Book excerpt: The meteoric rise of the photovoltaic (PV) industry is an incredible story. In 2013, Google’s investments in PV systems totaled about half a billion dollars and Warren Buffet, one of the famous investors, invested $2.5 billion in the world’s largest PV system in California. These gigantic investments by major financial players were made only 40 years after the first two terrestrial PV companies, Solarex and Solar Power Corporation, were formed in the USA. Back in 1973, the two companies employed 20 people and produced only 500 watts of PV power. Now, just 40 years later, over a million people work in the PV industry. The worldwide capacity of operating PV electric generators equals the capacity of about 25 nuclear power plants. The PV industry is growing at an annual rate of 30 percent, equivalent to about five new nuclear power plants per year. Today, solar electricity is a significant supplier of electricity needs, to the extent that PV is forcing the restructuring of 100-year-old electric power utilities. This book describes how this happened and what lies ahead for PV power generation.

Download or read book Solar Energy in Developing Countries written by A. Eggers-Lura and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar Energy in Developing Countries is a documentation report with bibliography on solar energy research and development in developing countries such as those in Asia, Central and South America, Africa, and Middle East. Institutions in developed countries with solar activities of interest to developing countries are included. This volume consists of seven chapters and opens with an overview of the study followed by a discussion on solar activities of relevance to developing countries, focusing on the work of international or supranational organizations such as the United Nations, NATO, and the European Economic Community. The following chapters deal with the state of the art of solar energy applications as well as solar R&D work in developing countries, including solar distillation, solar cooking and drying, and solar refrigeration and air conditioning. Information and addresses on sources of literature, hardware and equipment are also provided, along with a detailed and comprehensive bibliography (mostly with abstracts). This book is intended for solar scientists and engineers, government officials, and others who are interested in solar R&D work in developing countries.

Book Submerged and Floating Photovoltaic Systems

Download or read book Submerged and Floating Photovoltaic Systems written by Marco Rosa-Clot and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submerged and Floating Photovoltaic Systems: Modelling, Design and Case Studies investigates how the use of photovoltaic systems in and on the water can create a positive synergy by increasing the cost effectiveness of PV systems, satisfying the local energy demand and creating positive effects on water. Tina and Rosa-Clot combine their wealth of experience to present a theoretical, numerical, experimental and design-focused analysis of water-integrated PV systems. The book is dedicated to providing a very accessible and understandable analysis of the theoretical and modeling aspects of these PV systems. The authors explore and analyze many existing projects and case studies which provide the reader with an understanding of common design and installation problems, as well as a thorough economic study to help the reader justify the adoption of this very clean method of creating renewable energy. Investigates the installation of photovoltaic systems and storage systems over and under the water’s surface Offers theoretical and practical explanations of how to study, analyze and design photovoltaic energy systems which are complemented by MATLAB simulations for an enhanced learning experience Considers how the use of submerged and floating photovoltaic systems can work to fulfill domestic energy demand

Book The Pump House Gang

Download or read book The Pump House Gang written by Tom Wolfe and published by Picador. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sprawling collection of essays about the subcultures of the 1960s by Tom Wolfe, the revolutionary journalist and novelist When Tom Wolfe smashed his way into the literary scene in 1965 with The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, he transformed reporting in American popular culture. For his second book, Wolfe traveled from La Jolla to London in search of new lifestyles. The Pump House Gang is the result: a collection of essays that chronicles life at the end of the 1960s, written with all the panache and perceptiveness that made Wolfe one of our greatest American journalists. Running throughout The Pump House Gang is a central theme of Wolfe’s writing: status. He discusses the 1960s phenomenon of retreating from conventional social hierarchies, which Wolfe calls “starting your own league.” Surfers, motorcyclists, lumpen-dandies, and stay-at-homes—everybody’s doing it. Except for die-hards in the crumbling old social worlds of New York and London, where the confusion is so great that nobody can tell whether this is really the path to the top they’ve taken or just the service elevator. Dazzlingly brilliant as a stylist, daringly provocative as a commentator, and always entertaining, in The Pump House Gang, Wolfe is thoroughly, completely himself.
