Book A Proposed On Orbit Demonstration of an Advanced Pulsed Plasma Thruster for Small Satellite Applications

Download or read book A Proposed On Orbit Demonstration of an Advanced Pulsed Plasma Thruster for Small Satellite Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USAF Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Electric Propulsion Group is developing an Advanced pulsed-plasma thruster (PPT) technology demonstration for small satellites. The initial flight opportunity was on MightySat 11.2 - a satellite bus specifically designed to advance AFRL-developed technologies and serve as a risk reduction mission for systems required for TechSat 21. This experiment will demonstrate a high performance PPT, making it a viable thruster for various applications such as orbit raising and initiating and maintaining clusters of small satellites. The experiment will also be the first flight of a new micro-propulsion thruster - a miniaturized version of the PPT, known as the micro-PPT (%-PPT). The u-PPT is ideal for very precise attitude control and pointing, formation flying, and for primary propulsion on microsatellites. A novel on-board diagnostic package will be used to assess the contamination of optical and thermal control surfaces as a result of firing the PPTs. Ground-based observations will also be conducted to assess the on-orbit performance and possible communication impacts of the thruster firings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

Book Propulsion Technologies for Microsatellite Missions

Download or read book Propulsion Technologies for Microsatellite Missions written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many near, to mid-term satellite missions have been identified for 200 kg class spacecraft. For many of these applications, significant delta-v capability is desired in order to perform orbit transfer, on-orbit repositioning and formation flying. Several of these systems are in advanced engineering development and could be ready to support flight opportunities as early as summer 2004. A 200 W Hall Effect Thruster (RET) system is being developed to satisfy traditional high specific impulse (Isp) missions such as stationkeeping and orbit transfer, and has demonstrated Isp of 1,370 sec, thrust of 12.2 mN and 35% total efficiency. This system, however, has also demonstrated the ability to produce very small impulse bits, as low as 1.5 mN-sec, for formations flying applications that require precise maneuvers. To complement this system, a suite of miniaturized sensors is also in development that will enable a full description of the integration impacts of METs on Department of Defense (DoD), National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), and commercial satellites. This instrumentation package consists of a xenon ion energy analyzer, electron (Langmuir) probes, radiometric and photometric sensors, and a solar array experiment. The combined package, including the instruments, electronics, harness, chassis, etc., is less than 2 kg total mass - representing a significant improvement in capability vs. mass and cost. The third system in advanced development is a micro pulsed plasma thruster (MPPT) for applications in propulsive attitude control, which can reduce a l50-kg class microsatellite's attitude control system mass by 90%. This thruster, based on traditional pulsed plasma thrusters, weighs approximately 1.5 kg, and has three orthogonal thrust axes, each of which can be fired to produce impulse about any spacecraft axis. MPPT performance is now being optimized, but is expected to be from 25-100 microN, with an estimated Isp of 500-800 sec.

Book A Performance Comparison of Pulsed Plasma Thruster Electrode Configurations

Download or read book A Performance Comparison of Pulsed Plasma Thruster Electrode Configurations written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed plasma thrusters are currently planned on two small satellite missions and proposed for a third. In these missions, the pulsed plasma thruster's unique characteristics will be used variously to provide propulsive attitude control, orbit raising, translation, and precision positioning. Pulsed plasma thrusters are attractive for small satellite applications because they are essentially stand alone devices which eliminate the need for toxic and/or distributed propellant systems. Pulsed plasma thrusters also operate at low power and over a wide power range without loss of performance. As part of the technical development required for the noted missions, an experimental program to optimize performance with respect to electrode configuration was undertaken. One of the planned missions will use pulsed plasma thrusters for orbit raising requiring relatively high thrust and previously tested configurations did not provide this. Also, higher capacitor energies were tested than previously tried for this mission. Multiple configurations were tested and a final configuration was selected for flight hardware development. This paper describes the results of the electrode optimization in detail. Arrington, Lynn A. and Haag, Tom W. and Pencil, Eric J. and Meckel, Nicole J. Book Innovations in Pulsed Plasma Thrusters to Enable CubeSat Science Missions

Download or read book Innovations in Pulsed Plasma Thrusters to Enable CubeSat Science Missions written by Paige Northway and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CubeSats and other small satellites in the 3-25 kg range are increasingly able to conduct meaningful science through advances in technology and miniaturization. However, much of the proposed science requires satellite mobility, which has advanced more slowly due to constraints on CubeSat launches. Pulsed Plasma Thrusters (PPTs) are a potential means of propulsion for these satellites that do not require fluid or gas tanks and feeds and are relatively compact. This makes them an ideal candidate as a low risk propulsion system for secondary payloads capable of passing safety concerns related to launch. Previously, the specific thrust, or thrust output per power input (mN/kW) of PPTs developed for space flight was low for the desired propulsion applications. This work examines the development of a PPT specifically for CubeSat propulsion. It also investigates how several science questions could be answered with these advances, with examples of missions to the asteroid belt and Europa. It is shown that the power, geometry, and propellant are influential factors that can lead to substantial gains in thruster performance. Where Teflon[superscript]TM has been the propellant of choice for previously launched PPTs, the novel use of solid Sulfur propellant is demonstrated with a twofold increase in specific thrust, which is the highest of any material tested in this study. Furthermore, a switch from smooth to serrated coaxial electrodes provides an increase in the specific thrust by up to an additional factor of 2. These changes bring the current test system capabilities to 45 mN/kW with a specific impulse of 1200 sec. This provides the opportunity for CubeSat missions to execute orbital maneuvers with changes in velocity on a range from 50 to 500 m/s. A fully integrated flight model was built and tested to overcome issues arising from the transition from a benchtop system to a CubeSat formfactor and then further tested for launch and space environment compatibility. The miniaturized flight model achieves 25 mN/kW performance and is being tested on the University of Washington built HuskySat-1 3U+ CubeSat, which was launched Nov 2nd 2019 and deployed January 31st 2020.
