Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Living Christ: The Vital Force in Pulpit and Pew What sort Of a being must Christ be in order to be a vital force in pulpit and pew to-day? To say he is the living Christ is hardly sufficient to satisfy the demands of a force, energizing here and now, unless we read into the word living something more than the bare fact Of continued existence. There is no doubt that the patri archs, apostles, saints and holy men of all ages, are living; for God is not the God Of the dead but Of the living; but they are not reckoned as a Vitalizing energy, pervading and transfiguring the lives Of men at the present hour. They have left behind them an influence which, more or less, affects the histdrical trend Of things; but it is an influence gauged and measured by what they were in character, while living in the world, hundreds and perhaps thousands of years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics and Etiquette of the Pulpit, Pew, Parish, Press and Platform: A Manual of Manners for Ministers and Members A preacher must be a gentleman. In the degree he falls below that does he stop short of meeting popular demand and is unsuccessful. Society will not tolerate, in a minister, cant, slang, pet phrases, and vulgar habits. He must be a man of clean hands, literally, as well as of a pure heart. Un spotted linen and a clean heart complement each other. Speech must be seasoned with salt. Book The Pulpit and American Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pulpit and American Life Classic Reprint written by Arthur S. Hoyt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and American Life Shortly before his death, the late Bishop Henry C. Potter of New York published a book on Eminent Churchmen he had known. Among the number thus treated were great English Churchmen like Dean Stanley of Westminster Abbey, Canon Liddon of St. Paul's, the present Bishop of London, Dr. Winnington-Ingram; and among Americans, Bishop Phillips Brooks, our greatest preacher and one of the noblest Americans. The literary critic of a New York daily, after praising the literary work of the book, added the depreciatory comment that it was a pity so much ability and labor were spent upon men whose work was" entirely aside from the main currents of human interests." Bishop Potter himself is sufficient answer to this common and superficial estimate of the preacher. He was not only pastor of churches in Troy, Boston, and New York, and finally Bishop of the most important diocese of his denomination, but by virtue of his character, position, and attainment was a force in the higher life of the city and nation. He was the first to point out the larger work of the Y. M. C. A. He was a pioneer in adapting the Church to its changed environment. He taught unflinchingly the social implications of Christian doctrine. He proclaimed the social duties of the new industrial order. He exposed the shame of a corrupt public life. He was a citizen Bishop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centenary Thoughts: For the Pew and Pulpit of Methodism in Eighteen Hundred and Eighty-Four The title of this book, while in itself somewhat blind, suffi ciently indicates to the Methodist fraternity its general char acter and intent. We have come to the closing hours of the first hundred years of our denominational history. Natur ally enough the occasion becomes one of special interest to Methodist peoples throughout the world. Crises points, epochal periods, inevitably start emotion and reflection. In the brief life of a man a year is significant, and the anni versary becomes a pivotal point. Great organic movements of society, civic or religious, which carry over ages, and along the lines of generations, fix their commemorative periods by centuries. Nature counts her epochal points by millenniads. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Last Words in the Pulpit Classic Reprint

Download or read book Last Words in the Pulpit Classic Reprint written by George C. Miln and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Words in the Pulpit I propose to glance at the past history Of that social in stitution known as the church, for the purpose of ascertain ing through what forms, and by what processes, it has reached its present condition; and also that we may with approximate precision forecast what its future will be. To accomplish this purpose with thoroughness - that is to enter into all the details of church history, to analyze closely and accurately the present status of the church, and then to picture with anything approaching to particu larity the future which lies before it - would be a task calling for the space Of many volumes, and requiring for its performance the learning of the historian, the passion Of the scientist, and the imagination of a prophet. Let me, then, disallow at once any such ambitious and weari some project. Instead of entering into all this infinite variety of detail, I would simply pass before you, with panoramic swiftness, the salient features which suggest themselves as one thinks of the past, the present, and the future of the church. My excuse for calling your thought to this theme, if any excuse is needed, is found in the fact that in the progress of thought upon so-called religious subjects, the divine institution of the church has been called in question, and its value as a constructive and formative instrumentality has been thrown into debate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and Platform: Being Discourses, Arguments and Orations Kind Reader: These essays, published at different times, in Europe and America, I have now collected together for your use and entertainment. I have few hopes of public applause, and certainly no dread of opposition. The discourse on Christian Union raised against me a storm as unlooked for as it was unmerciful. I was little aware while writing it, that in striking at the creed I was awaking a very demon of bigotry and intolerance. An extreme partiality of friends evinced itself by putting this discourse without my connivance, into the corner stone of the Meeting-house of the Second Baptist Church of Trenton, and the undying enmity of opposers, has since descended even to the mean work of digging up that corner stone for the purpose of taking away the obnoxious document. Spirit of intolerance, you may dig on!!! The spade, the axe, the faggot, and the rack are more congenial weapons to you than reason or revelation. Not with such instruments can the progress of free Bible enquiry by stopped. Almost every position taken in this volume was advocated amidst much opposition; but it is surely encouraging to find that public sentiment is steadily advancing in favor of light, liberty, and love. The main feature of this book is, doubtless, its relentless opposition to all despotism, political and religious. This indicates my true character, and without the tediousness of a biography, tells the tale of the sacrifices I have made, the opposition I have encountered, and my present religious position. The world, however, is moving on apace, and if I do not run too fast or die too soon, I may yet hope to be overtaken by public approbation. Meantime, kind reader, I hope you will profit by all the good you find in this book and throw the bad away.
