Filmmakers treated include Antonio Eguino, Jorge Sanjines, Jorge Ruiz, Marcos Loayza, Paolo Agazzi, and Oscar Soria. Book excerpt: Enamored with all things Western, fatherless Wesley grew up on working in the stockyards on the prairie cleaning corrals and feeding cattle, dreaming about leaving home for adventure. Hanging onto the details of stories of a few men from the West who passed through his young life momentarily, he learns that, to live there, the first thing one must do is become strong and acquire a gun and a horse. He’s also warned to be wary of dangerous outlaws. After buying a pistol off of a down-on-his-luck cowboy traveling through town, young Wesley learns to shoot. The cowboy invites him to look him up if he ever makes it out to New Mexico, where he’s widely known. Four years later his mom’s latest beau gets transferred to Denver, and Wesley joins them eagerly at the opportunity to see the West. Soon enough he saddles up a horse and tracks down his friend Bobby McGee, the mysterious cowboy who sold him a pistol as a thirteen-year-old boy in New Mexico. After their meet-up, Wesley gets the thrill of his life as he journeys alongside Bobby through northern New Mexico chasing down a gang of ruthless bandits who stole Bobby’s cattle and murdered his friends. Along the way he meets a pretty, half-Sioux girl, and travels with her and her father, Jeremiah, to the dangerous, heavily guarded Black Hills of South Dakota in Sioux country to mine for gold. After finding love and great fortune, Wesley eventually seems to settle right into his new life. Seemingly a nobody who came from nowhere, Wesley finds his place, home, and family far away in the West. But with friends like Bobby McGee around, you never can tell what adventure you may find yourself in next. Bobby is counting on Wesley’s sharp shooting and steady nerves to help him in a standoff with a presumptuous Texan who’s hell bent on taking every rancher’s land in the Red River Valley for himself.

Book Behind Spanish American Footlights

Download or read book Behind Spanish American Footlights written by Willis Knapp Jones and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across a five-hundred-year sweep of history, Willis Knapp Jones surveys the native drama and the Spanish influence upon it in nineteen South American countries, and traces the development of their national theatres to the 1960s. This volume, filled with a fascinating array of information, sparkles with wit while giving the reader a fact-filled course in the history of Spanish American drama that he can get nowhere else. This is the first book in English ever to consider the theatre of all the Spanish American countries. Even in Spanish, the pioneer study that covers the whole field was also written by Jones. Jones sees the history of a nation in the history of its drama. Pre-Columbian Indians, conquistadores, missionary priests, viceroys, dictators, and national heroes form a background of true drama for the main characters here—those who wrote and produced and acted in the make-believe drama of the times. The theatre mirrors the whole life of the community, Jones believes, and thus he offers information about geography, military events, and economics, and follows the politics of state and church through dramatists’ offerings. Examining the plays of a people down the centuries, he shows how the many cultural elements of both Old and New Worlds have been blended into the distinct national characteristics of each of the Spanish American countries. He does full justice to the subject he loves. A lively storyteller, he adds tidbits of spice and laughter, long-buried vignettes of history, tales of politics and drama, stories of high and low life, plots of plays, bits of verse, accounts of dalliance and of hard work, and sad and happy endings of rulers and peons, dramatists, actors, and clowns. A valuable appendix is a selected reading guide, listing the outstanding works of important Spanish American dramatists. A generous bibliography is a useful addition for scholars.

Book Looking Within

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nancy Morejón
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780814330388
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Looking Within written by Nancy Morejón and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Cuban poet Nancy Morej'n set out at a young age to explore the beauty and complexities of the life around and within her. Themes of social and political concern, loyalty, friendship and family, African identity, women's experiences, and hope for Cuba's future all found their way into her poems through bold metaphor and tender lyricism. This panoramic anthology, selected from ten volumes of Morej'n's work and organized by theme, contains some poems that have already been acclaimed in several languages, others that are less known, and some never before published. Overall they present to Morej'n's readership an enhanced, broader, and updated spectrum of her poetry in a Spanish-English edition. Although Morej'n does not sympathize as much with intellectualized feminism as with "street" feminism (the kind that erupts with force as it confronts daily life), her poems illuminate issues in women's existence. Without intending to, she has revitalized contemporary Caribbean feminist literary discourse. One can find in her work the tensions between colonizer and colonized, dominator and dominated, and at the same time enjoy the sheer beauty of images depicting suffering, strength, and hope.
