Book The Fabrication of Heusler Alloy Thin Films from Multiphase Targets Using Pulsed Laser Deposition

Download or read book The Fabrication of Heusler Alloy Thin Films from Multiphase Targets Using Pulsed Laser Deposition written by Heather M. A. Patton and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project, the author explored the possibility of growing high quality Heusler alloy thin films from multiphase targets. Bulk targets were found to be partially formed, i.e. not of homogeneous L21 structure, through x-ray diffraction measurements. Pulsed laser deposition is a technique that can provide a congruent transfer of material from the target to the substrate, even in some cases where the target is not of a single crystalline phase. It was the objective of this work to determine whether L21 structured thin films of Co2MnAs[subscript x]Ge(1[subscript x]) could be grown from multiphase targets. Measurements have been carried out to study the magnetic and structural properties of the Heusler alloys Co2MnAs[subscript x]Ge(1−[subscript x]). The optimization parameters that were investigated were substrate type, growth temperature, laser parameters, film thickness, and other common deposition parameters. Temperature-dependent magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) techniques were used to study the qualitative magnetic properties. Alternating current (AC) susceptibility (using a MOKE technique) measurements were made as a function of temperature to view the second-order transition and obtain the Curie temperatures. Frequency dependent AC susceptibility was measured to determine the frequency dependence of the AC susceptibility for Co2MnAs[subscript x]Ge(1−[subscript x]).

Book Current Research in Pulsed Laser Deposition

Download or read book Current Research in Pulsed Laser Deposition written by Liviu Duta and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its limitation in terms of surface covered area, the PLD technique still gathers interest among researchers by offering endless possibilities for tuning thin film composition and enhancing their properties of interest due to: (i) the easiness of a stoichiometric transfer even for very complex target materials, (ii) high adherence of the deposited structures to the substrate, (iii) controlled degree of phase, crystallinity, and thickness of deposited coatings, (iv) versatility of the experimental set-up which allows for simultaneous ablation of multiple targets resulting in combinatorial maps or consecutive ablation of multiple targets producing multi-layered structures, and (v) adjustment of the number of laser pulses, resulting in either a spread of nanoparticles, islands of materials or a complete covering of a surface. Moreover, a variation of PLD, known as Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation, allows for deposition of organic materials, ranging from polymers to proteins and even living cells, otherwise difficult to transfer unaltered in the form of thin films by other techniques. Furthermore, the use of laser light as transfer agent ensures purity of films and pulse-to-pulse deposition allows for an unprecedented control of film thickness at the nm level. This Special Issue is a collection of state-of-the art research papers and reviews in which the topics of interest are devoted to thin film synthesis by PLD and MAPLE, for numerous research and industry field applications, such as bio-active coatings for medical implants and hard, protective coatings for cutting and drilling tools withstanding high friction and elevated temperatures, sensors, solar cells, lithography, magnetic devices, energy-storage and conversion devices, controlled drug delivery and in situ microstructuring for boosting of surface properties.

Book Epitaxial Growth of Metal Fluoride Thin Films by Pulsed laser Deposition

Download or read book Epitaxial Growth of Metal Fluoride Thin Films by Pulsed laser Deposition written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have studied growth of GdLiF4 thin films for optical waveguide applications. Epitaxial, c-axis oriented GdLiF4 films wer grown from undoped GdLiF4 targets in an on-axis Pulsed-laser deposition geometry on (100) CaF2. These films exhibit a high density of particulates on the surface which are ejected from the target in the ablation process. Growth from Nd-doped polycrystalline GdLiF4 ablation targets results in smooth films with lower particulate densities, as Nd doping increases the optical absorption of GdLiF4 at the ablation laser wavelength 193 nm and permits efficient pulsed-laser deposition. Optical emission spectra of the ablation pume reveals the presence of atomic F, Gd, and Li, indicating the dissociation of the metal-fluorine bonds in the ablation process. In addition, we find that the residual background oxygen pressure must be reduced to avoid formation of Gd4O3F6 as an impurity oxyfluoride phase in the films.

Book Growth of Semiconductor Thin Films by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Download or read book Growth of Semiconductor Thin Films by Pulsed Laser Deposition written by Yilu Li and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed ultraviolet light from a XeF excimer laser was used to grow thin films of zinc oxide and tin dioxide on (111) p-type silicon wafers within a versatile high vacuum laser deposition system. This pulsed laser deposition system was self-designed and self-built. Parameters such as pressure, target temperature, and distance from the target to the substrate can be adjusted in the system. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and ellipsometry were used to analyze the structures and properties of ZnO and SnO2 thin films. The critical temperature required to fabricate a crystalline ZnO thin film by pulsed laser deposition was found and has been confirmed. For the SnO2 thin film, the critical temperature required to generate a crystalline structure could not be found because of the temperature limit of the substrate heater used in the experiment. In SnO2 thin films, thermal annealing has been used to convert into crystalline structure with (110), (101) and (211) orientations. After fabricating the amorphous SnO2 thin films, they were put into an oven with specific temperatures to anneal them. The minimum annealing temperature range was found for converting the amorphous SnO2 thin films into SnO2 thin films with a crystalline structure. Thermal annealing has also been applied to some amorphous ZnO thin films which were fabricated under the critical temperature required to produce crystalline ZnO thin films. The minimum annealing temperature range for amorphous ZnO thin films was found and only one orientation (002) shown after annealing. Laser annealing technology has also been applied for converting both amorphous ZnO and SnO2 thin films, and results show that this method was not well suited for this attempt. ZnO thin films and SnO2 thin films with a crystalline structure have inportant widely used in industry, for example, application in devices such as solar cells and UV or blue-light-emitting devices. The aim of this research is to help improving the manufacturing process of ZnO and SnO2 thin films.
