The importance of water to modern industrial processes, urban planning, and agricultural development is hard to overestimate. With these compelling motivations, it is natural that more tech nical and scientific study should have been devoted to this one substance than to any other. Research on water and its solutions has exhibited a marked expansion during the last decade. In sig nificant degree, this has resulted from the availability of new experimental tools and techniques, and of dramatic advances in computing science. This combination, in skilled hands, promises eventually to explain the unusual properties of water and aqueous solutions in unequivocal molecular terms. like wise, one now has reasonable hope that the active role that water plays in biochemical processes will be revealed and explained quantitatively at the molecular level. Owing to the widespread scholarly interest in aqueous science, it is clear that guides to the overwhelm ing literature on the subject are valuable. They serve ideally to indicate what is known and what is not, which areas harbor controversies, and what types of research attacks seem most fruitful (in answering more questions than they raise!). Whatever time and resources need to be spent in preparing compre hensive bibliographies should be quickly offset in the total scientific community by the efficiencies generated.

Book excerpt: Volume 63 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry provides an introduction for those not yet familiar with neutrons by describing basic features of neutrons and their interaction with matter as well illustrating important applications. The volume is divided into 17 Chapters. The first two chapters introduce properties of neutrons and neutron facilities, setting the stage for applications. Some applications rely on single crystals (Chapter 3) but mostly powders (Chapters 4-5) and bulk polycrystals (Chapters 15-16) are analyzed, at ambient conditions as well as low and high temperature and high pressure (Chapters 7-9). Characterization of magnetic structures remains a core application of neutron scattering (Chapter 6). The analysis of neutron data is not trivial and crystallographic methods have been modified to take account of the complexities, such as the Rietveld technique (Chapter 4) and the pair distribution function (Chapter 11). Information is not only obtained about solids but about liquids, melts and aqueous solutions as well (Chapters 11-13). In fact this field, approached with inelastic scattering (Chapter 10) and small angle scattering (Chapter 13) is opening unprecedented opportunities for earth sciences. Small angle scattering also contributes information about microstructures (Chapter 14). Neutron diffraction has become a favorite method to quantify residual stresses in deformed materials (Chapter 16) as well as preferred orientation patterns (Chapter 15). The volume concludes with a short introduction into neutron tomography and radiography that may well emerge as a principal application of neutron scattering in the future (Chapter 17).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first extensive pulsed neutron experiment in heavy water spanning the phase change from +40C to -50C in ice is described. Values for the diffusion coefficient (D sub 0) and the cooling coefficient C were calculated from measurements obtained over a range of buckling from .03 to .05 per square cm. Correlation with past measurements in water was very good. Support was obtained for sparse earlier indications of low values for the diffusion parameters below +50C and approaching the ice phase. These values are lower than would be predicted by straight line extrapolation from measurements at higher temperatures. There was insufficient evidence from which to conclude that a real discontinuity in (D sub o) exists at the phase change. It is considerably more likely that a discontinuity does exist in C, related to the high coherent scattering and crystalline type behavior of heavy water. (Author).
