicalized Body and Anesthetic Culture

Download or read book The Medicalized Body and Anesthetic Culture written by Brent Dean Robbins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how modern medicine’s mechanistic conception of the body has become a defense mechanism to cope with death anxiety. Robbins draws from research on the phenomenology of the body, the history of cadaver dissection, and empirical research in terror management theory to highlight how medical culture operates as an agent which promotes anesthetic consciousness as a habit of perception. In short, modern medicine’s comportment toward the cadaver promotes the suppression of the memory of the person who donated their body. This suppression of the memorial body comes at the price of concealing the lived, experiential body of patients in medical practice. Robbins argues that this style of coping has influenced Western culture and has helped to foster maladaptive patterns of perception associated with experiential avoidance, diminished empathy, death denial, and the dysregulation of emotion.

  • Author : Paul Oppenheimer
  • Publisher : A&C Black

  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book Machiavelli written by Paul Oppenheimer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Niccolò di Bernardo Machiavelli is not only one of the most fascinating figures of the Italian Renaissance, an outstanding author and statesman, but indisputably one of its most influential political theorists, whose fundamental contributions to ideas of political power - as well as to the history of modern drama - remain astonishingly pertinent. His adventurous life led him to notable heights as a diplomat and reformer of the Florentine military, with his replacement of mercenaries by a citizen-militia. His fall, exile and eventual rehabilitation followed as briskly as his rise. Unlike many innovative thinkers about politics, he developed his radical theories of treachery and social transformation, here explored in terms of their originality, in an atmosphere of violence. Based on his experience of government, his insights led to a shift from understanding statehood, war and society as forms of finitude and stasis to those of process. All this unfolds in Paul Oppenheimer's compelling recreation of Machiavelli's life as he actually lived it.

Book Foundations of a Pure Cost Theory

Download or read book Foundations of a Pure Cost Theory written by Heinrich von Stackelberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heinrich von Stackelberg's book, "Grundlagen einer reinen Kostentheorie", published in 1932 was at the forefront of a growing conceptual revolution in the theory of the firm, a theory which appears more relevant than ever in today’s economic climate. In this work, Stackelberg masterfully built a theoretical framework which he later developed in Market Structure and Equilibrium. Foundations of a Pure Cost Theory represents the first translation of the original German version into English. This substantial book offers readers a critical and technical understanding of the firm, how firms function and the environments in which they operate. Fundamental notions of cost production, market economy, optimum position and velocities of production are given prominence. Ultimately, this work, which remains largely unknown, can be seen as a milestone text in our understanding of the strategies adopted by firms as a whole. The book has been meticulously translated from the German into English, retaining the author’s examples in their historical context and capturing the spirit of the time with all its subtlety and significance.

Book Burning with Desire

  • Author : Geoffrey Batchen
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 1999-03-15
  • ISBN : 9780262522595
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Burning with Desire written by Geoffrey Batchen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-03-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an 1828 letter to his partner, Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre wrote, "I am burning with desire to see your experiments from nature." In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within the philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography as a medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussion of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He examines the output of the various nominees for "first photographer," then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The result is a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the medium's undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity.

Book A Brave New China The big Change

Download or read book A Brave New China The big Change written by Francesco Sisci and published by goWare. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Chinese look at themselves, the world, and the challenges of the future. Where is China, What is China: Where are the traditional pigtails of the old mandarins, the Mao’s bicycles and his suits? Where are the large families with the many concubines? The stuff that made China for centuries in all the stories Chinese and foreigners told of this huge country is gone. China now is skyscrapers, limousines, fast trains, science fiction airports, bright neon lights that explode in the night more than fireworks. Chinese are changing and have changed beyond recognition. In fact, they have changed so much that they do not see themselves in their present shape, just like an animal going through a metamorphosis. We are in the middle of this huge transformation and we don’t know if and when the new shape will stabilize and what impact it will have on the conscience of the Chinese and of the people of the world looking at China. This book is an exploration into this huge revolution that is affecting the whole planet in the biggest way possibly since the fall of the Roman Empire.
